    Notes: Abstract. Ambiguity decorrelation is a useful technique for rapid integer ambiguity fixing. It plays an important role in the least-squares ambiguity decorrelation adjustment (Lambda) method. An approach to multi-dimension ambiguity decorrelation is proposed by the introduction of a new concept: united ambiguity decorrelation. It is found that united ambiguity decorrelation can provide a rapid and effective route to ambiguity decorrelation. An approach to united ambiguity decorrelation, the HL process, is described in detail. The HL process performs very well in high-dimension ambiguity decorrelation tests.

    Notes: The Schottky behavior of Ni/Ta and Ni contacts on n-GaN was investigated under various annealing conditions by current–voltage measurements. It is found that with the addition of Ta between the Ni layer and the GaN substrate the thermal stability properties of devices can be significantly improved. Experimental results indicate that a high quality Ni/Ta n-GaN Schottky diode with an ideality factor and barrier height of 1.16 and 1.24 eV, respectively, can be obtained under 1 h annealing, at 700 °C. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The isoelectronic In-doping effect in GaN films grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition was investigated by using Raman scattering, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and x-ray and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. In our study, the phonon spectra of films remain sharp without alloy formation after incorporation of small amounts of In atoms. The SEM pictures of the sample surface reveal greatly reduced nanopits indicating better surface flatness that is also supported by the multiple interference effect in the PL signals. More importantly, isoelectronic doping has caused the linewidth at 15 K of the near-band-edge emission of GaN to decrease sharply to 10 meV or less, reflecting improved optical property. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract A formulation that finds the optimal design of a controlled structure is proposed. To achieve this goal, a composite objective composed of structural and control objectives is introduced to be optimized, and the effect of the control weighting is examined. A feedback control law is defined before the structural optimization and then the composite objective will only become a function of structural design variables. As a result, optimal structural design and control forces in steady state are obtained.

    Notes: Summary One hundred families of average size 10 are allocated in single-tree plots to 20 blocks in several planned unbalanced designs. Based on the variance of the estimate of heritability from the Minimum Variance Quadratic Unbiased Estimates and 100% survival, the three partially balanced designs are equally efficient. A design with variable family size is more efficient for heritabilities (h2) generally less than 0.25; an equal family size design is more efficient for h2 generally greater than 0.25. A design with a large number of small families is more efficient at high h2 than that with a small number of large families; a design with fewer families of larger size is more efficient at low h2. Two-tree plot designs are never more efficient than single-tree plot designs and are also shown to be sensitive to the magnitude of the variance components that generate a given h2, whereas the single-tree plot designs are not.

    Notes: Summary Both of hepatitis B virus core protein and a precore protein derivative, named P22, have been shown to localize in the nucleus. Although P22 has ten additional amino acid residues at its amino-terminus, both proteins contain the same nuclear localization signal. In order to understand the mechanism that regulates the activity of this signal, we have studied the nuclear localization of P22 and compared it with that of core protein. It was found that both cytosolic and nuclear fractions of P22 were phosphorylated but to a lesser extent when compared with cytosolic core protein. This distinction was likely attributed to different conformations between these two proteins since the density gradient analysis revealed a different particle formation for P22 in the cytosol. When expressed in Vero cells synchronized by serum deprivation, P22 remained in the cytosol during G0 and G1 phases, accumulated gradually in the nucleus during S phase, and largely localized in the nucleus when cells were confluent. On the other hand, the core protein was transported into the nucleus during mid-G1 phase, shuttled back to the cytosol in S phase and again accumulated in the nucleus when cells were confluent. Interestingly, when aphidicolin was used to arrest the cells in late G1 phase, both proteins were found to accumulate in the nuclei. These results indicated that although both P22 and core proteins possessed the same nuclear localization signal, the cellular regulation of their nuclear transport was not identical and might involve different molecular mechanisms.

    Notes: Abstract The analytical solution to Graetz problem with uniform wall heat flux is extended by including the viscous dissipation effect in the analysis. The analytical solution obtained reduces to that of Siegel, Sparrow and Hallman neglecting viscous dissipation as a limiting case. The sample developing temperature profiles, wall and bulk temperature distributions and the local Nusselt number variations are presented to illustrate the viscous dissipation effects. It is found that the role of viscous dissipation on thermal entrance region heat transfer is completely different for heating and cooling at wall. In the case of cooling at wall, a critical value of Brinkman number, Br c=−11/24, exists beyond which (−11/24〈Br〈0) the fluid bulk temperature will always be less than the uniform entrance temperature indicating the predominance of cooling effect over the viscous heating effect. On the other hand, with Br 〈 Br c the bulk temperature T b will approach the wall temperature T w at some downstream position and from there onward the bulk temperature T b becomes less than the wall temperature T w with T w 〉 B b 〉 T 0 indicating overall heating effect for the fluid. The numerical results for the case of cooling at wall Br 〈 0 are believed to be of some interest in the design of the proposed artctic oil pipeline.
