Notes: Rapid solidification by twin-roller quenching of iron-neodymium-boron alloys produces flakes which show a strong (00l) texture normal to their surface by x-ray diffraction. The strong crystal orientation is argued to be due to both directional solidification in a thermal gradient and uniaxial deformation of the solid phase in the twin rollers. Magnetization studies on individual flakes show intrinsic coercivities of 14 kOe and a nearly 50% higher remanance for field normal to the flake surface (Br =9.5 kG) than in the flake plane (Br =6.5 kG). The perpendicular (BH)max is 16 MG Oe.

Notes: [Auszug] InSb resembles Sn in some crystal-chemical respects: identical tetrahedral bonding in 〈x-Sn (-44) and InSb (.83); existence of a metallic high-pressure modification of InSb with the p-Sn structure5; and identical position in the periodic table. This made it likely that a metallic phase of the ...

Notes: A new rapid solidification processing technique, liquid dynamic compaction (LDC), has been used to make bulk permanent magnets of composition Fe57 Co20 Nd15 B8. In this process, molten metal is spray atomized onto a cooled substrate in a protective atmosphere. Oxidation is minimal. Subsequent heat treatment at 450 °C of the LDC'd material has resulted in isotropic permanent magnets with intrinsic coercivity and remanance approaching 8000 Oe and 6000 G, respectively.

Notes: A metallic glass, Fe43Cr25Ni20B12, which is paramagnetic at room temperature, becomes ferromagnetic under annealing near the crystallization temperature, then loses its magnetization with further annealing. This unique behavior is closely related to the precipitation of a very fine metastable body-centered-cubic phase in a nonmagnetic matrix. Since the magnetism of the annealed samples arises from very small magnetic particles, superparamagnetic behavior is observed. From the characteristic magnetization curves of superparamagnetism, the average moment and the density of the magnetic particles were estimated and found to be in good agreement with observations made by transmission electron microscopy. The tentative analyses for the sample annealed at 666 K indicate that both nucleation and growth take place in the early stage (3.5–20 h) and that nucleation ceases in the later stage (20–145 h) of the crystallization process.

Notes: Co84Nb10B6 metallic glasses have been devitrified so as to produce a series of specimens with increasingly coarser microstructure. Samples annealed for 1 h at Ta≤700 °C remain largely glassy with a distribution of fine cobalt precipitates. Their coercivities increase with mean precipitate diameter. Samples annealed for 1 h at Ta≥700 °C are fully crystallized (fcc Co plus a Co-Nb boride). Their coercivities decrease with increasing mean grain size. An abrupt increase in coercivity occurs between Ta=650 and 700 °C.

Notes: The internal conductance from intercellular spaces to the sites of carboxylation (gi) has only been measured in a few tree species and not in conifers, despite the fact it may impose a large limitation on photosynthesis. The present study provides the first estimates of gi for a coniferous species, and examines variation in gi with height and its relationships to anatomical, biochemical and physiological traits. Measurements were made on upper and lower canopy current-year needles of 50-year-old Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco). Needle thickness and specific leaf area decreased by 30% from the top to bottom of the canopy. These anatomical/morphological changes were accompanied by modest variation in allocation of N to chlorophyll and the chlorophyll a/b ratio. Allocation of N to Rubisco did not vary with height, but the ratio of Rubisco to chlorophyll did owing to the aforementioned changes in allocation to chlorophyll. The value of gi was estimated in one tree from concurrent measurements of carbon isotope discrimination and net photosynthesis. To examine the variation in gi among trees a second independent method based on day respiration and the difference between the chloroplastic and intercellular photocompensation points (photocompensation point method) was used. Estimates of gi obtained by the two methods agreed well with values varying between 0.14 and 0.20 mol m−2 s−1. It is estimated that gi limits photosynthesis by approximately 20% as compared to an approximately 30% stomatal limitation (under well-watered conditions). The value of gi scaled approximately with maximum rates of photosynthesis, which were significantly greater in upper canopy needles. Nevertheless, gi did not vary significantly with canopy height, owing to greater variability in gi than photosynthesis.

Notes: Background: Noninvasive surrogate markers provide valuable information on the asthmatic inflammatory process. We wished to examine the effects of low dose fluticasone/salmeterol combination on different commonly used inflammatory markers in moderate persistent asthma. Methods: Twenty-five moderate persistent atopic asthmatics were enrolled of whom 20 completed an open label study. Following an initial 4 week steroid washout period in which patients took salmeterol 50 μg dry powder inhaler 1 puff BD, they received the addition of fluticasone as fluticasone 100 μg/salmeterol 50 μg combination dry powder inhaler 1 puff BD for the next 2 weeks. Exhaled nitric oxide, spirometry, methacholine PD20, sputum/blood eosinophils and sputum/serum eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) were measured following the salmeterol only and fluticasone/salmeterol combination treatment periods. Results: Compared to salmeterol alone (i.e. after the steroid washout), the use of fluticasone/salmeterol combination conferred significant improvements (P 〈 0.05) in all surrogate markers of inflammation apart from serum ECP. Geometric mean fold changes were 4.3-fold/1.3-fold for sputum/blood eosinophils, 2.2-fold/1.2-fold for sputum/serum ECP, 2.3-fold for methacholine PD20 and 1.8-fold for exhaled nitric oxide. Conclusions: Surrogate markers apart from serum ECP may be used as a guide to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of low dose inhaled corticosteroids. Sputum markers tend to be more sensitive than blood when assessing the anti-inflammatory response.

Notes: While Ga and Al do not form extended solid solutions in equilibrium, metastable single phase Ga–Al alloys were prepared by rapid quenching from the melt to −1190°C (splat cooling), yielding a wide extension of the Al-rich solid solution α; at higher Ga contents, this phase is followed by a tetragonal phase α′. Another metastable phase rich in Ga was also observed. The mean atomic volumes of α and α′ permit a quadratic extrapolation to pure Ga, for which V(Ga) = 18.27 Å3 at −190°C. The solid solution formation and the structural instability of the cubic and tetragonal phases α and α′ are discussed in terms of pseudopotential theory; the analogy of α′ to a high-pressure phase of Ga has been noted.
