Notes: The 23Na quadrupole coupling constants (QCC) were calculated for a quasicrystalline model of the neat phase of anhydrous amphiphiles. The magnitude of the QCC in short-chain sodium alkanoates and its dependence on the lateral packing area of the polar heads was accurately predicted by assuming the charges to lie in a double-layered square array of interdigitated ion pairs.

Notes: Patients who smoke cigarettes suffer increased postoperative morbidity. A prospective, controlled trial was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of written pre-operative advice to stop smoking before admission for elective surgery and to record the duration of abstinence immediately before the operation. Although the advice was ineffective in persuading patients to stop smoking, it was associated with a reduction in the amount of tobacco consumed. Nicotine and carbon monoxide have important short-term adverse effects but 15% of all patients continued to smoke within an hour of surgery. If patients are unable to give up cigarette smoking completely, it is still worthwhile stopping on admission to hospital.

Notes: Deuterium NMR spectra and spin-lattice relaxation times T1 were obtained as functions of temperature for α-deuterated sodium n-alkanoates (nc=4–7) in the smectic A and "isotropic'' liquid phases. The temperature dependence of the orientational order parameter is found to disagree with the predictions of McMillan's and Woo's theories for the smectic A phase. Reorientational models are presented to explain the experimental order parameters in terms of the structure of the anhydrous solid or the lyotropic gel phase of these compounds. The same models are used in the analysis of reorientational contributions to the 2D T1 in the mesophase; order director fluctuations are also estimated to contribute significantly to the relaxation times. The 2D T1 temperature dependence in the mesophase resembles that of the 23Na T1 measured previously, implying shared relaxation mechanisms for the two nuclei. Estimated correlation times for 2D relaxation in the isotropic phase provide evidence for the persistence of local structure characterized by motion on a time scale of tens of picoseconds.

Notes: Abstract Earwigs (Forficula auricularia L.) were collected from an untreated apple orchard every 2 weeks from June to October 1979. Percentage parasitism at the times of collection was calculated from the numbers of parasitoids that emerged. Two tachinidsRhacodineura pallipes Fallen andDigonochaeta spinipennis Meigen parasitised earwigs, starting between 21 June and 5 July and continuing through July. Parasitism byR. pallipes reached a peak of 16 % in late July; fewer earwigs were parasitised byD. spinipennis. Both tachinids had one generation per year;D. spinipennis overwintered as puparia, andR. pallipes as larvae in earwig hosts or as adults. In the orchard, puparia of both tachinid species were hyperparasitised byDibrachys cavus (Walker) (Pteromalidae) andPhygadeuon vexator (Thunberg) (Ichneumonidae).

Notes: Abstract LY178002 (5-[3,5-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-4-hydroxyphenyl]methylene-4-thiazolidinone) and its N-methyl analog, LY256548, inhibit the enzymatic activity of phospholipase A2, 5-lipoxygenase and fatty acid cycloxygenase. They also inhibit leukotriene B4 production from human polymorphonuclear leukocytes stimulated with the calcium ionophore A23187. Since products of the arachidonic acid cascade have been implicated as important mediators in a variety of inflammatory diseases including arthritis, LY178002 and LY256548 were studied in the Freund's Complete Adjuvant-Induced Arthritis (FCA) model in rats. The compounds were administered orally and inhibition of bone damage and paw swelling was assessed of both the injected and uninjected paws. At 50 mg/kg LY178002 inhibited soft tissue swelling in the uninjected paw by 81% while LY256548 exhibited 57% inhibition. Bone damage was also significantly inhibited by both compounds. A dose response was conducted. The minimum effective dose for LY178002 was 10 mg/kg p.o. In the established FCA model LY178002 at 50 mg/kg p.o. inhibited the uninjected paw swelling by 75% while LY256548 did not show this level of activity. These results suggest that LY178002 and LY256548 may be useful in the treatment of arthritis.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Mischkulturen oder Streifenkulturen verschiedener Pflanzenarten oder-sorten sind in vielen Ländern üblich. Brassica/Tomaten 2. Phaseolus/Unkräuter 3. Brassica mit Einsaat.
Notes: Abstract Mixed- or inter-cropping of plant species and cultivars is a common cultural practice in many countries and amongst its potential advantages are effects on the population dynamics of pests which may minimise crop damage. This paper outlines some of these effects in relation to initial colonisation of crops and the feeding, reproduction, mortality and dispersal of pests within the crop. Ways in which the chemical or physical features of mixed cropping which confer advantages in pest control can be transferred to agronomically acceptable monocultures are discussed with reference to (1)Brassica/tomato, (2)Phaseolus/weed grass and (3) undersownBrassica systems.
