Notes:
Summary 1. Mitochondria in the adrenal cortex of the hedge-hog (Erinaceus europaeus L.) in the active and hibernating state were examined with the electron microscope. 2. The “sacculus mitochondrialis” is a special form of invaginations of the inner mitochondrial membran, which is arranged homologous to cristae and tubuli mitochondriales. It consists of a vesicle (diameter ca. 900 A) and a stalk (pediculus sacculi), by which the vesicle is connected with the inner parietal membrane of the mitochondria. Sacculi may be in continuity with tubuli and cristae and all three forms may occur within the same mitochondrion. No free vesicles have been observed. 3. Sacculi may form close packings. Stalks and granula mitochondrialia of about the same size as the sacculi may occupy empty places of the packing. Two forms of mitochondria with close packing are observed: a) Discochondria, which consist of a long, 0,3–0,5 μm thick part, from which wing like plates of about 0,2 μm thickness extend up to 10 μm. Within these plates are observed two layers of close-packed sacculi in hexagonal array. It is concluded that the plates grow out from long mitochondria which are found in the same cells, b) Round sphaerochondria with a diameter of up to 2 μm. They contain sacculi in hexagonal or cubic face centered close packing arrangement. It is concluded, that these mitochondria arise from the transformation of mitochondria with cristae or tubuli. Discochondria and sphaerochondria are also observed in the hibernating animal with reduced function of adrenal cortex. 4. The different configurations of mitochondrial inner membranes (cristae, tubuli, sacculi and other forms) are understood in relation to enzymes of oxydative phosphorylation. If the full complement of these enzymes is present cristae may arise. The lack of oxydative enzymes, which are dispensible for steroid synthesis, could result in the tubular or the saccular form, which could be an equivalent of spezialization for steroid synthesis with loss of oxydative phosphorylation. Other physico-chemical factors, expecially the influence of steroids on membrane configuration, are discussed. 5. It is assumed that the membranes of the sacculi bear enzymes for steroid synthesis. The saccular mitochondria (discochondria, sphaerochondria), which occur in large amounts in the inner cortex (up to 1 million sacculi/cell) would indicate a high capacity for steroid synthesis.
