Notes: Summary The organization of the projection from the pretectal region to the inferior olive in the cat was studied by means of retrograde protein tracing and experimental degeneration. Small injections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) were made into various parts of the inferior olive from a ventral approach. The number of nerve cells in the pretectal nuclei retrogradely labelled with HRP was counted and put in relation to the site of injection. Labelled cells were only found in the posterior pretectal nucleus (NPP), the nucleus of the optic tract (NOT) and the anterior pretectal nucleus (NPA). Most labelled cells were found in NPP and NOT in cases in which the rostral or caudal levels of the principal olive were labelled by the injection. NAP labelling occurred in one case with a very rostral injection of the inferior olive. Unilateral electrolytical destruction of the pretectal region produced terminal degeneration in the ipsilateral inferior olive. The heaviest ipsilateral degeneration was found in the upper half of the principal and dorsal accessory olives, and caudally in the ventrolateral outgrowth, the dorsal cap and nucleus β with the adjacent part of the medial accessory olive. Some functional implications of the findings are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Long-term manometry of the tubular esophagus was performed in 20 consecutive patients (18 females, 2 males; median age 56.5 years) with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) and a control group of 20 healthy subjects (18 females, 2 males; median age 56.5 years). The measurements were performed via a data logger of 1 MByte memory capacity with the help of two pressure sensors placed 8 and 18 cm above the lower esophageal sphincter. Esophageal contractions were analyzed with respect to pressure amplitudes in the esophagus distal and proximal, quotient of pressure amplitudes distal/proximal, number of contraction waves in a 24-h period, and kind of spreading (propulsive, simultaneous). In the PSS group there was a significant decrease in pressure amplitudes in the distal sensor (median 31.5 versus 39.5 mbar in controls, P 〈 0.02), in the quotient of pressure amplitudes distal/proximal (median 0.885 versus 1.25 in controls, P 〈 0.001), in the number of waves in 24 h (median 939.5 versus 1656 in controls, P 〈 0.01), and in the occurrence of propulsive waves (median 34% versus 57% in controls, P 〈 0.01). Fifteen patients (75%) had hypomotility disorders as compared to the control group, in which the lower limit of normal values was defined by the 5th percentile of descriptive analysis. These first data of long-term manometry in patients with PSS indicate that long-term manometry may be an effective method for identifying esophageal involvement in PSS.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary 1. Lactulose was administered orally in 20 g quantities to four adult, healthy human volunteers. It appeared that this sugar was absorbed in traces only, if at all. 2. Ten strains each of B. bifidum and Ristella, 4 of L. acidophilus, 7 of Lancefield group D streptococci, 5 each of E. coli and Salmonella, one of Sh. sonnei, 2 of Proteus, 3 of Cl. perfringens and 6 of Staph. aureus, all freshly isolated from adult and infant stools, were examined for attack on lactulose, using Mossel & Martin's one tube modification of Hugh & Leifson's 0/F-test. B. bifidum, L. acidophilus and the D-streptococci dissimilate this sugar, yielding predominantly lactic acid; Cl. perfringens attacks lactulose with vigorous gas formation. E. coli and Staph. aureus attack lactulose only very weakly, whereas Ristella, Proteus, Salmonella and Shigella seem unable to metabolize this sugar. 3. The action of lactulose in the human intestine seems therefore to originate from bacterial attack on the non absorbed sugar occurring in the colon. This results in the formation of considerable amounts of lactic acid, which both suppresses the development of acid-sensitive intestinal bacteria and stimulates peristalsis.
Notes: Zusammenfassung 1.

Notes: Abstract If the input signals of the visual system in the cat are statistical patterns in space and time, a complete system analysis can be carried out. What counts here as a system are the neuronal networks between retina and recording site. In the case of linearity, one obtains the temporal impulse response functions at every point in the receptive field with the aid of correlation methods. The measuring time is about one minute. Some aspects of the procedure are explained in terms of examples. The method of measurement also makes it possible to determine the characteristic function of the system in time and space between different recording sites within the cortex. It is possible to specialize the procedure for analysing the stationary space dependent behaviour of neuronal networks. The extension of the analysis procedure allows a concise, relatively simple description for nonlinear systems in which linear and nonlinear subsystems can be separated. Besides this, there are no restrictions concerning the kind of nonlinearity. A second paper will present the detailed experimental application of these methods.

Notes: Abstract Superimposing additively a two-dimensional noise process to deterministic input signals (bars) the neurons of area 17 show a class-specific reaction for the task of signal extraction. Moving both parts of the signals simultaneously and varying the signal to noise ratio (S/N) the simple cells achieve the same performance as resulted from the psychophysical experiment. Type I complex cells extract moving deterministic signals (i.e. bars) from the stationary noise, whereas in the answers of Type II complex cells the statistical parts of the signals predominate. Considering the different cell types each as a series of a linear and a nonlinear system one obtains the cell specific space-time frequency and the amplitude characteristics.

Notes: Abstract. It has been shown for the motor cortex of primates, that an arm trajectory is coded as a population vector formed by many neurons with activities correlated with arm movements. Recently, neurons in the primate superior colliculus that also display activities related to arm movements have been described. In the present paper we show that a subpopulation of this type of neuron is able to code for limb movement by the population vector. However, the cosine function cannot describe these neurons adequately. Rather the Fisher distribution yields a much better description of arm-movement-related cells in the superior colliculus.
