Summary The urinary excretion of the serotonin metabolite, 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid, has been studied in a control group and in patients with diseases of the haematopoietic and reticuloendothelial system. Some individual cases with various blood diseases had lowered 5-HIA level; possible reasons for this are discussed. There is no relationship between the serotonin level of the blood and the level of hydroxyindole excreted in the urine. The decreased 5-hydroxytryptamine concentration in blood platelets, which is regularly found in some blood diseases, is due entirely to a decreased amine binding by the thrombocytes.

Zusammenfassung Die Ausscheidung des Serotonin-Metaboliten 5-Hydroxyindolessigsäure im Harn wurde bei einem Vergleichskollektiv sowie bei Fällen mit Erkrankungen des hämatopoetischen und retikuloendothelialen Systems untersucht. Bei einzelnen Fällen mit verschiedenen Blutkrankheiten fanden sich verminderte 5-HIE-Werte; die möglichen Ursachen werden diskutiert. Zwischen dem Serotoningehalt des Blutes und der Hydroxyindolessigsäure-Exkretion im Harn bestehen keine Beziehungen. Die Verminderung der 5-Hydroxytryptamin-Konzentration der Blutplättchen, die sich bei einzelnen Blutkrankheiten regelmäßig nachweisen läßt ist ausschließlich eine Folge der verminderten Aminbindung der Thrombozyten.
