Notes: Summary The biogenesis of C19- and C21-steroids has been studied in tissue slices of a paraganglioma, of a pheochromocytoma and of human adrenal cortex using radioactive steroids. Slices of paraganglioma as well as of pheochromocytoma metabolise 17-hydroxyprogesterone to cortisone, cortisol, 11-deoxycortisol and testosterone. The rate of formation of these steroids, however, by the two tumours is 8–15 times less than that in normal adrenal cortex tissue. After incubation of dehydroepiandrosterone with tissue slices of paraganglioma and pheochromocytoma, 7α-hydroxydehydroepiandrosterone, 11β-hydroxy-4-androstene-3,17-dione and 4-androstene-3,17-dione were found as metabolites; testosterone was converted by both tissues to 4-androstene-3,17-dione. 17-Hydroxypregnenolone was converted to a small extent (1.7%) to dehydroepiandrosterone by slices of paranganglioma. These results show that enzymes of steroid biosynthesis (hydroxylases, oxidoreductases, δ4−5-isomerases, C17−20-desmolases) are present in both paraganglioma and pheochromocytoma.

Notes: Abstract A new class of finite translation planes called C-planes were constructed by Narayana Rao, Rodabaugh, Wilke and Zemmer from the exceptional near fields of Zassenhaus (Journal of Combinatorial Theory (A) 11, 72–92 (1972)). In this paper we determine the translation complement and its action on the set of ideal points of the C-plane corresponding to the C-system V-1. It is found that the translation complement is of order 5760 and it divides the ideal points into 3 orbits of lengths 2, 24 and 96.

Notes: Summary Altered dopamine turnover has been postulated as underlying cause for schizophrenia. This is partially inferred from pharmacological studies and from changes in serum dopamine and dopamine metabolite levels. It is not clear whether the serum amino acid precursors' availability and neurotransmitter-mediated hormonal release could be indicative of the neurotransmitter turnover. We speculate in this context that the profile of serum amino acids and neurotransmitters reflects differences of neurotransmitter activity in the central nervous system and may be considered in a broad sense “window to the brain”. We analyzed basal serum amino acids (including monoamine precursors), and monoamines in schizophrenic patients after a drug holiday of 3 or more days, and in healthy subjects. Asparagine, phenylalanine, and cystine were higher and tyrosine, tryptophan, and the ratio of tryptophan to competing amino acids lower in schizophrenic patients than in healthy subjects (P 〈 0.05). Dopamine was increased in schizophrenic patients compared to healthy subjects. We speculate that these results sustain the notion for dopamine overactivity in schizophrenia, which might be caused by altered amino acid precursor availability.

Notes: Abstract Two non desarguesian flag transitive planes of order 34 whose Kernel is GF(3) are constructed. These planes are distinct from the planes of the same order contained in the class constructed by Narayana Rao M. L. (Proceedings of American Mathematical Society 39 (1973) 51–56) and Ebert, G.L. and Baker, R. (Enumeration of two dimensional Flag-Transitive planes, Algebras, Groups and Geometries 3 (1985) 248–257). The Flag Transitive group modulo the scalar collineations of these planes is generated by two elements and is of order 328.

Notes: Abstract The potential importance of neuroleptic activity measures in the management of schizophrenia warrants attention to the methods for assessing neuroleptic bioactivity and stability of neuroleptic bioactivity over time. We have carried out measurements of serum neuroleptic and prolactin concentrations in 18 schizophrenic patients treated with haloperidol or thioridazine for up to 1 year. Serum neuroleptic levels were measurd by a radioreceptor assay using porcine striatum. The lower limit of sensitivity of the assay was 0.6 ng haloperidol/ml, the intra- and interassay coefficients of variation 3 and 9%, respectively. A linear correlation was observed between haloperidol dose (5–30 mg/d) and serum neuroleptic activity (r=0.706, P〈0.001) and a curvilinear relationship between thioridazine dose (50–600 mg/d) and serum neuroleptic activity in schizophrenic outpatients. There was a positive correlation between serum neuroleptic and prolactin concentrations for the patients taking haloperidol (r=0.620, P〈0.001) or thioridazine (r=0.542, P〈0.001). In patients taking a constant dose of haloperidol or thioridazine for up to 1 year serum neuroleptic activity remained stable, suggesting the absence of metabolic tolerance; the observation of a decrease of 38±16% (mean ± SD) in serum prolactin concentrations in patients treated with haloperidol but no prolactin decrease with thioridazine suggests that under certain neuroleptic treatment conditions a functional tolerance develops in the tuberoinfundibular dopamine system.

Notes: Summary Changes in the central and peripheral serotonergic receptor activity have been reported to be involved in depression and suicidality. To elucidate the interdependence between central and peripheral receptor sites and their regulation by serotonin, we estimated intra-individual serotonin2 receptor binging characteristics in porcine cortex synaptosomes and in platelet membranes using3H-LSD as ligand and ketanserin as competitor and quantified the relevant serotonin concentrations. A positive correlation between the apparent half maximal saturation concentration, KD, of the receptor in cortex synaptosomes and platelet membranes (r=0.65, p=0.0046, n=18), and between the apparent maximal binding capacity, Bmax, of the receptor in cortex synaptosomes and platelets (r=0.52, p=0.027, n=18) was observed. The blood serotonin concentrations correlated negatively with the maximal binding capacity, Bmax, in platelets (r=−0.77, p=0.0002, n=18). These results suggest that the binding characteristics of the central and peripheral serotonin2 receptor are similar, and that the platelet receptor activity may be regulated by blood levels of serotonin.
