Notes: Abstract Toxicological studies in a variety of different animal species have shown that cyclosporin A (CS-A) is a unique immunosuppressant, since it does not cause myelotoxic, teratogenic, mutagenic, or carcinogenic effects. This is undoubtedly due to the fact that CS-A produces its immunosuppressive effects by a specific action on T lymphocytes rather than by a cytotoxic mechanism. The incidence of acute inflammatory lesions was also not significantly higher in treated animals than in controls. Clear-cut organ toxicity only occurred in rats and cynomolgus monkeys, where at high doses nephro- and hepatotoxicity were observed.

Notes: Abstract: The family of centrally equivalent pairs of projections in a W*〈;-algebra A forms a complete *〈;-lattice that is *〈;-order isomorphic to the complete *〈;-lattice of weak*〈;-closed inner ideals in A and to the complete *〈;-lattice of structural projections on A. Furthermore, the set of symmetric elements of is order isomorphic to the complete orthomodular lattice of projections in A. Although not itself, in general, orthomodular, possesses a complementation that allows for definitions of orthogonality, centre, and central orthogonality to be given. A less familiar notion in lattice theory, that is well-known in the theory of Jordan algebras and Jordan triple systems, is that of rigid collinearity of a pair (e 1,f 1) and (e 2,f 2) of elements of . This is defined and characterized in terms of properties of . A W*〈;-algebra A is sometimes thought of as providing a model for a statistical physical system. In this case may be considered to represent the set consisting of a particular kind of sub-system, and the central orthogonality and rigid collinearity of pairs of elements of may be regarded as representing two different types of disjointness of the corresponding sub-systems. It is therefore natural to consider bounded measures m on that are additive on centrally orthogonal and rigidly collinear pairs of elements. Using results of J.D.M. Wright, it is shown that, provided that A has no weak*〈;-closed ideal of Type I 2, such measures are precisely those that are the restrictions of bounded centrally symmetric sesquilinear functionals φ m on A×A. Furthermore, m is an hermitian measure on the complete *〈;-lattice if and only if the sesquilinear functional φ m is hermitian and m is a normal measure if and only if φ m is separately weak*-continuous. These results can be regarded as Gleason-type theorems.

Notes: Abstract An orthoalgebra, which is a natural generalization of an orthomodular lattice or poset, may be viewed as a “logic” or “proposition system” and, under a welldefined set of circumstances, its elements may be classified according to the Aristotelian modalities: necessary, impossible, possible, and contingent. The necessary propositions band together to form a local filter, that is, a set that intersects every Boolean subalgebra in a filter. In this paper, we give a coherent account of the basic theory of Orthoalgebras, define and study filters, local filters, and associated structures, and prove a version of the compactness theorem in classical algebraic logic.

Notes: Abstract Croc lattices are of central importance in the mathematical foundation of quantum mechanics. They reflect the structure of the logical calculus of propositions concerning microphenomena. In this context, the mathematical consequences resulting from the special structure of the lattice are of particular interest. Beginning with the notion of hemimorphism of a croc lattice, we get, in a natural way, an extension of the structure of the lattice by the Baer *-semigroup. We embed the Baer *-semigroup in an algebra with generalized *- and ′-operations and prove some theorems as consequences of the particular properties of the underlying croc lattice.

Notes: Abstract Observables on hypergraphs are described by event-valued measures. We first distinguish between finitely additive observables and countably additive ones. We then study the spectrum, compatibility, and functions of observables. Next a relationship between observables and certain functionals on the set of measures M(H) of a hypergraph H is established. We characterize hypergraphs for which every linear functional on M(H) is determined by an observable. We define the concept of an “effect” and show that observables are related to effect-valued measures. Finally, we define “operational” transformations from M(H) to itself and show that they can be described as a certain combination of effects.

Notes: Abstract Test spaces are mathematical structures that underlie quantum logics in much the same way that Hilbert space underlies standard quantum logic. In this paper, we give a coherent account of the basic theory of test spaces and show how they provide an infrastructure for the study of quantum logics. IfL is the quantum logic for a physical systemL, then a support inL may be interpreted as the set of all propositions that are possible whenL is in a certain state. We present an analog for test spaces of the notion of a quantum-logical support and launch a study of the classification of supports.
