    Notes: Abstract —The paper presents results of experiments designed to measure the actual dynamic magnification of the Wiechert 1000 kg horizontal seismometer when excited by seismic waves. This is accomplished by comparing 51 digital records of seismic events recorded by the Wiechert and a well calibrated reference seismometer. The results obtained indicate that the magnification of the Wiechert seismometer is influenced by the interaction of its mass and frame, especially for high frequencies. This interaction has been modeled by considering a system of two coupled pendulums, yielding a theoretical dynamic magnification curve which exhibits main features of the observed magnification. The dis crepancy between the nominal and the actual response of the Wiechert seismograph may lead to errors in studies involving spectral analyses of recorded seismograms, and to overestimation of local earth quake magnitudes.

    Notes: Abstract —Some of the elements of regional seismic hazard in Croatia are assessed by computing synthetic accelerograms at a predetermined set of sites. The input dataset consists of structural models, parameters of seismic sources, and an updated earthquake catalog. Synthetic strong-motion time series for frequencies below 1 Hz are computed on a grid of sites using the modal summation technique. The long-period hazard is described by the distribution of estimated peak values of ground displacement, velocity and acceleration, while the short-period hazard is represented by the map of design ground acceleration values (DGA). The highest values of DGA exceeding 0.35 g on the base-rock level are found in the southeastern coastal part of the country, in the greater Dubrovnik area.

    Notes: Abstract —The paper presents the results of application of the CN algorithm to the area of the Southern External Dinarides. Two cases are considered—one for the knowledge gained throughout the considered period of time (1936–1996), and the other when learning ceased in 1986. In the first case 8 out of 9 strong earthquakes could have been predicted, three false alarms are declared (covering 7% of the total time considered) and TIPs occupy 32% of the total time. There is no clear relation between the TIPs duration and the size of the related earthquake. The second case (when the CN functions are defined on the basis of a shorter learning period) produces even slightly better results: only two false alarms are declared. In both cases current alarm exists in the region. All attempts to reduce the area of the regional polygon resulted in poorer prediction results.

    Notes: Abstract Monooctyl-α-(4-carboxyanilino)benzylphosphonic acid (H2L) was investigated as a novel reagent for the extraction and separation of lead(II) and bismuth(III) from nitrate solutions. Stoichiometric ionization constants of H2L in ethanol — water mixtures determined by potentiometric NaOH titration had values pKa1 2.25 and pKa2 4.33. Ethanol and chloroform solutions of H2L followed Beer's law at 300 nm and 296 nm, molar absorptivities being 2.94·104 mol−1·l·cm−1 and 2.85·104 mol−1·l·cm−1, respectively. HNO3 and HCl were also extracted into chloroform solutions containing H2L. Bismuth(III) was quantitatively transferred into the chloroform H2L solution at pH 1, and lead(II) at 3.5. The value of the separation factor DBi/DPb is 160 at pH 1.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird der Einfluß von ionogenen und nichtionogenen organischen Molekülen und anorganischen Ionen auf die Adsorbierbarkeit von Eu3+-Ionen an AgBr-Niederschlägen untersucht. EM-Aufnahmen zeigen, daß die Größenverteilung der AgBr-Partikel von der Konzentration der nichtionogenen organischen Moleküle in der wäßrigen Lösung stark abhängt. Bei großer Konzentration sind die AgBr-Partikel sehr klein, und die Adsorption ist sehr hoch. Das Adsorptionsgleichgewicht zwischen anorganischen und organischen Ionen wurde bestimmt. Die Ergebnisse weisen auf volle Desorption von Eu3+-Ionen aus den Niederschlägen bei einer ausreichend großen Konzentration der anorganischen und organischen Ionen hin.
    Notes: Summary The influence of the concentration of ionic and nonionic organic molecules and inorganic ions on the adsorbability of Eu3+ ions on the AgBr precipitates is described. It was found that the concentration of the inorganic as well as the concentration of organic molecules in the systems has a great influence on the adsorption of Eu3+ ions. Electromicrographs show that the dispersity of AgBr precipitates strongly depends on the concentration of the nonionic organic molecules present in the systems. At higher concentration of these molecules the particles of AgBr become very small and the adsorption of Eu3+ ions increases. Adsorption equilibrium between Eu3+ ions and organic and inorganic ions has been determined. Eu3+ ions can be desorbed from the precipitates if the concentration of organic and inorganic ions are high enough.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wurde die Wirkung von Natrium-n-Alkylsulfaten mit 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 und 16 C-Atome in der Alkylkette auf positiv sowie negativ geladene AgJ-Systeme untersucht. Dabei wurden die Koagulationskonzentrationen der erwähnten Alkylsulfate für positiv geladene AgJ-Systeme und die kritischen Konzentrationen derselben einen der Koagulation ähnlichen Prozeβ bei den negativ geladenen AgJ-Systemen bestimmt. In beiden Fällen wurde eine “in statu nascendi” Methode angewandt. Die Koagulationskonzentration sowie die kritischen Konzentrationen zeigen eine lineare Abhängigkeit von der C-Atomanzahl im betreffenden Natrium-n-Alkylsulfat.
    Notes: Summary The influence of sodium-n-alkyl sulphates with even number of C atoms (from 6 to 16) on the positively and negatively charged AgI systems was examined. The coagulation concentrations for each alkyl sulphate for positively charged AgI was determined. The critical concentrations of alkyl sulphates for a process similar to coagulation on negatively charged AgI systems were also determined. In both cases, the “in statu nascendi” method was employed. The coagulation concentrations and critical concentrations are in linear relationship with the number of C atoms of the sodium-n-alkyl sulphates.

