    Notes: Abstract Aims/hypothesis. We have recently shown that hyperglycaemia down-regulates the GLUT1 glucose transport system of term placental trophoblast. The reduction in GLUT1 protein alone was, however, not sufficient to explain the decrease in net glucose uptake, suggesting additional mechanisms. Therefore, we hypothesised that hyperglycaemia in vitro leads to a GLUT1 translocation from the trophoblast surface to intracellular sites.¶Methods. This was tested in our study by determining the subcellular distribution of GLUT1 in human term placental trophoblast (n = 5 placentas) cultured for 48 h with 5 compared with 25 mmol/l d-glucose in vitro using immunogold labelling.¶Results. Electron microscopic examination of cell profiles showed that 73 % of total GLUT1 molecules reside in the trophoblast plasma membrane under basal conditions. The reduced GLUT1 expression (–20 %; p 〈 0.05) after culture of the cells with 25 mmol/l glucose was accompanied by an internalisation of plasma membrane GLUT1, resulting in a loss of 40 % (p 〈 0.05) in cell surface transporter labelling. Western blotting identified a characteristically broad band between 55–65 kDa, confirming the specificity of the GLUT1 antiserum.¶Conclusion/interpretation. We postulate that in addition to down-regulating human GLUT1 protein concentrations, glucose exerts its autoregulatory effect on hexose transport in term placental trophoblast by altering GLUT1 partitioning between the plasma membrane and intracellular sites in favour of the latter.     Notes: Abstract  Hydrogeologic data of 455 water wells comprising geologic logs, water qualities, and aquifer test results are analyzed to determine hydrogeological characteristics, water quality, and sustainable yield of the groundwater resources of Cheju volcanic island. The groundwater of the island occurs in unconsolidated pyroclastic deposits and clinkers interbedded in highly jointed basaltic and andesitic rocks as high-level, basal, and parabasal groundwater under unconfined conditions. The total storage of groundwater is estimated at about 44 billion m3. The average transmissivity and specific yield of the aquifer are at about 0.34 m2 s–1(29300 m2 day–1) and 0.12, respectively. The average annual precipitation is about 3.39 billion m3, of which 1.49 billion m3– equivalent to 44.0% of the total annual precipitation – is recharged into aquifers, with 0.638 billion m3 year–1 of runoff and 1.26 billion m3 year–1 of evapotranspiration. Based on a groundwater budget analysis, the sustainable yield is estimated at about 0.62 billion m3 year–1, equivalent to 41.6% of annual recharge. A low-permeability marine sedimentary formation (Sehwari formation), composed of loosely cemented sandy silt, was recently found to be situated at 120±68 m below mean sea level. If the said marine sediment is distributed as a basal formation of the freshwater zone of the island, most of its groundwater will be of parabasal type. So the marine sediment is one of the most important hydrogeological boundaries and groundwater occurrences in the area.

    Notes: Summary The effect of cholestyramine on the absorption of phenprocoumon and acetylosalicylic acid has been studied in volunteers by comparing their serum concentrations after a single oral dose either of the drug alone or simultaneously with the resin in a crossover repetition arrangement. In four volunteers cholestyramine 8 g significantly reduced the absorption of a simultaneous 15 mg dose of phenprocoumon. The effect of the latter on coagulation, as measured by the thrombotest method was also diminished. The absorption of acetylosalicylic acid 500 mg was delayed by cholestyramine but there was no appreciable effect on the total amount absorbed. These results are in accordance with the stronger binding of phenprocoumon to cholestyramine inin vitro experiments.

    Notes: Passport for Windows (PFW) and OCLC Macro Language (OML) are a library software combination that is hard to beat in terms of power and flexibility. PFW provides a desktop where multiple telecommunications (usually telnet) sessions can exist simultaneously, and the OML permits programmatic control and automation of tasks in any individual session as well as data sharing between different sessions. The fact that an entire programming language is available to the OML macro writer is what gives PFW the ability to seemingly work "magic" literally at the touch of a key, especially through the use of conditional logic for automated decision-making. Not only is OML available in OCLC's PFW product, but slight variants are available in OCLC's Cataloging MicroEnhancer and ILL MicroEnhancer products as well. Although the pros of OML far outnumber the cons, there exist some downside issues (documentation, networkability, differences between products) which sometimes make macro writing and use by staff more difficult than it needs to be. In the end, though, all the efforts are worth it, because, by using PFW/OML macros, automation can do what it is good at, thereby giving staff the time and opportunity to do what they are good at.

    Notes: Abstract: Aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase catalyzes the biosynthesis of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin. This enzyme is also expressed in nonneuronal tissues. Two reported cDNA sequences show that the pheochromocytoma message differs from the liver message only at the 5’untranslated region. We present the complete exonal organization and promoter sequences of the rat gene encoding this enzyme. The rat aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase gene is composed of two promoters and 16 exons spanning more than 80 kb in the genome. The first exon carries the majority of the 5’untranslated sequence of the liver cDNA, and the second exon carries that of the pheochromocytoma cDNA. In the third exon, there are two alternatively utilized splicing acceptors specific to the first and second exons. Therefore, both alternative promoter usage and alternative splicing are operative for the differential expression of this gene. The sequence of each promoter region shows putative binding sites for octamer factors and AP-2.
