    Notes: Abstract  Clear cell meningioma, about 20 cases of which have been reported in the literature, is a morphological variant of meningioma. The authors report a case of spinal clear cell meningioma that occurred in a child. A 14-month-old girl showed gradually progressive paraparesis 1 month after she started to walk. Magnetic resonance image showed an intradural extramedullary mass compressing the conus medullaris and cauda equina. Complete excision of the tumor was done, and the patient gradually recovered from motor weakness and neurogenic bladder. Histological examinations along with immunohistochemical and ultrastructural investigations allowed a diagnosis of clear cell meningioma. During the follow-up period, a recurrent mass lesion was detected on the 8-month follow-up MR image in the same region. Because clear cell meningioma might be biologically aggressive, postoperative adjuvant therapy and close follow-up investigation should be considered.

    Notes: Abstract Liver, muscle, kidney, and feather samples from nine species of seabirds were analyzed for total and organic (methyl) mercury (MM). Total mercury (TM) levels in liver showed great intra- and inter-species variations, with the concentrations varied from 306 μg/g (dry weight) in black-footed albatross (Diomedea nigripes) to 4.9 μg/g in arctic tern (Sterna paradisaea), while MM levels were less relatively variable. The order of MM concentrations in tissues of all the seabirds except oldsquaw (Clangula hyemalis) was as follows: liver 〉 kidney 〉 muscle. The mean percentage of MM in total was 35%, 36%, and 66% in liver, kidney, and muscle, respectively, for all the species. Statistically significant negative correlations were found between the proportion of MM to TM and concentrations of TM in the liver and muscle of black-footed albatross and in the liver of laysan albatross. Furthermore, the percentage of MM decreased with an increase in TM concentrations in the liver, muscle, and kidney of all the species. Black-footed albatross had the highest concentration and burden of mercury in the liver, wherein more than 70% of the TM occurred as inorganic mercury. On the other hand, the mercury burdens in feathers were less than 10% of the body burdens, indicating that excretion of mercury by moulting is negligible. The results suggest that some seabirds are capable of demethylating MM in the tissues (mainly in liver), and store mercury as an immobilizable inorganic form in the liver. It is noteworthy that the species with a high degree of demethylation capacity and slow moulting pattern showed low mercury burdens in feathers.

    Notes: Abstract A glutathione S-transferase (GST) gene was cloned in Arabidopsis thaliana. The gene, designated ATGST 1, contained the entire transcription unit in three exons interrupted by two introns. The combined sequence of three exons had an open reading frame which predicted a GST protein of 208 amino acids. Gene transcription has been reported to be induced by pathogen attack and dehydration. In the present study northern blot analysis using a gene-specific DNA probe in the 3′ untranslated region revealed that expression of the gene was also rapidly induced by other environmental stresses such as wounding, low temperature, high salt and DPE herbicide treatment. The promoter region of the gene contained the sequence motif ATTTCAAA that is known to be present in ethylene-responsive elements and other motifs that are highly conserved amongst stress-inducible gene promoters.

    Notes: Abstract. The concentrations of 14 trace elements (Li, V, Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, Se, Rb, Sr, Ag, Cd, Cs, Pb, and Hg) were determined in tissues and organs of three species and in the liver of 11 species of seabirds. Comparatively high concentrations of Li, Co, Sr, and V were found in the femur. Cd, Se, Cu, and Mn concentrations were relatively higher in the kidney than in other tissues and organs. Rb, Cs, and Pb concentrations were rather uniform among tissues. Concentrations of essential elements such as Mn, Cu, and Co were comparable among seabird species, except high Cu concentrations in northern giant petrel. Among nonessential elements, concentrations of Cd and Hg were variable according to seabird species. Pb levels were low in all the species. High Se levels (100 μg/g dry weight) were found in the liver of black-footed albatross and grey petrel. There were significant positive correlations between Se and Cd concentrations in three species and between Se and Hg in black-footed albatross, suggesting that Se has an antagonistic action on the toxic effects of Cd and Hg. Concentrations of Li, V, Ag, and Cs were usually low (less than 1 μg/g dry weight).

    Notes: Summary Stabilities of Ca-alginate fiber and ACP(Alginate + Cclite R-634 + Pectin) gel fibers containing different concentrations of alginate were tested. The results showed that the stability of ACP gel fiber containing 5% alginate(5% ACP gel fiber) was better than those of other fibers tested, considering the degree of release of yeast from gel fiber. Scanning electron microscopic observation proved the above results, and concentrations of cell and ethanol obtained by 5% ACP gel fiber were higher than those of others, respectively.
