Notes: Abstract The synthetic androgen 17β-trenbolone (β-TBOH), used as a growth promotant in cattle, and its metabolite 17α-trenbolone (α-TBOH) were tested for genetic toxicity in Syrian hamster embryo (SHE) cells and in mouse C3H10T1/2 embryo fibroblasts by measuring the induction of micronucleus formation and neoplastic cell transformation. Both β-TBOH and α-TBOH, but not testosterone nor its hormonally active metabolite, 5α-dihydrotestosterone, caused a dose-related induction of micronuclei in SHE cells. In C3H10T1/2 cells, neither β-TBOH nor α-TBOH gave rise to micronucleus induction. Further more, both β-TBOH and α-TBOH, but not testosterone, were found to transform SHE cells but not C3H10T1/2 cells morphologically. The β-TBOH-transformed SHE cells proved to be neoplastic in thymus-aplastic nude mice. These data show that β-TBOH is able to cause changes at the chromosomal level and neoplastic transformation independent of its hormonal activity in one mammalian cell system but not in another one. The implications of these data for the risk evaluation of β-TBOH are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary For special applications of programmed instruction such as operator training, the use of computer terminals, the application of program packages or the training for similar operating functions a language is given wich allows the formulation of instructional programs in a relatively simple way. The language was designed to enable effective compilation. A description of some details of the compiler is given together with some comments on the structure of the generated object code.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary By connecting the digital computer TR 4 to the analogue computer RA 770 a hybrid system became available at the Computer Center of the University of Stuttgart during the summer of 1970. This hybrid system is distinguished by the relatively large digital computer and the software available with it. Hybrid programs can be written either in assembler code or in an extention of ALGOL 60. The operating system of TR 4 has been extended such that within the normal batch processing hybrid programs can be run. In addition to the diagnostic system for hardware components and hybrid programs the functions of the hardware moduls are described.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary For programming the Hybrid System TR4 — RA770 at the Computer Center of the University of Stuttgart the programming language ALGOL 60 has been extended by a number of type declarations and code procedures. They enable to control the data transfers between the digital computer and the analogue computer. A description of some implemented facilities of the operating system is given. Also some of the most important code procedures are explained. By a procedure for setting servopotentiometers and a program it is shown how HYGOL can be used.

Notes: Summary Survival and G2 delay following exposure to either60Cobalt-γ-rays or241Americium-α-paticles were studied in eight mammalian cell lines of human and animal origin including human fibroblasts from normal individuals and from patients with Ataxia telangiectasia or Fanconi's anemia. For both endpoints the effectiveness of alpha particles was greater as compared toγ-rays. RBE values for G2 delay (4.6–9.2) were in general comparable to RBE values derived from initial slopes of survival curves (RBE α ) but higher compared to the ratio of mean inactivation doses $$\left( {RB_{\bar DML} } \right)$$ . Ataxia cells were particularly sensitive to cell killing byγ-irradiation (D37 = 0.57 Gy), however, showed average sensitivity toα-particles of high LET (D37 = 0.30 Gy). With the exception of Ataxia cells, cell killing and G2 delay seem to be related processes if individual cell cycle parameters are taken into account.

Notes: Abstract Irradiation of human lymphocytes by α-particles under different conditions has been seen to be substantially more effective in the induction of dicentric chromosomes than irradiation by γ-rays. However, the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) determined in these studies differed by a factor of more than 10. These variations in RBE are likely to be due in part to differing exposure conditions. Therefore, a technique designed to insure uniformity of irradiation was developed in the present study, and complications due to the cell cycle kinetics were controlled. After stimulation with phytohaemagglutinin (PHA), separated lymphocytes were allowed to attach for 3 h to the thin foil bottom of an irradiation chamber. Cell monolayers were exposed with α-particles from 241Am. Strong over-dispersion was noted for the cell-to-cell variance of the number of dicentrics. The dose response of dicentrics was linear, with a yield of 0.27 dicentrics per cell and per Gy. This corresponds to a low dose RBE of 15 relative to 137Cs γ-ray exposure under the same experimental conditions.
