Notes: Abstract  We performed transcranial magnetic stimulation of the motor cortex in 22 left-handed and 25 right-handed subjects during active contraction of a small hand muscle. Motor evoked potentials had the same latency, amplitude and threshold on both sides of the body, whilst the silent period duration was shorter in the dominant hand. Silent periods elicited by nerve and brainstem stimulation were the same in both hands. Since the latter part of the cortical silent period is due mainly to withdrawal of corticospinal input to spinal motoneurones, we speculate that the results are compatible with the suggestion that tonic contractions of the non-dominant hand are associated with a greater involvement of the corticospinal tract than those of the dominant hand. It also seems likely that there is an asymmetry in the excitability of cortical inhibitory mechanisms with those responsible for the cortical silent period being less excitable in the dominant motor cortex.

Notes: Summary Forty-seven children with histologically confirmed medulloblastoma are considered. Forty-five cases were surgically treated by direct approach to the tumour, while two cases were treated only with a shunt. A shunt was inserted preoperatively in 14 cases, postoperatively in 4 cases. Surgical resection was total or subtotal in 52% of cases, partial in 35%, and limited to a biopsy in 13%. Radiation treatment to the entire neuraxis was done in 37 cases: 10 of these cases received additional chemotherapy—mostly with CCNU—as primary treatment for medulloblastoma. Ten patients died within 30 days after surgery. Twenty-two patients died months after treatment, mainly from tumour recurrence (19 cases). One patient was lost to follow-up. Thirteen patients are survivors from 10 months to 20 years after treatment. As a whole, the one year survival rate has been 67%, 3 year survival 43%, and 5 year survival 27%. Complications affecting prognosis have been presented by tumour recurrence and metastases. CSF shunting and lack of prophylactic irradiation to the cerebral hemispheres have been considered responsible for the high incidence of supratentorial metastases in our series. Factors influencing prognosis have been the extent of tumour resection and association of primary chemotherapy with radiotherapy. Within 3 years after surgery survival has been 52% in cases with total resection against 31% in cases with partial resection of tumour. As regards chemotherapy, 3 year survival has been 60% for patients with combined treatment (chemo- and radiotherapy) against 37% in patients with radiotherapy alone. It is concluded that the best results in children with medulloblastoma are achieved by a radical resection, associated with a combined primary treatment of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Notes: Abstract Superficial siderosis of the central nervous system is a rare condition characterized by deposition of haemosiderin in the leptomeninges and in the subpial layers of the brain and spinal cord. With the widespread use of magnetic resonance imaging, an increasing number of cases of superficial siderosis are being discovered, secondary forms being more frequent than idiopathic ones. We report a 78-year-old man in oral anticoagulant therapy, who presented neurosensory hearing loss, gait ataxia and spastic paraparesis. Magnetic resonance imaging suggested the diagnosis of superficial siderosis of the central nervous system, without an evident bleeding source.

Notes: Papillon-Lefevre syndrome is a rare disorder of keratinization inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. It is characterized by thickening of palms and soles, perindonlopathia, tendency to pyogenic skin infections and sometimes mental impairment. The authors report Papillon-Lefevre syndrome in two sisters in whom the familial pedigree shows the autosomal recessive inheritance of the trait. Two oilier important disorders of keratinization transmitted by an autosomal recessive gene. Richner-Hanhart syndrome and Mal de Meleda, are excluded by clinical and metabolic criteria. Systemic therapy with etretinate and acitretin could not be performed because one of the patients has a hepatopathy and the other refuses the treatment. Application of local keratolytics is giving quite good results.

Notes: Abstract Bioleaching of metallic sulphides withThiobacillus ferrooxidans in the absence of iron (II) was studied using pure sulphides and mixtures. The direct mode of bacterial action was analysed with respect to sulphide solubility, exposed solid surfaces and bacterial attachment to the solids. Bioleaching of mixed sulphides showed enhancement of metal extraction in comparison with pure sulphides which suggests metal extractions would be better from polymetallic sulphide ores than from similar matrices with only one sulphide.

Notes: Summary Bacterial leachings of sample of covellite using a strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in 9 K medium with and without iron were made at several pulp densities. Rates of solubilization with and without iron correspond to total and to direct mechanism respectively. Orders of reaction (at each pulp density) for each mechanism at two temperatures were calculated.

Notes: Summary High copper extraction by the action of Thiobacillus thiooxidans (T.t.) on covellite in presence of iron(III) is explained by indirect mechanism, in which T.t. only oxidizes the layer of sulphur that covers the sulphide surface allowing sulphide oxidation by iron(III). In cultures on elemental sulphur with iron(III) T.t. is not able to use iron(III) as an acceptor of electrons in sulphur oxidation; iron(III) only oxidizes those intermediates which were generated in the aerobic oxidation of sulphur.

Notes: Summary The behaviour of glass beads, silicagel and activated carbon particles as bacteria supports for using in backed bed bioreactor has been compared. No important difference was found. Additionally the performance of a bioreactor with glass beads was compared with that of a conventional percolating column in the bioleaching of a copper sulphide ore. Results showed higher copper extraction using the bioreactor.

Notes: Summary In the presence of iron, which is always associated with natural sulphide ores, the percentages of copper dissolution in the bioleaching of covellite were 34 and 45 % when Thiobacillus thiooxidans and Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were used together and when an indirect bioleaching with attached bacteria was performed respectively. In the latter, the percentage of copper dissolution was still higher than the percentages obtained with pure cultures (36 % with a T. thiooxidans culture and 40 % with a T. ferrooxidans culture).
