Notes: Midinfrared InAs-based and GaSb-based semiconductor lasers with wavelengths from 3.3 to 4 μm have been used in a grating-tuned external cavity configuration. At 80 K, a tuning range up to ∼8% of the center wavelength has been obtained. Power of 0.2 W peak, 20 mW average has been demonstrated for multimode operation with ∼1–2 nm linewidth. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary In this paper we have studied the behaviour of PMMA in the binary mixture CCl4/n-butyl chloride by viscometry, light scattering and dyalisis. We have found that the CCl4/n-butyl chloride mixture behaves as cosolvent in the range 10 〈 u2 〈 90% n-butyl chloride. The n-butyl chloride is preferentially adsorbed in the whole composition range. The obtained results are discussed attending to GE and the liquid order.

Notes: Summary We have studied the PMMA viscometric behaviour in the polar binary mixture THF(1)/water(2). The results obtained point out that this mixture presents a synergistic effect in the composition interval 0 〈 u2〈12% (w/w) water. We have found also a sharp variation of the PMMA unperturbed dimensions, kΘ, which can be due to a conformational change. Starting from the evaluation of the intermolecular interaction parameter, B, and the Mark-Houwink-Sakurada exponent, the theta composition of the system has been determined.

Notes: Abstract Glyoxylic acid is an important intermediate in organic synthesis. Its production by electroreduction of oxalic acid is very well known. However, attempts to scale up the process have failed due to rapid deactivation of the cathode. In this paper a process for overcoming this problem is described. The cathode activity can be continuously restored by adding small amounts of a Pb(II) salt in both anolyte and catholyte. In this way, the process has been continuously run for more than 300 h with a current efficiency of 92% and a selectivity higher than 95%.

Notes: Conclusions Indirect electrosynthesis of 2-osuloses from aldopentoses and ketohexoses has shown to be an interesting tool for reducing the amount of chemical oxidant (copper (II) involved in the reaction. However, the experimental conditions under which the reaction is carried out are far from those industrially acceptable. Nevertheless, the potential advantages of the electrolytic method, as well as its interest in organic synthesis, are so important that further effort should be spent in studying this procedure.

Notes: Abstract The electrosynthesis of iminodiacetic acid by electrooxidation of nitrilotriacetic acid in undivided cells has been studied using Zn, Cu, PbO2, DSA®O2, DSA®Cl2, C, Ni and porous carbon as anodes. Results show that the synthesis is possible in both acid and basic mediums. The best results were obtained in aqueous 40% w/w sulphuric acid with porous carbon RVC-4000 as anode and SUS 316 as cathode, at 60 °C, 400 mA cm-2 and charge 95% of theoretical. Under these conditions, nitrilotriacetic acid conversion was 92%, current efficiency 80% and selectivity 85%. Loss of selectivity was due to chemical side reaction between iminodiacetic acid and HCHO electrogenerated in the electrolysis.
