    Notes: MDS-Plus is a general-purpose, data acquisition software package for pulsed physics experiments. It is based on the concept of an experiment model. The experiment model can be defined by means of the experiment description. The experiment description is a text description of the logical structure of the experiment, which defines the hardware structure together with the data acquisition actions, their sequence, and their interdependencies. The experiment description is then compiled into optimized internal data structures. A language-sensitive editor provides a user-friendly tool for producing syntactically correct experiment descriptions. The major design choices of syntax and implementation are presented and its integration with the preparation of the experiment is discussed.

    Notes: An array of single Langmuir probes is routinely used in the RFX reversed field pinch for time-resolved measurements of edge electron density and temperature. In order to allow an automatic analysis of the large number of current–voltage characteristics, three different methods have been developed, which consider restricted subsets of data with voltage lower than an upper cutoff value. The first one determines this limiting voltage by a neural network based technique, combined with criteria for the rejection of too noisy characteristics. In the second one a standard fitting routine is applied repeatedly to the data while varying the upper cutoff voltage. The third one consists of a numerical technique, where the best fit is obtained by minimizing a properly defined cost function. An error index is also calculated, which allows the reliability of the results to be easily estimated. The best results have been achieved using the last two methods.© 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The article presents the design and the first results of a new eight camera, soft x-ray (SXR) and bolometric tomography which has been installed in RFX, a large (R=2 m, a=0.46 m), high current reverse field pinch experiment operating in Padova. The main features of the diagnostic, which has been designed with standards compatible with the requirements of large fusion experiments, are: (a) it allows simultaneous reconstruction of both SXR and total radiation emissivity structures with high spatial and time resolution (bandwidth up to 200 kHz for SXR and 10 kHz for bolometry). Moreover, computer controlled remote actions which interchange up to five material filters in front of the detectors allow the exploration of different energy ranges; (b) it can be easily decoupled from the machine without breaking the main vacuum and can be operated during first wall baking up to 300 °C thanks to a cooling circuit; (c) the detection chain is designed to measure very low signals [in the order of 1 nA for SXR diodes and of 100 μV for bolometers]; (d) it is equipped with a VME based 1 MHz data acquisition system which allows on-line processing of a large amount of data. To accomplish these features the diagnostic consists of eight fully remotely controlled manipulators which can insert eight photocameras, carrying 78 top-rated Si SXR and 48 miniaturized metal film bolometric detectors in their operating positions. Initial results are presented. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: New analog signal conditioning electronics and data acquisition systems have been developed for the soft x-ray and bolometric tomography diagnostic in the reverse field pinch experiment (RFX). For the soft x-ray detectors the analog signal processing includes a fully differential current to voltage conversion, with up to a 200 kHz bandwidth. For the bolometers, a 50 kHz carrier frequency amplifier allows a maximum bandwidth of 10 kHz. In both cases the analog signals are digitized with a 1 MHz sampling rate close to the diagnostic and are transmitted via a transparent asynchronous xmitter/receiver interface (TAXI) link to purpose built Versa Module Europa (VME) modules which perform data acquisition. A software library has been developed for data preprocessing and tomographic reconstruction. It has been written in C language and is self-contained, i.e., no additional mathematical library is required. The package is therefore platform-free: in particular it can perform online analysis in a real-time application, such as continuous display and feedback, and is portable for long duration fusion or other physical experiments. Due to the modular organization of the library, new preprocessing and analysis modules can be easily integrated in the environment. This software is implemented in RFX over three different platforms: open VMS, digital Unix, and VME 68040 CPU. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract A methodological study on the use of neural networks for defect characterisation by means of a thermal method is presented. Neural networks are used here as defect classifiers, based on the infrared emission of the target object after heating. In this kind of application, there is a high degree of uncertainty in defect class boundaries due to several factors, such as the noise in the measurement, the uneven heating of the target object and the anisotropies in its thermal conductivity. For this reason, the classical ‘1 of N’ coding scheme during training did not provide satisfactory results. Much better results have instead been obtained using a smoother activation function for the output units during training. The non-destructive evaluation of material using neural networks proved extremely satisfactory, especially when compared to the classical procedures of thermographic analysis.

    Notes: Summary. The paper presents a new analysis method for a class of concurrent systems which are formed of several interacting components with the same structure. The model for these systems is composed of a control process and a set of homogeneous user processes. The control and user processes are modeled by finite labeled state transition systems which interact by means of enabling functions and triggering mechanisms. Based on this structure, an analysis method is presented which allows system properties, derived by reachability analysis for a finite number of user processes, to be generalized to an arbitrary number of user processes. A procedure for the automatic verification of properties such as mutual exclusion and absence of deadlocks is presented and is then used to provide for the first time a fully automated verification of the Lamport's fast mutual exclusion algorithm.
