    Notes: In this paper we report the results of experiments that compare the x-ray emission from a laser spot in a radiation-filled hohlraum to that from a similar laser spot on a simple disk target. The studies were done using the Nova laser facility [J. D. Lindl, Phys. Plasmas 2, 3933 (1995)] in its 0.35 μm wavelength, 1 ns square pulse configuration. Focal spot intensities were 2–3.5×1015 W/cm2. X-ray images measured x-ray conversion in a hohlraum and from an isolated disk simultaneously. A laser spot inside a hohlraum emitted more x rays, after subtracting the background emission from the hohlraum walls, than a spot on a disk. Numerical models suggest the enhanced spot emission inside the hohlraum is due to an increase in lateral transport relative to the disk. Filamentation in the hohlraum will also increase the spot size. The models agree fairly well with the results on spot spreading but do not explain the overall increase in conversion efficiency. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Experiments investigating the pulse-width dependence of thermal x-ray conversion efficiencies (hν〈1.5 keV) in laser-heated gold plasmas are described. The results show that the instantaneous ratio of the emitted x-ray flux to the laser energy deposition rate increases throughout a 4-ns laser pulse. The studies were carried out using single arms of the 10-beam Nova laser facility. The irradiance was ∼4–5×1014 W/cm2 in the target plane as we varied the laser pulses' FWHM from 2 to 4 ns. The laser pulses were nominally flat-topped and contained between 1 and 2 kJ of (1)/(3) μm light. Time-resolved plasma radiation was monitored with a broadband, streaked x-ray spectrograph that has a roughly 30-ps time resolution and channels that are roughly 100–150 eV wide. One-dimensional numerical models run with the lasnex code produce a conversion efficiency that is nearly constant throughout the laser pulse. We discuss various approximations made in the one-dimensional models and conclude that none of them are a likely explanations for the increase of conversion efficiency with time. A preliminary two-dimensional model of a disk heated by a 3-ns pulse shows that the conversion efficiency increases throughout the pulse. The increase is due to soft x rays emitted from outside the laser spot. Further experiments and modeling will be carried out to assess these two-dimensional effects.

    Notes: Abstract Electrogenerative oxidation of ferrous ions in Fe2+/O2 cells to regenerate ferric ions for further use is demonstrated and some results for a hybrid type laboratory-scale reactor are presented. The use of graphite particle, packed-bed anodes for ferrous oxidation with gas diffusion type cathodes for oxygen reduction enables these cells to produce ferric ions at moderate current densities and low cell voltages in sulphuric acid solutions. These cells which utilize the rapid electrochemical, ferrous oxidation rate on graphite catalytic electrodes without any need for an external power source have potential application in hydrometallurgical leaching systems as well as in sulphur dioxide cleanup processes which incorporate the use of ferric ions. Continuous feed stream operation under mild conditions is a special advantage.

    Notes: Abstract The selective electrogenerative oxidation of benzyl alcohol in 1M sulfuric acid solutions was studied on several types of graphite supported platinum packed-bed anodes in a hybrid continuous-flow cell with an oxygen gas diffusion cathode. Benzaldehyde formed preferentially on all three catalytic packed-beds under electrogenerative conditions (Eanode〈0.75V) where the platinum catalyst was not irreversibly oxidized. Tin–palladium chloride graphite-pretreatment before platinum deposition through ethanol reduction significantly enhanced catalytic activity. This electrocatalyst provided current densities as high as 77mAcm-2 (superficial packed-bed cross sectional area) with a platinum loading of 0.89wt% Pt on graphite at relative low polarization. The origin of the catalytic activity is discussed and evidence is presented on the roles of tin and palladium. Benzyl alcohol oxidation appears to provide a sensitive probe reaction for demonstrating the existence of special types of catalytic centres.

    Notes: Abstract The electrogenerative oxidation of ferrous ions in 3m sulfuric acid, containing sulfur dioxide and subsequent sulfur dioxide oxidation, were studied in connection with potential regenerable sulfur dioxide remediation processes. The presence of sulfur dioxide in the feed stream did not affect cell performance. Oxidation of sulfur dioxide in the electrogenerative reactor took place when high ferrous to ferric ion conversions were obtained. Low cost graphite and iron ions served as an effective mediating system for promoting electron transfer to sulfur dioxide in strong acid solutions. In contrast, the homogenous reaction between iron(iii) and sulfur dioxide is relatively slow. In a separate batch reactor, the heterogeneous iron(iii) and sulfur dioxide reaction was found to be graphite catalysed, accounting for sulfur dioxide conversion observed in the electrogenerative reactor. Ferrous ion presence should be minimized, because it inhibits the desired catalysed reaction.

    Notes: Abstract Platinum-aluminum electrocatalysts supported on carbon black were investigated for electrogenerative sulfur dioxide (SO2) oxidation in hybrid type, liquid-phase SO2/O2 cells. Incorporation of aluminum with platinum electrocatalysts on carbon resulted in an electrocatalytic activity increase for S02 oxidation over the whole investigated range (1–30 at % aluminum). Significant synergistic effect from aluminum was observed when even a small amount, as little as 1 at %, was incorporated in the platinum. A maximum 68 % improvement was obtained when 10 at % aluminum was incorporated in the platinum. Results of an ESCA study and electrochemical platinum surface area measurement supported the hypothesis of an electronic interaction between platinum and aluminum.

    Notes: Abstract Most of the optical light from AM Her systems is cyclotron radiation. Simple models for the spectrum and polarization are successful for some systems, but in others the spectrum rolls over more gently at high frequencies and is polarized over a wider range of frequencies than the models predict. This paper considers the emission from both the sides and top of the accretion column and the effects of oscillations in the shock height. These features lead to a slower roll over at high frequencies than is found in the simple models, but it is still not as flat as in some of the AM Her systems.
