Notes: Summary Between 1960 and 1983, 82 children were treated for Wilm's tumour at our hospital. The secondary effects and changes in the skeleton have been assessed. Radiotherapy was found to cause growth disturbances and osteochondrosis of variable degree, but not osteonecrosis. Since irradiation produces late damage, it should be applied symmetrically to the spine and the dose limited as far as is possible. A long follow up is necessary since skeletal damage can only be assessed after the end of growth.

Notes: Summary Radiotherapy for mammary carcinoma has special indications, depending upon the TNM stage and the localization. The use of megavoltage irradiation, a well-defined technique , and consideration of radiobiologic factors are neceBary. Radiotherapy is the only therapeutic poBibility in cases of recurrences.

Notes: Summary In 1967, especially experienced collegues from the departments of Surgery, Orthopedics and Radiology joined in an “Interdisciplinary team for bone tumors”. In a retrospective study more than 500 primary malignant bonetumors were collected. From 452 cases, the data of case history, stage of tumor, localisation, histological diagnosis, treatment and subsequent medical history were compiled by means of a computerized questinaire. A 5 year survival rate was reached for osteosarcomas in 26%, for chondrosarcomas in 36%, for myelogenous sarcomas in 11% and for fibrosarcomas in 25%. For osteosarcomas, which were treated surgically only, a final cure could affected in 35%. Therefore, osteosarcomas have a chance of healing which is definitely comparable with other malignant tumors. The time of survival depends upon the degree of tumor expansion at the onset of therapy. Good results can only be achieved by early diagnosis and immediate radical surgical tumor therapy. Irradiation without surgery does not provide sufficient results. In our opinion the “delayed indication of surgical treatment” cannot be justified.

Notes: Summary We believe we can state that irradiation of testicular tumors, using ultra-hard radiation forms and a correct treatment technique, is suitable to improve and to assure the surgical results without risk to the patient and to limit the extent of the surgical procedures. Even in the presence of distal metastases to the lung and to the bony skeleton their use is indicated and even with extensive metastases and late recurrences it still offers a chance of curability. Its use, however, necessitates close cooperation between the urologist and the radiologist and this cooperation must extend into the period of follow up observation.
