Notes: Abstract There is increasing evidence that the genetic predisposition for schizophrenia in families affects more individuals than those fulfilling the criteria for schizophrenia. This finding is supposed to be one of the major problems in molecular genetic schizophrenia research, especially when linkage studies are employed. Eye-tracking dysfunction (ETD), which is conceived as a possible phenotypic marker for genetic liability to schizophrenia, may offer considerable advantages. However, there is only little information from families with multiple occurrence of schizophrenia. It is still unclear whether in these families ETD aggregates with diagnoses from the schizophrenia spectrum. This first report from an ongoing study presents the results of 48 individuals from 6 multiplex families. Smooth-pursuit eye movements were recorded by infrared reflectometry and assessed by quantitative measurement techniques. Along with the high degree of psychiatric morbidity in these families, in 56.3% of the individuals ETD was assessed. Reduced mean pursuit gain was present in 39.6%. The distribution of eye-tracking dysfunction resembles the distribution of schizophrenia-related psychiatry morbidity.

Notes: Summary The prerequisites for simulating the charge transport by MONTE CARLO methods are summarized and tested by experiment with PE. For this simulation calculations space charges have to be considered, particularly in interpreting the long-time kinetics. For them MONTE CARLO methods were found to be insufficient. In investigating the long-time kinetics by surface potential measurements deviations from the dispersive behaviour were observed.

Notes: Abstract The nonlinear surface susceptibility χ S (2) is generally referred to the system of Cartesian coordinates of thesample. However, since actual measurements take place with respect to thelaboratory system of coordinates, appropriate transformation of χ S (2) is necessary to deduce the underlying susceptibility-components. We demonstrate this by analyzing the second-harmonic signal generated by an inclined sample upon rotation around thes-axis of the laboratory system of coordinates. The sample consists of two Langmuir-Blodgett-type monolayers of rotational symmetry around the sample normal, the two layers being separated by a plane-parallel flat of 1 mm thickness. The occurrence of a “symmetry-forbidden”I SS 2ω -signal is discussed in detail.

Notes: Abstract We consider surface second-harmonic (SH) generation in terms of both a phenomenological description and a microscopical model. As sample serve Langmuir-Blodgett-type monolayers of perfect rotational symmetry around the surface normal. Their second-order susceptibility was determined with high precision by evaluation of the angle-of-incidence dependence in Fresnel reflection and in total internal reflection. The appropriate microscopical model requires embedding of the polarization sheet responsible for SH emission into a uniform medium of permittivity ɛm(ω) and ɛm(2ω) with ɛm(ω)/ɛm(2ω)≠1. The implications for the derivation of molecular average tilt angles from susceptibility ratios are also discussed.

Notes: Abstract The ‘inverted’ retina of the human eye can beemulated by multilayer gratings from polymer latexparticles located in the image plane of opticalsystems. This so called OPTO-RETINA provides v. Laueinterference patterns in visible light with atrichromatic characteristic containing, simultaneously, local spatiotemporal direction anddistance information, which are relevant to 3Dspatial vision and 4D spatiotemporal Fouriercorrelator-optical preprocessing in shape andmotion analysis. As a first step in the realization of OPTO-RETINAproperties the formation of hexagonally orderedmonolayers of polystyrene latex sphereswith diameters in the~μm range is reported and firstresults of diffraction and dispersion of white lightby these layers obtained by conoscopical opticalmicroscopy are presented.

Notes: Abstract We have studied the coherent superposition of nonlinear optical signals due to the substrate background and an organic surface layer deposited on this substrate by second-harmonic generation (SHG). The increased sensitivity of the total reflection geometry used permits identification of subtle details of this superposition; for example partial cancellation of the phase-reversed SH-signals or the observation of a coverage-density-dependent tilt angle of the organic chromophores. The second-harmonic signals from the Langmuir-Blodgett-type monolayers exceed the SH-response of the adsorbates prepared by simple wetting with chloroform solutions of the same amphiphilic dyes by two orders of magnitude under identical coverage-density conditions.

Notes: Abstract Using optical second-harmonic generation, we have measured the anisotropic orientation behavior of liquid crystal (LC) molecules in thin films. A high degree of in-plane anisotropy was obtained by depositing the LC films onto rubbed polyimide-covered substrates. The analysis with respect to the relevant second-order susceptibility tensor components is based upon the experimental results obtained in transmission geometry using different angles of incidence for the separation of isotropic and anisotropic contributions.
