Notes: Abstract The sterol composition of 23 species of coral-reef molluscs from Tahiti was investigated in relation to habitat and taxonomy. The elucidation of sterol components was performed by both argentation column and gas-liquid chromatographic techniques. Coral-reef molluscs, especially gastropods, seem to be characterised by sterols rich in 24-methylcholesterol.

Notes: summary In dental clinics, composite resin and cement cores are routinely cut and polished during abutment tooth preparation. To identify their characteristics during cutting, weight-load cutting tests were performed on eight commercial core composites and two cements, using diamond points driven by an air-turbine handpiece. It became evident that the cutting effectiveness of the diamond points on nine workpieces exceeded that on natural tooth dentine, while that on one composite containing Si3N4 filler was analogous to that on dentine. With continued use, the cutting effectiveness of the diamond point on all workpieces gradually declined. SEM observations revealed that diamond particles of the diamond point wore out with repeated use. It is clinically advised to select the core material with material characteristics during cutting and mechanical strength similar to those of dentin.

Notes: The purpose of this study was to evaluate dental high-speed cutting behaviour of four cast alloys, namely Ag-Pd-Cu-Au alloy, Ag-Zn-In-Sn alloy, Ni-Cr alloy and Ti. Weight-load cutting tests were conducted on four cast alloys, using two rotary cutting instruments, namely a diamond point and a carbide bur, both driven by an air-turbine handpiece. While the constant transverse load of 80g was applied on the workpiece for 5s, the handpiece speed was measured during cutting as well as the volume of workpiece removal which took place. The cutting tests were repeated 10 times. We found that the cutting volumes of soft Ag-Pd-Cu-Au alloy and Ag-Zn-In-Sn alloy were considerably larger than those of hard Ni-Cr alloy and Ti. It was also clarified that the cutting effectiveness of the carbide bur was generally superior to that of the diamond point. With continuing use, however, the cutting capability of the carbide bur tended to decline while that of the diamond point remained quasi-constant.

Notes: Abstract To produce radiopaque silica (SiO2)-based fillers, zirconia (ZrO2) powders were mechanically added to SiO2 powders with ZrO2 content up to 40 wt%. We evaluated the radiopacity of experimental composite resins consisting of (Bis-GMA + TEGDMA + CQ + DMAEMA) monomer mixture (25 wt%) and admixed SiO2−ZrO2 fillers (75 wt%), and compared their radiopacity with those of human dentin and enamel. It became confirmed that the radiopacity of experimental composite resins increased linearly with zirconium content, while the composite resin containing 80 wt% SiO2-20 wt% ZrO2 filler possessed radiopacity similar to that of human enamel. It was proved that the radiopacity of the composites could be precisely controlled by adjusting ZrO2 content in SiO2−ZrO2 fillers.
