Zusammenfassung Anhand von Gewebsproben aus den Placentonen reifer menschlicher Placenten wird die ultrastrukturelle Lokalisation der alkalischen Phosphatase (a.P.) untersucht. Dabei können die lichtoptisch gefundenen Ergebnisse [7] über die unterschiedliche Aktivität der a.P. in Zotten aus der zentralen und peripheren Region der Placentone bestätigt werden. Es zeigt sich, daß die a.P. in den zentral gelegenen Zotten ganz überwiegend in der Membran der apikalen Mikrovilli lokalisiert ist. Die peripher gelegenen Zotten, bei denen lichtoptisch neben der apikal gelegenen Aktivität auch basal im Syncytium Enzymaktivität nachgewiesen wurde, zeigen ultrahistochemisch a.P.-Aktivität auch in mikrovillösen Abfaltungen des basalen Plasmalemm, welches der Basalmembran unmittelbar aufsitzt. Die Bedeutung dieser membranbezogenen Enzymaktivität für den Durchtritt von Stoffen wird besprochen.

Summary The ultrastructural localization of alcaline phosphatase (a.p.) is studied in placental villi from central and peripheral areas of human term-placental placentons. Our earlier light-microscopical results [7] concerning the different activity of a.p. in the two areas are confirmed. It is demonstrated by ultrahistochemical methods, that villi of the central region show activity of a.p. mainly in the membrane of superficial microvilli. Villi, situated in the periphery, showing besides apical syncytial a.p. activity alsobasal enzyme activity in light microscopical studies, are demonstrated to possess a.p.-activity also in the membrane ofbasal syncytial microvilli. The meaning of this membrane-situated activity of a.p. for the transport of substrates is discussed.
