    Notes: A procedure for fabricating all refractory superconducting tunnel junctions with a semiconducting barrier has been developed. The process is based on the deposition of a four-layer Nb–Al–CdS–Nb structure without breaking the vacuum. The photoconducting properties of the barrier produce a light-sensitive behavior of the junctions. Preliminary measurements have shown the occurrence of light induced quasiparticle tunneling. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present the characterization of a fully integrated Josephson device consisting of a rf-superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) coupled to a readout system based on a dc SQUID sensor. Particular care in the design is devoted to minimize the electromagnetic noise coming from the environment. We report data on dc SQUID performances as well as on the decay rate from metastable flux states of the rf SQUID in the classical regime. The low dissipation level and the good insulation of the probe from the external noise are encouraging in view of macroscopic quantum experiments. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Fully integrated low-critical-temperature magnetometers based on asymmetric superconducting quantum interference devices have been designed, fabricated, and characterized. The large value of the flux to voltage transfer coefficient, typical of such configurations, allow a direct coupling to an external preamplifier without the need of an impedance matching flux transformer or additional positive feedback circuitry. This simplifies the read-out electronics, as required in multichannel systems for low-noise measurements. The values of the magnetic flux noise and field sensitivity, obtained so far, are 3–5 μΦ0/Hz1/2 and 6–7 fT/Hz1/2, respectively. These results are already suitable for biomagnetic applications and can be further improved by properly optimizing the device parameters. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present Nb/AlOx/Nb–Al/AlOx/Nb stacked Josephson junctions which we propose as three-terminal elements to control the quantum behavior of Josephson complex systems. A bias current can be independently injected in the "top" junction, providing a fine control of the critical current of the "bottom" junction. The reported characterization of the device refers to data in the classical limit including measurements of the switching dynamics between metastable states of the system at different temperatures and bias conditions. At low temperature, the effective dissipation of the bottom junction remains substantially unchanged when different injection currents flow in the top junction. These results are interesting to project new configurations of macroscopic quantum experiments. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present a design of extremely underdamped Josephson junctions either for use in experiments in the quantum limit or for devices using the switching dynamics of the junction, when a low noise level is mandatory. High resistance molybdenum meander lines integrated with the junction allow one to increase the insulation of the sample from its electromagnetic environment. We report an experimental study of the effective dissipation relevant in the thermally activated supercurrent decay presenting evidence of a substantial reduction of the dissipation level at low temperature. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The authors report a rate case of carcinoid syndrome (CS) in a 12-year-old child that was caused by a carcinoid tumor located in the ileum that had metastasized mainly to the liver. After resection of the primary tumor, treatment with octreotide and polychemotherapy (five monthly cycles of 5-flourouracil, epidoxorubicin, and deticene) was ineffective for both reducing the metastatic liver disease and controlling the clinical symptoms. The patient's poor prognosis led the authors to perform a liver transplantation. The results of liver transplantation in patients with metastatic liver disease are generally not good. However, neuroendocrine tumors seem to be an exception due to their slow growth. At present, the child is in complete clinical and laboratory remission 4 months after transplantation. To the best of our knowledge, only 5 cases of CS have been reported to date in children.

    Notes: Abstract An evaluation of all pediatric patients with primary or secondary pulmonary disease operated upon from January 1993 to July 1996 by the same senior surgeon was carried out. The inclusion criterion was a lung resection in patients aged less than 14 years. Children were divided into two categories according to the neoplastic or non-neoplastic nature of their disease. In the first group a lobectomy was performed for primary lesions and wedge resection for secondary ones. In the second group lobar emphysema and cystic dysplasia were the major indications for lobectomy, while diagnostic wedge resections were performed for interstitial/infiltrative lesions. Several groups of techniques were identified according to the type of approach and the suture method. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery and a muscle-sparing approach were compared to classic posterolateral thoracotomy. The mechanical stapler-suturing method was compared to the manual suturing. Our results demonstrate the importance of mechanical suturing, particularly in decreasing anesthesia time and reducing the risk of dehiscence. The minimally invasive approach associated with mini-thoracotomy was particularly useful for patients with reduced oxygen saturation due to ventilatory and gas-exchange problems. The roles of staplers in lung parenchymal resection and minimally invasive procedures for improving the postoperative thoracic compliance of pediatric patients are stressed.

    Notes: Abstract Wilms' tumor (WT) usually has a good outcome, although a poor prognosis is often related to more advanced stages and anaplastic features. Apoptosis occurs with variable frequency in malignant tumors, and may have a role in reducing their growth rate. The bcl-2 proto-oncogene inhibits apoptosis, and the consequent increase in the number of cells may play a role in the development of tumors. The aim of this study was to analyze the role of apoptosis and bcl-2 expression in WT. Twenty-six resected WT specimens were studied; 12 patients had stage I tumor, 4 stage II, 5 stage III, 3 stage IV, and 2 stage V. Twenty-three tumors were classified as favorable histology (FH) and 3 as unfavorable (UH). The mean follow-up was 34 months; 22 patients were alive and 4 were dead (2 with FH: 1 stage III and 1 stage IV, and 2 with UH stages 4). Apoptosis was detected by the in-situ end-labelling technique; bcl-2 expression was detected by immunohistochemistry. An apoptotic index (AI) was calculated as the ratio of apoptotic to normal cells in each specimen. The AI was lower in higher tumor stages, with a significant difference between stages I and IV (P 〈 0.05). In cases with UH, Al was lower than in tumors with FH (P 〈 0.01). The AI was also lower in patients who died than in those who survived (P 〈 0.01). In all specimens no correlation between AI and bcl-2 expression was observed. Progression to advanced stages of WT and a poor prognosis f anaplastic tumors may be linked with disruption of the mechanisms that control apoptosis. Bcl-2 does not play a role as a regulator of apoptosis in WT, other oncogenes and tumor-suppression genes may be more involved in inhibiting apoptosis in WT.
