    Notes: Abstract Gliomas of the optic nerve, although typically of pilocytic (WHO grade I) histology, can present within the spectrum of astrocytic neoplasia including glioblastoma (WHO grade IV). In certain cases, histologic features alone make the distinction between pilocytic and diffuse astrocytomas difficult. We reviewed 22 cases of optic nerve gliomas, 19 of which were pilocytic astrocytomas (PA), and 3 of which were diffuse, non-pilocytic astrocytomas. The cases were evaluated for their clinical course, radiographic appearance, histologic grade, and proliferation indices as detected by MIB-1 (Ki-67) and p53 antibodies. Of the 19 PA, 14 showed no tumor growth by magnetic resonance imaging, and had Ki-67 and p53 labeling indices (LI) of 〈 1%. The other 5 PA exhibited aggressive behavior manifest by marked diffuse infiltrative tumor growth causing death in 2 patients, 1 of whom was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 1 (immunoperoxidase and radiographs not available), and marked local growth with an average time to growth of 39.3 months, a Ki-67 LI of 2–3%, and a p53 LI of 〈 1% in three others. Three of the five aggressive PA histologically demonstrated a finely reticulated pattern, a pattern that appears as an exaggeration or expansion of the normal neuroglia of the optic nerve, and may simulate a diffuse low-grade astrocytoma. Two demonstrated the coarsely reticulated pattern, with the biphasic and microcystic pattern typical of PA. Three diffuse astrocytomas (2 anaplastic astrocytomas and 1 glioblastoma) originated clinically and radiographically from the optic nerve, and revealed a Ki-67 LI of 2–12%, a p53 LI of 2–8%, and an average time to growth of 8 months. We conclude that the majority of PA of the optic nerve are non-aggressive, stabilize radiographically, and have Ki-67 and p53 LI 〈 1%. However, a subpopulation of PA has a propensity for aggressive behavior, and are identified by a Ki-67 LI of 2–3% and a p53 LI of 〈 1%. Diffuse astrocytomas have both Ki-67 and p53 LI 〉 2%. Thus, in cases of aggressive optic nerve tumors in which the histologic review of biopsy material cannot confidently confirm the diagnosis of pilocytic or diffuse fibrillary glioma, a p53 LI of 〉 1% appears to favor the diagnosis of diffuse astrocytoma.

    Notes: Summary The rostal mesencephalon at the level of the posterior commissure was studied by light microscopy in two patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease, one patient with Alzheimer's disease, and one patient with senile dementia of Alzheimer's type. In the Parkinsonian cases, the rostral part of the nucleus of Edinger Westphal disclosed Lewy bodies in 3% of the neurons, neurofibrillary degeneration in 2% of the neurons, and a 54% neuronal loss. In Alzheimer's disease, 2% of Edinger Westphal neurons contained neurofibrillary degeneration, whereas in senile dementia of Alzheimer's type only rare neurofibrillary degeneration was evident in this nucleus. Neuronal loss was not apparent in the nucleus of Edinger Westphal in either of the Alzheimer's cases. The pathologic changes observed in this presumably cholinergic nucleus resemble in some respects changes reported in the cholinergic centers of the basal forebrain in these diseases. In addition, the central gray matter and pretectal region in Parkinson's disease contained a patchy increase in astroglia, some with scant reactive cell bodies; however, Lewy bodies were limited to that part of the central gray matter corresponding to the nucleus of Darkschewitsch. A few neurofibrillary tangles were present in the nucleus of Darkschewitsch in both diseases.

    Notes: Summary The neuropathologic findings in the brain of a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) engineer, who died subsequent to nitrogen inhalation, are reported. Findings which are unusual in other forms of anoxia included relative preservation of neurons in the Sommer sector of the hippocampus and a pattern of damage similar to that of “hypotensive brain stem necrosis” in the cranial nerve nuclei. Some lesions conformed exactly to gray matter structures, whereas others disclosed no respect for anatomic boundaries. Both selective necrosis and relative preservation of neurons were evident in different regions of the brain. Distinct differences between lesions in various areas of the CNS suggest the importance of multiple and complex pathogenetic mechanisms in anoxia caused by exposure to nitrogen.

    Notes: The electron attachment rate constants ka for SF6 have been measured in dilute mixtures of SF6 in high pressure (〉1 atm) N2, Ar, and Xe buffer gases at room temperature (T≈300 K) over a wide E/N range (electric field strength to gas number density ratio), corresponding to mean electron energies 〈ε〉 from near thermal electron energies (≈0.04 eV) to 〈ε〉≈4.3 eV. Particular attention has been paid to the effects of space charge distortion, molecular impurities, and changes in the electron energy distribution function on the measured electron attachment rate constant values at the lower E/N values in these mixtures. The present measured thermal electron attachment rate constants in SF6/N2 and SF6/Xe gas mixtures are in excellent agreement with recent accurate measurements of these parameters in several SF6/buffer gas mixtures. At higher 〈ε〉 values, the present SF6/N2 measurements are in fair agreement with previous measurements, while no previous measurements using Ar and Xe buffer gases have been published. These measurements have been used in numerical two term, spherical harmonic Boltzmann equation analyses of the electron motion in these gas mixtures to obtain the low energy (〈10 eV) nondissociative and dissociative electron attachment cross sections for SF6. The present derived electron attachment cross sections are compared with recently measured and derived nondissociative and dissociative electron attachment cross sections for SF6. The primary value of the present results is in the large and overlapping 〈ε〉 ranges of the present ka measurements for the three buffer gases compared with that for SF6/N2 gas mixtures alone, which in turn, makes these measurements ideal for testing cross-section sets in SF6 for use in many applied studies.

