Notes: Summary Four e-beam-processed, planar electrodes with gaps between 0.5 and 4 μm were used to create quadrupole electric-field trap. The electrodes were immersed in an aqueous particle suspension and driven by kHz to MHz signals of several volts amplitude. Micron and submicron particles could be stably trapped by negative dielectrophoresis. Latex beads of 1000, 600, 100 and 14 nm diameter could be concentrated between the electrodes (positive dielectrophoresis) or levitated as condensed cloud (negative dielectrophoresis). The results are surprising since polarisation forces depend on the volume of the particle and, up to now, it was expected that thermal forces would dominate the behaviour of particles with diameters 〈100 nm. However, micron-scaled electrode configurations allow the application of extremely strong fields (up to 20 MV/m) and open up new perspectives for microparticle handling and macromolecule trapping.

Notes: Summary Since 1980, systematic investigations of the activity of the His-Purkinje system (HPS) by the biomagnetic method have been reported on both normal subjects and patients affected by different kinds of conduction disturbances. A first attempt to interpret the experimental results by means of a theoretical model satisfactorily accounted for the measured «ramp» patterns. Moreover, a good temporal coincidence was observed between magnetic signals and invasively recorded His bundle electrograms (HBE). An alternative explanation of the «ramp» pattern, in terms of atrial repolarization, has been recently proposed on the basis of animal experimental investigation. In order to try to solve this problem, we have carried out a twofold approach: a new second-order gradiometer, specifically designed for HPS activity investigation has been successfully set up and tested; it provides a sensitivity of $$20fT/\sqrt {Hz}$$ in the band width of interest ((0.5÷300) Hz). Second, a new model based on a closer correspondence to anatomical features of the HPS has been developed. This model provides well-defined patterns which are in quite good agreement with experimental results.

Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Durante gli ultimi dieci anni sono state eseguite misure invasive e non invasive di segnali elettrici e magnetici relativi al segmentoPR del ciclo cardiaco umano.
Notes: Summary Invasive and noninvasive measurements of the electric and magnetic signals of thePR segment of the human cardiac cycle have been performed during the last decade. It is still questionable whether the detected signals are produced by the activity of the heart conduction system or by atrial repolarization. We present a computer simulation of the magnetic-field patterns generated by a model of the human-heart conduction system (His-Purkinje system, HPS) over the anterior chest wall. The model is based on a close correspondence with the anatomical features of the HPS and accounts for the common His bundle (HB) and the left bundle branch (LBB) only. Computed fields clearly indicate a “ramp” pattern, strongly depending on the position over the chest. The model provides also a spikelike signal at the beginning of the ramp corresponding in time to the propagation of the activation from the HB to the proximal LBB. Both features are in good agreement with results of experimental measurements, thus supporting the hypothesis that the detected field patterns originate from HPS activity. A qualitative comparison with an experimental magnetocardiographic map is also shown.

Notes: The experimental results obtained with low noise dc superconducting quantum interference devices (dc-SQUIDs) are sometimes not well understood. In particular, when the critical current is high, very irregular voltage versus flux characteristics can be measured. On the other hand, when the critical current is low, the characteristics follow perfectly the resistively shunted junction model. We have studied the dynamics of a dc-SQUID in the presence of stray capacitance and shunting resistors imbalance. The equations describing a circuit model for this physical system are integrated numerically and the results are compared with voltage versus flux characteristics obtained from fabricated devices. We find that the theoretical analysis accounts very well for previously misunderstood experimental features of the dc-SQUID. This model can give more physical sense to the various regimes of behavior of the dc-SQUID giving more insight into the experimental results.
