Notes: Abstract To investigate the changes in the 1α, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2D] level and the role of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and calcitonin (CT) during the early neonatal periods, we measure 1,25(OH)2D, 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], PTH specific for mid-regions (mPTH) and urinary cAMP (UcAMP) to evaluate the renal tubular responsiveness to intrinsic PTH and CT, as well as serum Ca and P in 28 mothers at term delivery and in their babies at birth and 5 days of age. Cord serum 1,25(OH)2D levels were low (28.8 ±9.2 pg/ml, means ±SD), while maternal serum 1,25(OH)2D levels were high (62.2±22.6 pg/ml). The low 1,25(OH)2D value increased 2.5 times (62.2±22.6 pg/ml) in 5-day-old infants, reaching a high normal adult value, concomitant with the increases in mPTH and urinary cAMP/creatinine ratio (UcAMP/Cr). The correlations between 1,25(OH)2D and UcAMP/Cr, and 1,25(OH)2D and mPTH in all paired samples of babies at birth and at 5 days of age were r=0.456, n=50, P〈0.01 and r=0.341, n=50, P〈0.05, respectively. These data suggest that the parathyroid activation after birth is a major factor in the rapid 1,25(OH)2D increment at that time. CT levels were high in all paired samples and in 5-day-old infants. CT vs 1,25(OH)2D showed a significant correlation (r=0.473, P〈0.05, n=24) as well as the relative increase of 1,25(OH)2D (Δpg/ml) after birth vs CT at age 5 days (r=0.537, P〈0.01, n=24). In the infants with low CT levels at 5 days the 1,25(OH)2D concentration failed to increase. These results suggest CT, in addition to PTH, may be important in the postnatal increase 1,25(OH)2 in term infants, though further direct evidence of the role of CT is necessary.

Notes: Abstract A 5-year-old male patient with asymptomatic optic neuritis and mumps postinfectious encephalitis or acute disseminated encephalomyelitis is reported. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with a short inversion time inversion recovery sequence was valuable in detecting clinically silent lesions of the unilateral right optic nerve in addition to visual evoked potentials. Evidence of concurrent optic neuritis was useful for detecting more extensive neurological involvement, leading to the diagnosis of mumps postinfectious encephalitis. A systmatic MRI study should be performed in children with mumps encephalitis, regardless of appreciable clinical deficits.

Notes: Abstract. We report a 4-year-old girl diagnosed as having Guillain-Barré syndrome after infection by Penner serotype 19 of Campylobacter jejuni. The patient had the HLA-B35 antigen. Neurological examination revealed distal-dominant weakness and intact sensation. Serial electrophysiological studies indicated that the predominant process was axonal degeneration involving motor nerves. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay revealed the presence of high titres of serum IgM antibodies to gangliosides GM1 and GM2. The IgM auto-antibody titres decreased concurrently with the clinical course of the illness and no switching from IgM to IgG secretion took place.

Notes: Abstract Objective: Urinary 6β-hydroxycortisol/cortisol (6β-OHF/C) ratio was measured in human neonates to assess the CYP3A enzyme activity. Methods: Urinary 6β-OHF/C ratio was determined on the day of birth in 94 neonates including those born prematurely. In addition, changes in the ratios after birth were also determined in 81 neonates. Results: On the day of birth, a significant positive correlation was found between urinary 6β-OHF/C ratios and gestational age (r=0.476) and birth weight (r=0.283). There was no gender difference in the urinary 6β-OHF/C ratios in human neonates. Furthermore, delivery modes such as cesarean section and vaginal delivery did not appear to affect the urinary 6β-OHF/C ratio. The mean ratio of urinary 6β-OHF/C observed in 39 mature neonates (more than 37 weeks of gestational age) was higher than that observed in adults (16.5 vs 9.9). Within 5 days after birth, the ratio rapidly decreased to less than that in adults. In contrast, the mean ratio of urinary 6β-OHF/C observed in 42 premature neonates (under 37 weeks of gestational age) was significantly lower than that observed in mature neonates (5.3 vs 16.5) and was virtually unchanged during the 14-days after birth. Therefore, no significant difference was observed in the mean ratio of urinary 6β-OHF/C between mature and premature neonates at 5 days after birth. Conclusion: From these results, it was concluded that on the day of birth, mature neonates might possess a higher activity of CYP3A enzyme compared with premature neonates, and that the CYP3A enzyme activity in mature neonates might be promptly changed at an early stage after birth.

Notes: Summary A surgical procedure to expose the arterial bifurcation at the base of the rat brain was developed without sacrificing the animal. Using this technique, visualization of flow in and around the induced cerebral aneurysm was achieved by detecting and following fluorescent particles in the blood stream. Cerebral aneurysms were produced by ligating one common carotid artery, inducing experimental hypertension and feeding them with beta-aminopropionitrile. Flow studies of the arterial bifurcation with an early aneurysmal formation showed that there were spiral flows proximal and distal to the bifurcation. This was the first direct visualization of the actual flow in and around cerebral aneurysms in a vital state. This technology can add further information on the development, growth and rupture of cerebral aneurysms.

Notes: Direct and Fowler–Nordheim tunneling currents through oxide and dual layer silicon oxide–silicon nitride dielectrics are investigated for substrate and gate injection. The calculations include depletion effects in the heavily doped (n+) polysilicon gate electrodes as well as quantization effects in the less heavily doped n-type substrates. The Wentzel–Kramers–Brillouin (WKB) effective mass approximation has been compared with exact calculations for the tunneling probability, and based on these comparisons it has been found that the WKB approximation is adequate for single layer dielectrics, but is not for the dual layer dielectrics that are the focus of this article. Using exact tunneling transmission calculations, current-voltage (I–V) characteristics for ultrathin single layer oxides with different thicknesses (1.4, 2.0, and 2.3 nm) have been shown to agree well with recently reported experiments. Extensions of this approach demonstrate that direct tunneling currents in oxide/nitride structures with oxide equivalent thickness of 1.5 and 2.0 nm can be significantly lower than through single layer oxides of the same respective thickness. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Nitrogen has been incorporated selectively at the top surface of a conventional thermal gate oxide by nitridation with a remote He–N2 plasma at low temperatures, 23 and 300 °C. On-line Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) has been used to characterize the process. A peak shift in the Si-LVV feature establishes that the nitrogen is bonded to the silicon. The concentration of nitrogen can be varied by a combination of substrate temperature and duration of plasma exposure. Ex situ glancing-angle x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) confirm that the nitrogen is confined to the immediate vicinity of the surface. Rapid thermal annealing (RTA) of the nitrided oxide at 900 °C in N2 and N2O does not change the N content. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
