    Notes: Summary The reversible equifinal state in the circulatory system was obtained in pentobarbital anesthetized dogs, cats and rats, by means of the intravenous injection of hexamethonium, with production of an autonomic blockade and a reduction of the systemic arterial pressure to about 50% of the initial value. Equifinality was also obtained in dogs after the cervical injection of lidocaine into the spinal canal; the functional exclusion of ponto-medullary cardiovascular centers also produced a decrease in arterial pressure. The reactivity of these dogs was studied during the occlusion (step function) of either the abdominal aorta or of both common carotid arteries and compared to the pressure responses during control periods. After the autonomic blockade with hexamethonium the normal increase in blood pressure observed after bilateral carotic occlusion was not present and the relative increase in blood pressure during aortic occlusion was not followed afterwards by the reflex decrease observed in control animals. The main differences between normal blood pressure regulation in the circulatory system under normal, or equifinal conditions are analyzed using hydraulic models, block diagrams and signal flow diagrams. From the present study it may be concluded that the mammalian circulatory system is able to accomplish the blood transport in the resting state, either with normal controls or in the equifinal condition, despite the fact that in the latter no autonomic regulations are present.

    Notes: Abstract We describe the fabrication and testing of dc SQUIDs (Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices) obtained by photolithographic patterning of YBa2Cu3O7−x thin films deposited both on SrTiO3 and MgO substrates. The Josephson junctions in the superconducting loop are of the “step-edge” type, where the weak link is obtained through the growth of grains with different orientations across suitably prepared steps previously etched on the substrate surface. TheI−V characteristics of the devices tested show multiple branches and instabilities having a weak dependence on the external magnetic field, probably due to formation of junction clusters on the substrate step. The SQUID devices showed quantum interference behavior and an easily detectable voltage modulation with the applied magnetic field at a temperature of 77 K.

    Notes: Abstract  Variation of the amplification effect of burrows of the leptodactylid frog Eupsophus emiliopugini on conspecific calls generated externally was investigated. Advertisement calls broadcast through a loudspeaker placed in the vicinity of a burrow were monitored with small microphones positioned inside and outside the cavity. For 150 presentations of calls of 15 individuals in 12 burrows, 134 were amplified and 16 were attenuated (range –6–13 dB). The fundamental resonant frequency of burrows, measured with broadcast noise and pure tones, averaged 814 Hz (range 302–1361 Hz) and covaried with burrow length. The dominant frequency of the calls of burrow occupants (average 1062 Hz, range 636–1459 Hz) was not correlated with the fundamental resonant frequency of these cavities. In burrows with low resonant frequencies, externally broadcast calls with high dominant frequencies were attenuated, or amplified to a lower extent than calls with lower dominant frequencies. The dominant frequencies of the calls experienced shifts towards the burrows’ fundamental resonant frequencies. The amplification of calls inside burrows of E. emiliopugini exhibits manifest variability, with considerable potential for facilitating acoustic interactions in this species.
