Notes: Homozygous DW typing cells were tested for six B-lymphocyte specificities. All four of the second locus specificities of B lymphocytes were strongly associated with the DW specificities. DW1 typing cells were B group 6, DW2 were B4, DW3 were B5, and LD107 were B3. The first B-cell locus antigens 1 and 2 tended to be uniform within the DW groups. From an analysis of the typing responses of a panel of cells to the homozygous typing cells, it has become apparent that the first B-locus specificity present on the homozygous typing cells also plays a role in determining whether a typing response is obtained or not. Thus, the DW3 typing cells were themselves B2 and B5, and cells having B2-B5 were most frequently nonreactive to DW3 in mixed lymphocyte culture. Homozygous typing cells therefore mainly detect the second B-cell locus antigens and, to a lesser degree, the first locus specificities. Stated another way, homozygous typing cells do not define a single specificity, but rather the presence of two B-lymphocyte specificities, even though their responses often reflect matching of only the second B-locus specificity.

Notes: Abstract WE report the MRI findings in two patients with presumed cervical spinal cord infarcts in the anterior spinal artery territory. MRI revealed abnormal signal intensities and/or band-like enhancement in the anterior two-thirds of the cervical spinal cord, corresponding to the vascular territory of the anterior spinal artery. Clinically there was an anterior spinal cord syndrome.

Notes: Abstract A cDNA library was constructed using mRNA prepared from leaves of watermelon [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum&Nakai] at the vegetative stage. Randomly selected cDNA clones were sequenced in order to identify potentially informative genes. Database comparisons indicated that out of the 704 watermelon cDNA clones, 399 clones (56.7 %) revealed a high degree of sequence similarity to genes from other organisms. These expressed sequence tag clones were divided into ten categories depending upon gene function. Since this kind of experiment has not previously been carried out in this genome, random nucleotide sequencing of these cDNAs could contribute considerable information concerning the novel genes in this organism.

Notes: Plasma polymerization of 1,3-ditrifluoromethylbenzene (DTFMB)/CF4 mixture was investigated by means of elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy and the permeation properties of the formed plasma polymer films were examined. The plasma polymerization deposited films containing fluorine atoms, of which the concentration depended on the starting composition of the DTFMB/CF4 mixture. The films were composed of fluorinated alkyl moieties with a small amount of fluorinated aromatic moieties and carbonyl moieties. The CF4 addition to DTFMB caused the breaking down of aromatic rings. Permeation properties of the plasma polymer films depended on the starting composition of the DTFMB/CF4 mixture, the discharge current, and the thickness of the deposited films. The permselectivity was enhanced by adding CF4 and increasing the discharge current. Plasma polymer films prepared from DTFMB/CF4 mixture containing 75 mol % CF4 at a discharge current of 150 mA had a permselectivity of 5.0 and an oxygen permeation coefficient of 3.5×10-10 cm3 (STP) cm/cm2 s cm Hg.

Notes: A three-dimensional elastoplastic beam element being capable of incorporating large displacement and large rotation is developed and examined. Elastoplastic constitutive equations are applied to the beam element based upon the assumption of small deformational strain leading to a material formulation which is completely objective for the application of stress update procedures. The continuum-type equations of plastic model of J2 mixed hardening are transformed into the beam equations by satisfying beam hypotheses. An effective stress update algorithm is proposed to integrate elastoplastic rate equations by means of the so-called multistep method which is a method of successive control of residuals on yield surfaces. It avoids severe divergence when the displacement increments become large which is usual for the continuation methods. Material tangent stiffness matrix is derived by using consistent elastoplastic modulus resulting from the integration algorithm and is combined with geometric tangent stiffness matrix. Different from other elements, the present element is shear flexible and can satisfy the plasticity condition in a pointwise fashion. A great number of numerical examples are analysed and compared with the literature. The proposed beam element is verified to be not only quite accurate but also very effective for the analyses of pre-buckling and large deflection collapse of spatial framed structures.
