Description / Table of Contents: Summary Changes in the activity of the alkaline leukocyte phosphatase (ALP) in female rats after application of thyrotropin alone and in combination with estradiol benzoate as well as of PMS and HCG were determined according to the azocoupling method ofMerker in the modification ofBauer-Sic. The animals were ovariectomised or ovariectomised and hysterectomised or not operated. The application of thyrotropic hormones effected an increase in activity of the ALP depending on the dosage. The application of thyrotrophin together with estradiol benzoate lead to a distinct increase of activity, wich is considered to be the exclusive effect of the estradiol benzoate. PMS and HCG effected the ALP only by stimulation of the ovaries and were ineffective in ovariectomised animals.

Notes: Novel microstructures manufactured with high precision and reproducibility are proposed for high-resolution collimators in flat crystal soft x-ray monochromators for plasma spectroscopy. The newly developed technique for this type of collimator is based on surface structuring of foils using profiled microdiamonds. Results of x-ray tests of a microstructure collimator demonstrate that the predicted angular resolution of 5000 at a transmission of about 0.3 can be obtained.

Notes: Local measurements of plasma radiation in the near infrared using the detection system of the ASDEX Thomson scattering device are reported. Comparison with hydrogen bremsstrahlung yields Zeff profiles. Good agreement with values from other diagnostics is obtained. Zeff behavior in a variety of ASDEX discharges is discussed.

Notes: The application of 180° Thomson scattering to the JET tokamak for measuring electron temperature and density profiles is discussed. Spatial resolution along the laser beam is achieved by the use of subnanosecond laser pulses and high-speed detection allowing time-of-flight measurements. Gating tests of MCP photomultiplier and measurements of the stray light level in a full-scale optical setup show that the severe stray light problem in a backscatter geometry can be handled. Tests of a frequency-doubled iodine laser system are reported which demonstrate that a 1-pps operation of the system is feasible.

Notes: The Thomson scattering system of the ASDEX upgrade (AUG) tokamak is described. One of the main objectives of AUG is to investigate plasma wall interaction in reactor relevant discharges with a magnetic divertor. The very successful Nd:YAG scattering system developed for its predecessor ASDEX, has been upgraded to give higher spatial and temporal resolution, reliability, and flexibility to different discharge conditions. The system consists of two independently operating devices, each using a cluster of six lasers: One measures the electron temperature and density along three possible vertical chords alternatively through the magnetic axis, or the inner or outer boundary layer; a second chord in the equatorial plane will always cover the magnetic center even in the case of considerable Shafranov shifts. An additional compact spectrometer has been designed for measurements with high radial resolution in the equatorial plane across the separatrix. A third system, using the laser beams for the vertical arrangement once again, has been designed for profile measurements in the energy deposition zone 2 cm above the outer divertor plate. Each laser is run at a repetition rate of 20 Hz and 1 J per pulse. A variety of synchronization modes are available, e.g., 20 Hz/6 J, 120 Hz/1 J etc., or repetitive bursts at 20 Hz. In this case the minimum delay between two pulses is presently limited to ≈30 μs by the existing data acquisition. This mode will be used for investigating fast phenomena such as sawteeth or disruptive instabilities. During the time intervals between the laser pulses the bremsstrahlung radiation (line integral) will be measured by the Thomson scattering detection system to calculate Zeff.

Notes: In the ASDEX Thomson scattering system the scattered light of a Nd:YAG laser beam (λ=1064 nm) is measured to obtain electron density and temperature profiles every 16 ms. The same system is continuously used to measure bremsstrahlung in the near infrared, allowing determination of radial Zeff profiles. Some characteristic examples of radiation and Zeff profiles are given. The time resolution of the detection system (≤50 kHz) is sufficiently high to observe fast MHD phenomena such as sawtooth instabilities around the q=1 surface and density fluctuations in the plasma edge. Furthermore, the diagnostic can also be used for real time control of the electron density. This applies in particular in cases where large sawteeth and pellet injection generate counting errors in the interferometer signal. The relation between the line density n and the central chord bremsstrahlung signal Ub was investigated for different heating scenarios in a wide density range.

Notes: Abstract In a 90° scattering experiment performed on a plasma with a density of some 1017cm−3 and a temperature of some eV a scattering spectrum is expected which consists essentially of an intense central part and two very weak satellite peaks. In this investigation the spectrum of the central part (ion line) was resolved. From the ion line alone which was in good agreement with calculated spectra, the ion temperature, electron temperature and electron density were determined. At some plasma parameters only a few particles were included in the Debye volume. Also in these cases no deviations from calculated spectra have been observed. In addition the position and half-width of the satellites were measured. The position of the satellites yields an independent value of the electron density which agrees very well with that determined from the ion line. The half-width of the satellites was much broader than expected theoretically due to fluctuations of the electron density within the scattering volume. The measurement was performed on a theta pinch plasma. The energy of the condensor bank was 7.5 kJ, the voltage 18 kV. As a light source aQ-switch laser was used with a power of about 100 MW. Because of beam stops to prevent stray light only a fourth of the whole power reached the plasma.

Notes: Abstract An experiment which allows measurement of a collective scattering spectrum of a plasma in the forward direction (7°) in a single discharge is described. The ion temperatures were determined from the scattering spectra for filling pressures between 10 and 100 μD2. To improve accuracy the electron temperature was also measured by a 90° scattering experiment. In all cases measured spectra agreed within experimental accuracy with those expected of thermal plasmas. The electron temperatures were in all cases approximately 175 eV near the time of maximumB field. However, the ion temperature changed from about 650 eV at 10 μD2 to about 175 eV at 100 μD2. This behaviour is expected from heating and loss mechanisms characteristic of theta pinches. The ion temperature obtained from neutron measurements (1300 eV at 10 μD2) is higher, than that obtained from the laser scattering experiment. A locally varying ion temperature or superthermal fluctuations could explain the discrepancy.

Notes: Abstract An experiment for measuring electron density spatially resolved with high time resolution is described. The experiment was performed side on on a Theta pinch plasma. The light source (TEA-CO2 laser), the window problem, the area detector for the interferogram are discussed. The sensitivity of the technique is 1–2×1015 electrons/cm2. Some examples of measured density profiles show that the method may be used effectively on toroidal plasma machines.
