    Notes: Abstract Organic precursors containing Al and Zr atoms were synthesized from an aluminium chelate compound and zirconium n-butoxide. A ZrO2-Al2O3 composite powder was prepared by the thermal decomposition of these precursors. An amorphous phase exists to higher temperatures for this ZrO2-Al2O3 powder than for a comparable powder prepared from aluminium sec-butoxide and zirconium n-butoxide. In addition the tetragonal ZrO2 phase was stabler in this ZrO2-Al2O3 powder than in a comparison powder. The ZrO2 grains were 50–500 nm in diameter and were homogeneously dispersed in the Al2O3 matrix after heating at 1400 °C.

    Notes: Abstract Zr-Al organometallic compounds have been spray-dried and heated at temperatures 600 to 1400°C to prepare ZrO2-Al2O3 composite powders. The powders consist of balloon-like particles 0.5 to 2 μm in diameter with homogeneously dispersed tetragonal ZrO2 grains 0.1 to 0.2 μm in diameter. The tetragonal fraction of ZrO2 in the composite powders is higher than that in the powders prepared from sols of Zr(OBun)4 and Al[OCH(CH3)2]3. The fraction is affected by the organofunctional group in the Zr-Al compounds.

    Notes: Abstract Sialon powders have been prepared by heating mixtures of SiO2, Al2O3 2H2O and carbon in flowing nitrogen at 1470° C. The nitrogen content in the product powder increased with increasing added carbon, and was independent of both the flow rate of nitrogen gas and the surface area of pellet. The amount of SiO lost increased with an increase in the flow rate of nitrogen gas and surface area of the pellet and with a decrease in the amount of added carbon. A major part of the SiO evolved by the carbon reduction was trapped by carbon then consumed by carbon reduction and nitridation to form the sialon powder. The rest of the SiO was carried out of the system by the nitrogen gas. The amount of SiO lost and the nitrogen content can be estimated using the residual carbon content.

    Notes: Abstract The mixture of a Zr-Al metallo-organic compound and Al2O3 powder yields dense ZrO2-Al2O3 composite ceramics. The fraction of the tetragonal ZrO2 phase in as-sintered ZrO2-Al2O3 ceramics is almost 100% and the ZrO2 grains at about 500 nm in diameter are dispersed in the matrix. The ceramics have high fracture toughness and bending strength.

    Notes: Polypropylene (PP) and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) were mixed in a two-roll mill. The mixed compounds were molded on the plate by using a compression press heater. To improve the affinity of the relation between CaCO3 and the PP matrix, we modified the CaCO3 surface through chemical reaction with alkyl dihydrogen phosphates. The CaCO3 content and size modification affected the crystallization behavior of the filled PP composites. The crystallization temperature in the nonisothermal crystallization process increased with the increase of CaCO3 content and the decrease of CaCO3 size. The crystallization temperature revealed the function of log (1 + Ts) (Ts, total surface area of CaCO3) irrespective of CaCO3 content and size for modified and unmodified systems, respectively. The shoulder or double crystallization peak of PP composites is recognized for the unmodified system (particle sizes: 1.0 and 4.5 μm).

    Notes: The tensile behavior of polypropylene (PP) filled with calcium carbonate particles has been studied using a tensile test. In particular, the effect of strain rate, filler content, and filler size upon the elastic modulus, yield stress, and strain of surface-modified and unmodified particles-filled PP were investigated. The results indicated that the elastic modulus and yield stress of an unmodified system were increased with an increase of strain rate and filler content, and with a decrease of filler size. The yield strain was decreased with an increase of filler content, and with a decrease of filler size, but did not depend on the strain rate. Although the dependence of elastic modulus on the filler size was maintained even by the surface-modified fillers, that dependence on the strain rate and filler content was decreased by such fillers. This may be because the modifier is present at the interface of filler and polymer matrix.

    Notes: The influence of the polarity of polymers on the degree of dispersion of BaTiO3 particles in BaTiO3/polymer composite systems was investigated. The BaTiO3 polymer composite systems were prepared from BaTiO3 particles and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) or ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) with 7 and 15 wt % vinyl acetate. Scanning electron microscopy observation showed that BaTiO3 particles aggregated in the polymer matrices and dispersed more readily into the EVA matrix than into LDPE. The shift of the β-peak temperature by ca. +5°C in the temperature dispersion of the loss modulus was observed for EVA-BaTiO3 composite systems in dynamic mechanical property measurement. On the other hand, the β-peak temperature of the polymers filled with graphite particles, which have hydrophobic surfaces, was almost constant in a volume fraction region of 0-0.3. The ellipsoidal axes' ratios given by comparison of experimental dielectric constant values and theoretical ones using the Maxwell equation were 4.2, 3.6, and 3.1 for LDPE/BaTiO3, EVA(7%)/BaTiO3, and EVA(15%)/BaTiO3 composite systems, respectively. The axes' ratio decreased by the introduction of polar vinyl acetate groups into nonpolar LDPE. The results confirmed that the polarity of the polymers was one of the key factors governing the dispersibility of BaTiO3 particles in the polymer matrix. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