    Notes: Measurements are reported of the electron attachment (ηT/N) and ionization (αT/N) coefficients for the perfluoroalkanes n-CNF2N+2 (N=1 to 4) over the density-reduced electric field (E/N) range 5×10−17≤E/N≤400×10−17 V cm2 using pulsed Townsend (PT) experimental techniques. The present ηT/N measurements are the first to be obtained for pure C2F6, C3F8, and n-C4F10 at low E/N values. The ηT/N measurements in C3F8 and n-C4F10 are dependent on gas pressure over a wide E/N range in agreement with previous high pressure electron attachment rate constant ka measurements in these gases. The dissociative and nondissociative electron attachment processes for C3F8 and n-C4F10 have been quantified from the pressure dependence of the measured electron attachment coefficients ηT/N as a function of E/N. The thermal electron attachment rate constants (ka)th and the high voltage limiting electric field strengths (E/N)lim obtained from the present measurements are in good agreement with previous literature values.

    Notes: The attachment of low-energy (〈10 eV) electrons to the open-chain i-C4F10, i-C5F12, neo-C5F12, and to the cyclic c-C4F8 and c-C5F10 perfluoroalkanes has been studied using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOFMS) and a high pressure electron swarm technique as well as the TOFMS results reported earlier on c-C4F8 and i-C4F10. Both long-lived parent anions (autodetachment lifetimes τa 〉10−6 s) and dissociative attachment fragment anions were observed for these molecules in the mass spectrometric study. The relative cross sections for negative ion formation and the τa of the long-lived parent anions were measured as a function of electron energy in the mass spectrometric study. The absolute total electron attachment rate constants as a function of the mean electron energy have been measured in the swarm study and used to calculate the total electron attachment cross sections as a function of electron energy. Both studies have shown a strong dependence of dissociative and nondissociative electron attachment processes on the structure of the molecules studied. For neo-C5F12, the predominant anion is the fragment C4F−9. In contrast, for i-C4F10, i-C5F12, c-C4F8, and c-C5F10, the parent anions are stronger than any of the fragment anions. Energetic considerations have been employed to identify fragmentation mechanisms of the negative ion states (NISs) leading to the formation of the observed fragment anions and to deduce some thermochemical data. The positions of the NISs, the observed differences in the cross sections for parent and fragment anion formation, and the types of the fragment anions formed for the various molecules are discussed.

    Notes: The Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) has observed gamma-rays bursts with the highest energy gamma-rays and the longest high energy emission to date. EGRET measures the high energy gamma-rays with its large NaI scintillator (1 to 200 MeV) and its spark chamber (30 MeV to 30 GeV). The spark chamber also measures time and arrival directions of individual photons allowing locations for the energetic bursts to be determined. Since the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory launch in 1991, EGRET has observed five bursts in the spark chamber with several having gamma-ray energies grater than 1 GeV. The recording breaking burst, GRB940217, had gamma-rays up to 18 GeV and lasted over 5000 seconds. The results for the energetic bursts are presented. The high energies observed from these gamma-ray bursts set constraints for the burst distances.

    Notes: Oysters have been introduced worldwide to 73 countries, but the ecological consequences of the introductions are not fully understood. Economically, introduced oysters compose a majority of oyster harvests in many areas. Oysters are ecosystem engineers that influence many ecological processes, such as maintenance of biodiversity, population and food web dynamics, and nutrient cycling. Consequently, both their loss, through interaction of overharvest, habitat degradation, disease, poor water quality, and detrimental species interactions, and their gain, through introductions, can cause complex changes in coastal ecosystems. Introductions can greatly enhance oyster population abundance and production, as well as populations of associated native species. However, introduced oysters are also vectors for non-native species, including disease-causing organisms. Thus, substantial population, community, and habitat changes have accompanied new oysters. In contrast, ecosystem-level consequences of oyster introductions, such as impacts on flow patterns, sediment and nutrient dynamics, and native bioengineering species, are not well understood. Ecological risk assessments for future introductions must emphasize probabilities of establishment, spread, and impacts on vulnerable species, communities, and ecosystem properties. Many characteristics of oysters lead to predictions that they would be successful, high-impact members of recipient ecosystems. This conclusion leaves open the discussion of whether such impacts are desirable in terms of restoration of coastal ecosystems, especially where restoration of native oysters is possible.