    Notes: Summary Using radioactive152Eu the adsorption of the Eu3+ ions on the surface of the silver iodide precipitates in the presence of rhodamine 6 G, strychnine and triton-X-305 (T-X-305) was studied. The effect of the desorption on rhodamine 6 G and strychnine is determined. The obtained results show that a complete desorption of the Eu ions is obtained if the concentration of these compounds is ten times lower than that needed for inorganic ions of the same valency. The effect of T-X-305 is opposite to that of the above mentioned compounds. It is also determined that by increasing the concentration of T-X-305 the adsorption of the Eu ions is enhanced, this being connected with the change of the dispersity of the system. The electron micrographs show that the change of the dispersity of the AgI particles is caused by various concentrations of T-X-305. It has been found that the adsorbed amount of the Eu ions depends upon the way of preparation of the AgI systems.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Fällung und Mitfällung von Tantal und Niob aus Kaliumfluorid-lösungen wurde unter verschiedenen Versuchsbedingungen untersucht. Veränderungen der Flußsäurekonzentration beeinflussen die Fällungsausbeute an K2TaF7 zwar nicht, im Gegensatz dazu aber wird diese Ausbeute durch Veränderungen der Kaliumfluoridkonzentration beeinflußt. Die Niob-Mitfällung erfolgt hauptsächlich auf Grund der Adsorption an der Oberfläche der festen Phase. Die chemische Zusammensetzung des Kaliumtantalfluorids wurde durch Neutronenaktivierungsanalyse überprüft.
    Notes: Summary Precipitation and co-precipitation of tantalum and niobium from KF solution were investigated under various experimental conditions. Results obtained indicate that variations of HF concentration do not influence the K2TaF7 precipitation yield, but variations in KF concentration do. Niobium co-precipitation is mainly due to adsorption onto the surface of the solid phase. Chemical composition of the potassium tantalum fluoride was checked by neutron-activation analysis.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Trennung des radioaktiven90Y von Sr mit Monooktyl-anilinobenzyl-phosphonat wurde beschrieben. Y geht aus 0,1- bis 0,01-m Salzsäure quantitativ in die organische Phase über, während Sr in der wäßrigen Phase bleibt. Die Trennung läßt sich entweder aus verd. Yttriumlösung oder bei Vorliegen der trägerfreien Form durchführen. Die Sr-Menge hat keinen Einfluß. Der Trennungsfaktor beträgt 106. Die Reinheit des abgetrennten90Y wurde an Hand seiner Abklingkurve geprüft.
