    Notes: Breads in which water and milk powder were replaced with unrefined pork blood and/or cottage cheese whey were compared with commercial white bread and an “organic” whole wheat bread. Loaves were evaluated for appearance, composition and acceptance. Rat feeding studies in which the breads contributed about 10% protein to otherwise complete diets indicated no significant differences in growth performance (adjusted PER's) between commercial and “organic” bread. Significantly better performance was obtained for loaves containing blood, whey and blood: whey mixtures. The experimental loaves were comparable in acceptability to commercial breads, although loaf volumes were much lower and crumb texture coarser.

    Notes: Abstract: Cocaethylene is a pharmacologically active metabolite resulting from concurrent cocaine and ethanol consumption. The effects of cocaine and cocaethylene on extracellular levels of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens, and serotonin in the striatum were characterized in vivo in the anesthetized rat. Both intravenous (3 μmol/kg) and intraperitoneal (44 μmol/kg) routes of administration were used. In addition to monitoring neurotransmitter levels, microdialysate levels of cocaine and cocaethylene were determined at 4-min intervals after intravenous administration, and at 20-min intervals after intraperitoneal administration. Extracellular levels of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens were increased to ∼400% of preinjection value by both cocaine and cocaethylene when administered intravenously. Cocaine caused a significant increase of striatal serotonin to 200% preinjection value, whereas cocaethylene had no effect. Brain levels of cocaine and cocaethylene after intravenous administration did not differ. After intraperitoneal administration, extracellular levels of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens were increased to 400% of preinjection levels by cocaine, but were only increased to 200% of preinjection levels by cocaethylene, the difference being statistically significant. Serotonin levels were increased to 360% of preinjection levels by cocaine, but only to 175% of preinjection value by cocaethylene. Levels of cocaine attained in brain were significantly higher than those for cocaethylene, suggesting pharmacokinetic differences with the intraperitoneal route. These results confirm in vivo that cocaethylene is more selective in its actions than cocaine with respect to dopamine and serotonin uptake. In addition, route-dependent differences in attainment of brain drug levels have been observed that may impact on interpretations of the relative potency of the reinforcement value of these compounds.

    Notes: A high resolution reflectivity diffractometer (HRRD) has been recently commissioned on Station 2.3 at the SRS, Daresbury Laboratory. Using the instrument which is x-ray wavelength tunable, the characterization of the interface structure in an ion-assisted deposited Co/Cu multilayer has been carried out. In order to improve the electron density contrast of the sample, we have used an x-ray energy near the Cu K edge of 8.989 keV. By scanning the normal (specular), near normal (off specular), and parallel axes (transverse) of the surface, we have obtained useful reflectivity intensity data. By applying simulations to the data, we have determined a total roughness (rms) of 6.0±0.5 Å with a significant contribution from correlated interfacial roughness (4.2±0.2 Å). Other detailed structural information obtained has successfully demonstrated that the commissioned instrument is a viable tool for reflectivity studies. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have investigated the atomic structure and chemical bonding present at sulfur exposed GaAs(111)B-(2×2) surfaces using both scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and synchrotron radiation core-level photoemission. Exposure of the (2×2) surface to a molecular beam of sulfur leads to the appearance of a (1×1) low-energy electron diffraction pattern which becomes increasingly well defined as the sample is annealed. However, at no stage of the annealing process does the surface display an ordered (1×1) ideal termination. Both the photoemission data and STM images show that a large proportion of the As trimer units of the clean (2×2) surface remain after sulfur exposure and annealing to 450 °C with strong evidence of sulfur substituting for As in atomic layers below the surface. The effect of these reactions is to increase the surface band-bending from that of the clean (2×2) surface. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

White crappies, Pomoxis annularis Rafinesque, were collected from two Texas reservoirs during pre-spawn, post-spawn, and autumn periods to evaluate seasonal relationships of relative weight (Wr) to body composition. Seasonal variations in Wr corresponded to cycles of lipid as a percentage of body weight. Lipid content and liver weight as percentages of total body weight of crappies from a population where individuals had high Wr values were consistently higher than corresponding values for crappies from a population where individuals had low Wr values. During autumn, lipid content, and liver and gonad tissue as percentages of body weight were positively correlated with Wr, and moisture and protein were inversely related to Wr. Percentage of mature eggs was positively correlated to Wr in pre-spawn crappies.

    Notes: Abstract. We describe a rapid, non-destructive method for determining lean body mass (LBM; i.e. total body mass — total lipid mass) and lipid content in live fish. This method provides non-invasive determination of body composition by measuring the total body electrical conductivity (TOBEC) of an animal placed within a low-frequency electromagnetic field. This principle is governed by the different electrical properties of body fat and fat-free tissues. Relationships between TOBEC analysis and body composition were examined using juvenile sunshine bass (hybrid striped bass, Morone chrysops (Rafinesque) ♀×M. saxatilis (Walbaum) ♂) in a size range of 24–124g. Whole-body conductivity was significantly correlated to LBM, lipid, protein, water, and ash content. Analyses of an independent group of fish indicated TOBEC to be a reliable indicator of body composition. This method should prove useful for deriving body composition data at various phases of an experiment or a life cycle, rather than a single point in time as with destructive methods.
