Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Eine Hyperchelesterinaemia wurde durch experimentelle Cholestase und Aminonucleosid-Nephrose an Ratten hervorgerufen.
Notes: Summary Hypercholesterolemia was induced in rats by experimental cholestasis and aminonucleoside nephrosis. After ascorbic acid administration the hypercholesterolemia was significantly decreased in both cases. In the case of cholestasis serum cholesterol was normal and in the case of nephrosis serum cholesterol remained above normal.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In 6 patients with regular intermittent hemodialysis treatment, some patients were undergoing longtime anticoagulants (marcumar), researches about reduction of heparin during heodialysis treatment werde done in course of 44 extracorporeal hemodialysis. By quantitative determinations of heparin in blood, checking blood clotting time and checking thromboplastine time a diminution of heparin rate pro dialysis were done depending on the degree of marcumareffect. The heparin reduction was 8000–12000 I.U. during a 14 hours dialysis by thromboplastin times of 12–30%.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Coagulated Scribner shunts are very suitable for experimental studies on fibrinolysis. The proteolytic activity of Protease I, also described as Aspergillin 0 and CA 7, and derived from Aspergillus oryzae, has been studied in coagulated Scribner shunts. It has been shown that Protease I locally applied is able to dissolve arterial and venous thrombi in vivo. Compared with other fibrinolytic substances only small doses of Protease I (10–12 mg) and short periods of application (30–40 min) were necessary for shunt declottings. Determinations of the individual inhibitor levels before and after administration of Protease I showed, that the small doses of Protease I used locally in coagulated Scribner shunts did not cause change in the inhibitor levels. Therefore side effects of a systemic fibrinolytic therapy could be avoided. There were only local side effects consisting in transient pains along the cannulated vessels.

Notes: Summary Cephalothin inhibits the activities of platelet enzymes, succinic dehydrogenase and NADH-cytochrome-c-reductase in patients with chronic renal failure. Two hours after Cephalothin administration the return of enzyme activities to baseline values was dependent on the severity of the chronic renal failure, and the higher the serum-creatinine concentration, the slower was the return to original enzyme activities.

Notes: Summary Patients undergoing maintenance haemodialysis exhibited at a regular level of ascorbic acid in plasma a decreased concentration of ascorbic acid in leukocytes. Therefore, the ascorbic acid should be administered in a high dosage to patients undergoing chronic haemodialysis, in order to prevent a vitamin-C deficiency in leukocytes.

Notes: Summary Clinical observations have shown, that administration of Co-trimoxazole (Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole) may result in an elevation of the serum-creatinine level. In 27 subjects the endogenous creatinine- and inulinclearance were measured before and during oral or parenteral application of Co-trimoxazole. The inulinclearance showed no significant differences (p〉0,05). But the endogenous creatinine clearance showed a reduction of 18% during the oral and of 13% during the parenteral treatment (p≦0,05) These observations indicate a functional inhibition of the tubular creatinine secretion by Co-trimoxazole.

Notes: Summary In patients undergoing maintenance haemodialysis in dependence of creatinine-concentration in plasma an inhibition of the enzymes succinic dehydrogenase and NADH-cytochrom-c-reductase in platelets was observed. The inhibition of enzymes was increasing after the administrastration of heparin.

Notes: Abstract Erection difficulties have a profound effect on a man's quality of life, however, the emotional consequences are often overlooked in quantitative research where most sex-related questionnaires focus on a man's functional ability. Consequently, we developed a cross-cultural instrument to measure quality of life specific to male erection difficulties (QOL-MED). The items in the QOL-MED originated from interviewing forty men with erection difficulties in Seattle and Boston. Twelve men in the USA and 29 men in England helped us refine the instrument. Testing the QOL-MED's psychometric properties involved two administrations over a two-week period in the USA (n=40) and the UK (n=29). For discriminant validity, we predicted quality of life would worsen with increased self-perceived severity of the condition. After controlling for years with erection difficulties in a linear regression model, we found a significant negative association between self-perceived severity and quality of life for men in the UK only (p〈0.01). The expectation that the measure would produce evidence for convergent validity by being more closely correlated to well-being than functional status was not confirmed. Both the USA and UK instruments were internally consistent (Cronbach's α=0.94 and 0.96, respectively), and reproducible (0.78 and 0.95, respectively). This instrument provides a promising tool for studying therapies and understanding quality of life in patients with erectile dysfunction.
