Notes: Abstract  In view of the importance of biological treatment, it is the purpose of this work to present an overview of attached-growth biological wastewater treatment, considering the active role the engineers have to play in this field. This paper brings together conventional and advanced problems in the field of aerobic attached-growth (biofilm) wastewater treatment. Such an overview of biological wastewater treatment also precedes comments on some important aspects concerning the microorganisms responsible for wastewater treatment as well as considerations on the key factors governing the kinetic of the biological growth and waste treatment, together with application of fundamentals and kinetics to the analysis of these biological processes. A survey of the development of the attached-growth process and some modifications are given. These include additional details on the bioreactor progress and applications. Finally, some aspects regarding process intensification and bioreactor improvement were included.

Description / Table of Contents: The batch polymerization of vinyl chloride in suspension can be conducted with constant rate of polymerization up to very high degrees of conversion by means of a temperature programme. The temperature programme was determined from some conversion-time-curves of the batch polymerization of vinyl chloride at different temperatures. The molecular weight and the molecular weight distribution of the poly (vinyl chloride) produced with the temperature programme are in agreement with the calculated respectively expected values.

Description / Table of Contents: The processes caused by electric high frequency discharges on cellulose, polyester and polypropylene fibres, as degradation, crosslinking, weight loss, change of molecular weight, and the changes in thermal and mechanical properties have been investigated in dependence on the experimental conditions. The macroradicals formed in the fibre provide, in the presence of monomers, the basis of the synthesis of graft polymers, since the fibres treated by high frequency discharge include activated backbone chains.

Notes: A non-comprehensive review of several technical developments in the field of aerobic biological waste-water treatment engineering is carried out, considering the active role the engineers have to play in this field. This paper brings together conventional and advanced problems in the field of aerobic biological waste-water treatment.Such an overview of biological waste-water treatment also precedes comments on some important aspects concerning the microorganisms responsible for waste-water treatment as well as considerations of the application of fundamentals and kinetics to the analysis of the biological processes used most commonly for aerobic biological waste-water treatment.A survey of the development of the biological activated-sludge process and some modifications are given. Some problems implied in the conventional activated-sludge waste-water treatment are analyzed, considering conventional processes and bioreactor models (the continuous stirred-tank reactor model and the plug-flow reactor models of the activated-sludge process) as well as aerated lagoons.Further, modifications of the activated-sludge process are presented. These include additional details on the bioreactor progress and applications, with emphasis on aspects concerning airlift bioreactors and their variants, deep-shaft bioreactors and reciprocating jet bioreactors which are considered as the third generation of bioreactors owing to their important advantages in design, operation and performance in waste-water treatment. Sequencing-batch reactors and aerobic digestion processes, including conventional aerobic digestion, high-purity oxygen digestion, thermophilic aerobic digestion and cryophylic aerobic digestion are also reviewed. Finally, some aspects regarding the operational factors that are involved in the selection of the reactor type are included.

Description / Table of Contents: By the action of active plasma species, particularly electron, polymerization and grafting of acrylamide deposed in thin layers on fibres is achieved. the formation of graft copolymres on polyester and polypropylene fibres was detected by IR spectroscopy and themoxydative degradation. The modified fibres are characterized by higher water regain and improved mechanical properties.

Notes: Plasma induced solid-state polymerization of some potential „grafting-monomers“ (acrylamide, benzidine and alphanaphthylamine) for natural and synthetic fibres has been studied. Polymerization mechanisms have been suggested on the basis of the analytical data (IR, NMR, ESR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, gel-filtration, swelling properties, DTA measurements) of the polymers obtained in cold plasma conditions.
