    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Acht Wochen nach der Absetzung männlicher Ratten (Stamm Wistar) wurden die Tiere mit zwei Diätvarianten gefüttert: Die erste erhielt eine Zugabe von 0,3% Cholesterol, die zweite zusätzlich noch 5% von getrocknetem und gemahlenem Austernpilz. Die Zugabe von Austernpilz zur Cholesteroldiät verursachte eine Herabsetzung des Serumcholesterolspiegels um 33% und des Cholesterolgehaltes in der Leber um 27%. Der Gehalt an Serumtriazylglyzerolen wurde durch die Pilzzugabe zur Diät nicht beeinflußt, aber deren Gehalt in der Leber wurde um 41% verringert. An der Herabsetzung des Serumcholesterolspiegels waren die Lipoproteine von sehr niedriger Dichte mit 55% und die Lipoproteine von niedriger Dichte mit 38% beteiligt. Der Cholesterolgehalt in Lipoproteinen hoher Dichte wurde durch den Austernpilz nicht signifikant beeinflußt. Die Austernpilzzugabe zur Diät setzte die Cholesterolabsorption signifikant um 14% herab, was mittels der Verhältnismethode der Dualisotopenplasma-Methode bestimmt wurde. Die Austernpilze enthaltende Diät beschleunigte um 37% den Fraktionsveränderungsgrad des Cholesterols, was mittels der Zerfallskurvenanalyse von 4−14C-Cholesterol bestimmt wurde.
    Notes: Summary The content of cholesterol in the serum and liver of male Wistar rats fed, for the period of 8 weeks shortly after weaning, a diet containing 0.3% of cholesterol was reduced by 33 and 27% by the addition of 5% of dried oyster mushroom powder. Although the level of serum triacylglycerols was not affected by oyster mushroom, their content in liver of rats on mushroom diet was reduced by 41%. Very-low-density lipoproteins and low-density lipoproteins participated by 55 and 38%, respectively, in the total reduction of serum cholesterol. Cholesterol content in high-density lipoproteins was not significantly affected by oyster mushroom. Cholesterol absorption as determined by dual-isotope plasma ratio method was significantly reduced by 14% with oyster mushroom diet. Similarly, this diet increased by 42% the fractional catabolic rate of cholesterol determined by the analysis of decay curve of [4−14C]cholesterol.

    Notes: The sorption of poly(vinyl acetate) from benzene solution onto cellulose fibers has been investigated with particular attention to the nature and extent of the sorbed layer of polymer. The cellulose substrate has been varied by swelling pretreatments with water, ethylenediamine, and 18% sodium hydroxide. The density of the sorbed polymer after drying was found to be similar to that of the bulk polymer (1.19-1.20 g/cm3). Water vapor sorption isotherms were used to evaluate the internal surface of cellulose and the decrease in the surface area accessible to water after sorption of the polymer. This decrease was considered equivalent to the area covered by sorbed polymer. The amount of polymer sorbed per unit area (5.0-5.5 mg PVAc sorbed from benzene per 1 m2 of cellulose surface) was found to be substantially independent of the amount of sorbed polymer and of the swelling pretreatment, indicating that the thickness of the sorbed layer was quite uniform (40-50 Å). A comparison of the thickness of the sorbed layer in the dry state with the thickness of a monolayer with polymer molecules lying flat on the solid surface indicated that the fraction of the polymer segments attached directly to the surface was about 0.10. The amount of polymer sorbed per unit area of cellulose and consequently the thickness of the sorbed layer and the fraction of attachment can be affected by the nature of the solvent from which the polymer is sorbed.

    Notes: From the results of a structural analysis of cellulose crosslinked by a bifunctional reagent conclusions can be drawn merely on the distribution of crosslinks among individual hydroxyl groups. No information is available to what extent this distribution is caused either by different relative reactivities of the hydroxyl groups or incomplete accessibility of glucose units. If each glucose unit had the same chance of reaction, at low levels of conversion only monosubstituted units should be present in the reaction product. If, however, some higher substituted units are present, this means that at a certain level of conversion there must have been a smaller number of units capable of reaction to which relatively more reagent had access. The relation between relative reactivity and accessibility of cellulose hydroxyl groups obeys certain statistical laws of random selection. A theory explaining these laws is developed in the present work and supported by good agreement with experimental results exemplified by microcrystalline cellulose crosslinked by epichlorohydrin (1-chloro-2,3-epoxypropane). The relative reactivities of cellulose hydroxyls were found to increase in the order OH-3, OH-6, OH-2 in the crosslinking reaction with epichlorohydrin.
