    Notes: We present a new scanning force microscope (SFM) design with a compact fiber-optic interferometric detection system that provides very high resolution for surface force measurements. The mechanical conception of the instrument includes the implementation of piezoelectric actuators for the interferometer alignment. The result of this approach is a high performance SFM with both easy handling and high versatility.

    Notes: Abstract In recent years direct brazing of a monolayer of diamond crystals on a steel substrate with active filler metals has gained tremendous importance in the industry, with a view to developing tools which can out-perform the conventional galvanically bonded diamond tools. An existing proprietary process uses a specially prepared Ni-Cr filler metal to facilitate its application on a steel substrate. The brazing is done either in a vacuum or a dry hydrogen furnace. The present study has shown that a commercially available Ni-Cr hardfacing alloy, flame-sprayed on a steel substrate with an oxyacetylene gun, could be used for direct brazing of diamond particles. Induction brazing was carried out in an argon atmosphere only for short durations. During brazing under such conditions, the chromium present in the alloy segregated preferentially to the interface with diamond to form a chromium-rich reaction product promoting the wettability of the alloy. It has been further revealed that under a given set of brazing conditions, the wettability of the Ni-Cr hardfacing alloy towards diamond grits primarily depended on its layer thickness. Such dependence resulted in significant variation of topographical features of the tool and its wear mode in simulated grinding tests.

    Notes: Abstract An investigation has been carried out to gain information about the capabilities of some filler alloys for direct brazing of CBN (cubic boron nitride) grits to a steel substrate. It has been found that a Ni-Cr alloy, known for effective diamond brazing, failed to show satisfactory wetting and bonding characteristics towards CBN under the same brazing conditions as that of diamond. The situation could not be improved either by increasing the wt% of Cr or the brazing temperature. Also, prolongation of the brazing time did not show any significant change. It was further revealed that a Ag-Cu-Ti alloy, which is well established for the brazing of diamond and ceramics, exhibited good wetting and bonding towards CBN at moderate temperature. Based on the thermodynamic properties of various materials, characteristic properties of elements of group IV B to VI B and the physical observations made during the investigation, it is suggested that the transition elements of group IV B, such as Ti or Zr, are preferred to transition elements of group VI B, such as Cr, as an activator to promote the wetting characteristics of the braze alloy towards CBN, which is far more chemically stable than diamond.

    Notes: Abstract The local chemical properties of the contacting asperities in a real tribosystem are of crucial importance for the resulting macroscopic tribo-behavior. Thus, the lateral forces acting on the tip of a standalone scanning force and friction microscope have been investigated as a function of controlled surface chemistry, realized by potentiostatic control of the sample. The results obtained show a clear dependence of nanoscale friction behavior upon changes in the electrochemical state of the system.

    Notes: Thioharnstoff-Zusätze zu sauren Verkupferungsbädern verbessern die mechanischen Eigenschaften der abgeschiedenen Schichten. Der Thioharnstoff kann in Form seines Cu(I)-Komplexes spektrophotometrisch im UV-Bereich bestimmt werden. Dieser Komplex verschwindet bei der Elektrolyse schneller aus dem Anoden- als aus dem Kathodenraum. Elektronenmikroskopisch ließ sich zeigen, daß bei zwei nacheinander mit dem gleichen Bad erhaltenen Schichten die mittlere Korngröße zunimmt, während Verteilungsdichte und mittlerer Durchmesser der Einschlüsse sich kaum verändern. Die Zunahme der Korngröße im Verlauf der Elektrolyse wurde auch innerhalb einer einzigen Schicht nachgewiesen.

In the test series the best tribological behaviour is found if both sliding partners are coated with a surface layer of titanium carbide formed by chemical vapour deposition (CVD).

    Notes: Summary Functional coating and surface modified layers can be characterized by engineering related criteria such as the ultramicrohardness test and the scratch adhesion test. The ultramicrohardness test is based on penetration depth measurements during a loading and unloading cycle. The depth sensing indentation provides a means of evaluating the elastic and plastic deformations of the tested material, from which, by calculation, the microhardness, HV, and the elasticity modulus, E, can be derived as illustrated on a number of examples of hard and soft materials and coating composites. The scratch test (REVETESTR) and microscratch test (MSTR) has been applied to determine the adhesive and/or cohesive strength of coatings deposited on softer or tougher substrates. A Rockwell C diamond cone is used to scratch the surface of the coated or surface-modified specimen at a constant speed and under a continuously increasing load. The smallest load at which the coating is damaged, called the Critical Load, Lc, is determined by optical, electron optical, acoustic emission detection and/or by frictional force measurement, i.e. by the sudden increase of the driving force. This is illustrated on hard, brittle, and on soft coatings.

    Notes: Der erhöhte Gehalt an freier Enthalpie dünner im Vakuum aufgedampfter Schichten gegenüber demjenigen des Massivkörpers desselben Stoffes kann für Metalle elektrochemisch auf Grund der Negativierung des reversiblen Elektrodenpotentials und der Grösse seines Temperaturkoeffizienten erfasst werden. Am Beispiel des Silbers wird gezeigt, dass diese Abweichung allein verursacht wird durch eine Verminderung der Sublimationsenergie. Der Effekt dieser Verminderung der Sublimationsenergie auf die Bindungsfestigkeit von Atomen auf Oberflächen wird anhand der KOSSEL-STRANSKI'schen Theorie diskutiert. Es wird auch gezeigt, dass bei Kenntnis des Betrages der Potentialnegativierung und desjenigen des Temperaturkoeffizienten in gewissen Fällen die Korngrösse dünner Schichten abgeschätzt werden kann.
