Notes: Summary In anaesthetized rabbits, the vestibulo-ocular reflex was evoked by electric stimulation of VIIIth nerve and was observed by recording postsynaptic potentials and relevant field potentials in Illrd nucleus. The electric stimulation of flocculus produced a prominent inhibition of the vestibulo-ocular reflex in both the inhibitory component relayed by the superior vestibular nucleus and the excitatory component mediated by the brachium conjunctivum. The excitatory component mediated by the medial vestibular nucleus appeared to be free of the flocculus inhibition. The flocculus inhibition was blocked very effectively by systemic injection of picrotoxin. That the flocculus inhibitory action is due to monosynaptic postsynaptic inhibition of secondary vestibular neurones was demonstrated by direct stimulation of, and also by recording from, the superior nucleus. Recording from the superior nucleus was also performed in anaesthetized cats. All of these above results indicate that Purkinje cells in flocculus projecting to vestibular and cerebellar nuclei cells have inhibitory synaptic action. Flocculus stimulation produced also an excitatory effect upon vestibular nuclei neurones. However, this effect could be attributed to intracerebellar activation of the primary vestibular fibers which pass into the flocculus.

Notes: A monospecific and high liter polyclonal antibody, designated as Fas D, raised against synthetic polypeptides selected from a part of the human Fas antigen (aa 104-514), was used to identify the Fas antigen in human oral epithelia in normal and pathological states. The human gingival proteins had been extracted and analysed by an ABC (avidin-biotin complex) immunoblotting technique. The antibody interacted with a single band in gingival proteins with an estimated molecular weight of 35, 000, which is in good agreement with that calculated from amino acid sequences of the human Fas antigen. Using an indirect immunohistochemical method, the antibody localized an the stratum spinosum and the basal part of the stratum corneum of normal human gingiva. Specimens obtained from patients with odontogenic keratocysts, leukoplakia, lichen planus, and squamous cell carcinoma were also stained with the antibody. The pattern of the Fas antigen distribution in oral stratified squamous epithelia was, with some overlapping, characteristic for each disease.

Notes: Abstract A very rare case of homologous carcinosarcoma of the endometrium associated with long-term tamoxifen treatment for breast cancer is reported. A 70-year-old Japanese woman was admitted with atypical genital bleeding. Six years earlier, she had undergone total right mastectomy for breast cancer, and administration of tamoxifen had been started postoperatively. On admission, biopsy revealed a homologous carcinosarcoma of the endometrium with metastasis in the endocervix. The patient underwent a Wertheim's hysterectomy that revealed stage IIIc disease with pelvic lymph node metastasis. She received six courses of adjuvant chemotherapy. Histological examination showed a homologous carcinosarcoma, composed of poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma and anaplastic sarcoma. No heterologous elements; for example, malignant cartilage or rhabdomyoblasts, were seen. Tamoxifen is a possible etiologic factor in the development of endometrial carcinosarcomas.

Notes: Abstract: The free energy of semiflexible polymers is calculated as a functional of the compositional scalar order parameter and the orientational order parameter of second-rank tensor Sij on the basis of a microscopic model of wormlike chains with variable segment lengths. We use a density functional theory and a gradient expansion to evaluate the entropic part of the free energy, which is given in a power series of .The interaction term of the free energy is derived with a random phase approximation. For the rigid rod limit, the nematic-isotropic transition point is given by , N and w being the degree of polymerization and the anisotropic interaction parameter, respectively, and the degree of ordering at the transition point is 0.33448. We also find that the contour length of polymer chains becomes larger in a nematic phase than in an isotropic phase. Interface profiles are obtained numerically for some typical cases. In the neighborhood of isotropic-isotropic interfaces, polymer chains tend to align parallel to the interface on the polymer-rich side and perpendicular on the poor side. When an isotropic region and a nematic region coexist, orientational order parallel to the interface is preferred in the nematic region.

Notes: Abstract: We investigate kinetics of nematic-isotropic transition by solving the hydrodynamic equations for the nematic tensor order parameter and the fluid velocity in two space dimension (x-y plane). Numerical results indicate that nematic directors tend to align parallel to the x-y plane when hydrodynamic flow is incorporated. Late stage growth exponents, for the correlation length and for the number of topological defects, are not significantly altered by hydrodynamic flow. However, in contrast to the case without flow, the relation holds well, which may indicate the validity of dynamical scaling for the case with hydrodynamic flow.
