    Notes: Abstract Selenium is an essential element which importance for human health is widely recognised. At present, Se status is assessed by either determination of total Se or glutathione peroxidase activity, but increasing attention is paid to the dosage of other Se species. From an analytical point of view, the presence of different Se species may influence even the determination of total Se. Most analytical techniques suffer from interferences and require control (CMs) and reference (RMs) materials for their validation. At present, the preparation of materials with different Se concentrations mainly relies on the addition of inorganic Se compounds to human or animal serum. However, the analytical behaviour of added inorganic Se may be different from that of native organic Se species, thus affecting the evaluation of method and laboratory performances. CMs at different Se concentrations were prepared without the addition of inorganic Se by pooling batches of serum with low and high Se content obtained from two different animal species (cow and horse) and used for two years in the Italian External Quality Assessment Scheme (EQAS) for trace elements in biological fluids. The results obtained in this EQAS are reported and compared with those obtained by the same laboratories on CMs spiked with inorganic Se. CMs prepared according to this protocol could be suitable for the assessment of methods for the speciation of Se in serum.

    Notes: Abstract The present study evaluated the effect of the selective and long-acting dopamine D1 receptor antagonist SCH 39166 on several aspects of the ingestive behaviour of genetically selected alcohol-preferring rats, bred from Sardinian alcohol-preferring rats. The effect of subchronic (8 days) subcutaneous drug administration was evaluated on the simultaneous daily intake of 10% ethanol, food and water. SCH 39166, 0.1 mg/kg, did not significantly modify the intake of the three ingesta. The dose of 1 mg/kg differentially modified rat ingestive behaviour, inhibiting intake of 10% ethanol, without modifying total fluid and food intake. The higher dose of 5 mg/kg produced a non-selective suppression of ingestive behaviour, which was accompanied by behavioural impairment. Acute drug injection was tested on 2-h intake of 10% sucrose, 0.1% saccharin, water or food. The doses of 0.1 and 1 mg/kg markedly inhibited the 2-h intake of 10% sucrose and 0.1% saccharin, but they did not modify either the 2-h water intake in water deprived and water sated rats or the 2-h food intake in food deprived rats. These findings suggest an important role of mechanisms mediated by D1 receptors in the control of alcohol and sweet solution intake, but not in water and food intake. Moreover, they indicate that SCH 39166, in relation to its selectivity and long-lasting activity, is an interesting pharmacological tool to investigate further the role of D1 receptor mechanisms in the control of ingestive behaviour.

    Notes: Abstract Gorgonian soft corals from the Caribbean Sea are known to contain prostaglandin-like compounds as well as other products of arachidonic acid lipoxygenation, and the formation of the latter has been suggested to represent the first step in prostaglandin biosynthesis. Here we present evidence for the presence of 11-R-hydroxy-5Z, 8Z, 12E, 14Z-eicosatetraenoic acid (11-R-HETE), as well as of the enzyme responsible for its biosynthesis, in the Caribbean gorgonianPlexaurella dichotoma. Lipid extracts fromP. dichotoma were purified by conventional SiO2 column chromatography followed by reversed phase high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). These yielded a component having chromatographic and spectroscopic properties identical to synthetic 11-HETE. Electron impact mass spectrometric analysis of the acetoxy-, methyl ester derivative of the compound confirmed its identity as 11-HETE, while chiral phase HPLC of the methyl ester derivative showed that the stereochemistry of the alcoholic carbon atom wasR. Enzymatically active homogenates fromP. dichotoma were able to convert both unlabelled and [3H] arachidonic acid into 11-HETE. In vitro biosynthesis of the latter metabolite was also observed with homogenates of the Mediterranean gorgonianParamuricea clavata, another non-prostaglandin-containing soft coral, thus suggesting that 11-R-HETE production is not necessarily accompanied by prostaglandin formation in gorgonian corals.

    Notes: Abstract Over a period of 13 years, 4100 specimens were cultured for fungi. Pityriasis versicolor (Malassezia furfur) was demonstrated in 17.6%, dermatophytosis in 34.6% and candidiasis in 10.8%. The most frequently isolated strains were M. canis (31.5%), T. rubrum (26.3%), E. floccosum (19.7%), T. mentagrophytes (19.3%) for the dermatophytes and C. albicans (88.9%). Those rarely seen were: M. gypseum, T. violaceum, M. audouini, T. schoenleinii. We observed the absolutely complementary results of the microscopic examinations and the cultures of the specimens.
