    Notes: Abstract – The blue shiner (Cyprinella caerulea) is a federally threatened cyprinid that inhabits discrete habitat patches, but whether the fish in these patches represent distinct subpopulations or a continuous population is not known. Movement patterns of adult blue shiners among habitat patches in the Conasauga River (Tennessee and Georgia, USA) were investigated to determine if movement among patches was unrestricted, or if each patch represented a relatively discrete subpopulation. Movement was restricted to a small proportion of individuals at any given time, and most fish that moved did so between adjacent habitat patches. The average distance moved by blue shiners over the two study periods (1997 and 1998) was just 130.7 m. Riffle and glide mesohabitats were not barriers to the dispersal of blue shiners, and fish moved both upstream and downstream in approximately equal numbers. It is suggested that the fish that are mobile at a given time are responsible for recolonization of habitat patches via cumulative, stepwise movements between adjacent patches, and that intervening patches must be present to maintain connectivity of the entire population. Blue shiners exist as relatively discrete subpopulations in the Conasauga River. This finding emphasizes the importance of protecting habitat integrity throughout the entire course of the river to prevent isolation of subpopulations. This species may be used as a model for the conservation of other patch-restricted aquatic species./〉

    Notes: Abstract – Imperiled pygmy sculpins are known from only one locality in Alabama, USA. One conservation strategy for the species is the creation of another population by introducing the species into a suitable habitat. Before such action is considered, however, an understanding of the life history, including reproductive biology and habitat use, of the species must be obtained. In this study, nesting of pygmy sculpins was found to peak in July, although the species has an extended reproductive period. Preferred nesting sites had higher flow and shallower water depth than the surrounding habitat. Pygmy sculpins readily used artificial nest substrates that were introduced into the spring run, where natural nest substrate was uncommon./〉

    Notes: Abstract –  Fish assemblages from a historical (1968) pre-impoundment survey of the Bear Creek system (Tennessee River drainage) were compared with fish assemblages from recent collections to examine spatial recovery in stream fish assemblages. A positive relationship was present for species richness and distance from impoundment for recent collections but was not significant for historic collections from the same sites with distance superimposed from the impoundments. A positive relationship was also present for similarity and distance using Jaccard's Index and the Morisita Similarity Index. Recent fish assemblages were dissimilar to historical collections immediately below impoundments, but were increasingly similar at 10–20 km. The results suggest that recovery patterns for stream fish assemblages are present downstream for some types of impoundments and that remnants of the stream community persist downstream from existing impoundments.

    Notes: Abstract Changes in tissue and plasma isoenzymes of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were qualitatively and quantitatively determined for male and female Atlantic salmon parr, silvery parr, smolt, immature grilse, prespawning grilse and postspawning grilse using cellulose acetate electrophoresis, densitometry and spectrophotometry. Tissue ALP isoenzymes were isolated from intestine, kidney, bone, liver, and gonad and compared to plasma isoenzymes. Parr plasma displayed three isoenzymes from bone and liver (slow and fast). During smoltification, ALP activity increased in tissue extracts from liver, gonad, and kidney of males and females. Total plasma ALP activity also increased and was due to slow and fast liver isoenzymes. During ovarian development, total ALP plasma activity increased in females and was due mostly to liver isoenzymes and an incompletely identified isoenzyme or isoenzyme mixture (band 2). However, in males total ALP plasma activity did not increase during maturation and no band 2 was evident. In male and female maturing adult grilse, bone ALP activity declined and the isoenzyme band evident in parr plasma could not be detected. ALP activity declined in the plasma of postspawning males and females. In females this was due partly to the total clearance of band 2 from the plasma, together with lowered levels of liver isoenzymes. Treatment of postspawned grilse in February and March with triiodothyronine and thyroxine elevated plasma thyroid hormone levels and increased plasma ALP levels. In conclusion, plasma ALP isoenzyme activities change with physiological state, and knowledge of the conditions governing these changes is important when using these enzymes as a diagnostic tool.

    Notes: Abstract We demonstrated previously that esophageal temperature (T es) remains elevated by ≈0.5°C for at least 65 min after intense exercise. Following exercise, average skin temperature (T avg) and skin blood flow returned rapidly to pre-exercise values even though T es remained elevated, indicating that the T es threshold for vasodilation is elevated during this period. The present study evaluates the hypothesis that the threshold for sweating is also increased following intense exercise. Four males and three females were immersed in water (water temperature, T w = 42°C) until onset of sweating (Immersion 1), followed by recovery in air (air temperature, T a = 24°C). At a T a of 24°C, 15 min of cycle ergometry (70% VO2max) (Exercise) was then followed by 30 min of recovery. Subjects were then immersed again (T w = 42°C) until onset of sweating (Immersion 2). Baseline T es and T skavg were 37.0 (0.1)°C and 32.3 (0.3)°C, respectively. Because the T skavg at the onset of sweating was different during Exercise [30.9 (0.3)°C] than during Immersion 1 and Immersion 2 [36.8 (0.2)°C and 36.4 (0.2)°C, respectively] a corrected core temperature, T es (calculated), was calculated at a single designated skin temperature, T sk(designated), as follows: T es(calculated) = T es + [β/(1−β)][T skavg−T sk(designated)]. The T sk(designated) was set at 36.5°C (mean of Immersion 1 and Immersion 2 conditions) and β represents the fractional contribution of T skavg to the sweating response (β for sweating = 0.1). While T es(calculated) at the onset of sweating was significantly lower during exercise [36.7 (0.2)°C] than during Immersion 1 [37.1 (0.1)°C], the threshold of sweating during Immersion 2 [37.3 (0.1)°C] was greater than during both Exercise and Immersion 1 (P 〈 0.05). We conclude that intense exercise decreases the sweating threshold during exercise itself, but elicits a subsequent short-term increase in the resting sweating threshold.

    Notes: Abstract Nest association, or the habit of spawning in the nest of another species, is a widespread reproductive strategy among North American fishes, especially minnows. The hosts of nest associates include sunfishes and nest-building minnows. Previous experiments demonstrated that nest associates benefited from the parental care of hosts. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of nest associates on hosts, and thereby characterize the relationship as parasitic, mutualistic or commensal. Since hosts with associates had higher reproductive success than those without associates in this experiment, I characterize nest association as a mutualistic relationship, at least in some systems. The dilution effect is the proposed mechanism responsible for the higher reproductive success of hosts with associates.
