    Notes: A systematic study of the effect of sputtering conditions, for each layer of the magneto-optical SiN 500 A(ring)/TbFeCo 200 A(ring)/SiN 200 A(ring)/Al 600 A(ring) disks, such as power and Ar gas flow rate on the noise levels (NL) and carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) was performed for the 532 nm high density storage media in this work. The NL dropped to its minimum value of −71.3 dB as the sputtering power for the first SiN increased from 0.5 to 1.5 kW. With a further increase in sputtering power to 2.5 kW, it sharply increased to −64.5 dB. This was ascribed to the smooth and dense surface of the first layer at 1.5 kW, as was observed in the atomic forces microscopy images. The spherical, isotropic, fine grains with a diameter of about 0.2–0.7 μm at 1.5 kW were found, while the longitudinal, directional granular features with a length of 2.5 μm were seen at 2.5 kW. The highest CNR of 46.3 dB was observed at 0.6 kW with a constant sputtering Ar gas flow rate of 25 sccm for the magneto-optical layer. The sputtering conditions for other layers are as follows: 1.5 kW with sputter Ar/N2 gas flow rate of 30 sccm/11 sccm for the first and third SiN layer, and 0.6 kW with 25 sccm of Ar for the Al reflection layer. This is due to the smooth surface morphologies of the magneto-optical layer at this optimum sputtering pressure, as previously reported in similar research. To obtain a high readout signal, the phase compensation for the elliptic laser beam has been considered. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present detailed B penetration studies from B-doped polysilicon through alternate gate dielectric candidate HfSixOy films. No detectible B penetration is observed for annealing times as long as 20 s after 950 °C. Considerable B incorporation into the Si substrate is observed for annealing temperatures higher than 950 °C. By modeling the B depth profiles, we calculated the B diffusivities through HfSixOy to be higher than the corresponding diffusivities for SiO2. B diffusion through grain boundaries after HfSixOy crystallization is proposed to be responsible for the enhanced B diffusivity observed. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A torus knot model is presented to analyze the chiral wave propagation of photonic quantum-ring lasers in a three-dimensional Rayleigh–Fabry–Perot toroidal cavity. The Rayleigh–Fabry–Perot cavity gives rise to peculiar multichromatic spectra with nonequal intermode spacings. In particular, the knot model analysis suggests a strange three-dimensional effective index ellipsoid for the cavity with a large birefringence of neff3D(z)−neff2D(x,y)(approximate)0.4–0.5. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Interdiffusion barrier characteristics of molybdenum thin film with aluminum-1% Si is studied between 733 and 763 K via sheet and contact resistance measurements, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, secondary ion mass spectrometry, and x-ray diffraction analysis. The results indicate that thermal annealing of Mo/Al-1% Si thin film couples leads to MoAl12 compound formation initially as a nonplanar front, but extensive annealing results in complete transformation of Al-1% Si to MoAl12 and a significant increase in contact resistance. The interdiffusion kinetics is diffusion controlled and shows parabolic time dependence, incubation periods, and extremely high activation energy value of 5.9 eV. The incubation periods and an high activation energy values are explained by the presence of silicon precipitates at the Mo/Al-1% Si interface. Implications of these observations to VLSI device characteristics are discussed and a safe time-temperature processing regime is proposed.

    Notes: Abstract. There have been very few cases of occupational allergies caused by herb materials. In this paper, we report a case of occupational asthma and rhinitis caused by two herb materials. Dioscorea batatas and Pinellia ternata which are known as Sanyak and Banha respectively. The patient had strong positive responses to grass pollens and cat fur, as well as to Sanyak and Banha extracts on skin-prick tests. Bronchoprovocation tests showed a dual asthmatic response to Sanyak whereas only an early asthmatic response to Banha. Serum specific IgE and IgG4 antibodies to Sanyak were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) but there was no specific IgE antibody binding to Banha. In order to further characterize the allergenie component of these extracts, sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and electroblotting studies were also performed. Three IgE binding components (29000, 57000, 63000 Da) were detected within the Sanyak extracts, but no IgE-binding component was noted within the Banha extracts. It is suggested that Sanyak can induce IgE-mediated bronchoconstriction in an exposed worker. Further studies are needed to investigate the pathogenetic mechanism triggered by Banha.

    Notes: Quinolone-resistant strains of the fish-pathogenic bacterium, Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida are distributed widely in cultured yellowtail, Seriola quinqueradiata (Temminck & Schlegel), in Japan. The quinolone resistance-determining region (QRDR) was amplified with degenerate primers, followed by cassette ligation-mediated PCR. Open reading frames encoding proteins of 875 and 755 amino acid residues were detected in the gyrA and parC genes, respectively. Resistant strains of P. damselae subsp. piscicida carried a point mutation only in the gyrA QRDR leading to a Ser-to-Ile substitution at residue position 83. No amino acid alterations were discovered in the ParC sequence. A mutation in the gyrA gene was also detected in nalidixic acid-resistant mutants of strain SP96002 obtained from agar medium containing increased levels of quinolone. These results suggest that GyrA, as in other Gram-negative bacteria, is a target of quinolone in P. damselae subsp. piscicida. Furthermore, we attempted to detect a point mutation using targeting-induced local lesions in genomes (TILLING), which is a general strategy used for the detection of a variety of induced point mutations and naturally occurring polymorphisms. We developed a new detection method for the rapid and large-scale identification of quinolone-resistant strains of P. damselae subsp. piscicida using TILLING.

    Notes: The authors report the case of a 21-year-old woman with a giant congenital nevocytic nevus (GCNN) who developed vitiligo at the age of 16 years on skin areas remote from the GCNN. This is the first reported case of GCNN developing neurotization combined with vitiliginous changes within the GCNN lesion. Treatment with PUVA achieved repigmentation of the vitiligo lesions, except for the hypochromic areas within the area of the nevus that were shielded from UVA radiation.

    Notes: A crystal structure can be determined from the X-ray intensity data of one asymmetric unit. As the function l(hkl) of the X-ray intensity has a center of symmetry if it is assumed that anomalous scattering is negligible, l(hkl) has the symmetry of a centrosymmetric point group, i.e. a Laue group. The asymmetric units of the intensity data are derived here for all Laue groups.
