    Notes: Quantum, wires, ranging in width from 900 to 42 nm, were patterned onto a 10-nm-thick In0.2Ga0.8As quantum well in GaAs cladding then regrown by migration-enhanced epitaxy. Atomic-resolution transmission electron microscopy images of two of the quantum wires, one 400 nm wide and the other 42 nm wide, show lattice deformation of the quantum wires due to compression by the cladding. The lattice constant in the growth direction varies with horizontal position inside each wire, from largest in the wire center to smallest at the sidewalls. In the 400 nm wire, the lattice constant in the growth direction fully reaches the pseudomorphically strained value of 5.83 A(ring) at a distance of 165 A(ring) from the sidewall, while the lattice constant in the 42 nm wire reaches only 5.79 A(ring), at 75 A(ring) from the sidewall. From the value of the compressed lattice constant in the center of the 42 nm wire, the amount of strain in the center of the wire is inferred and, from this strain, the expected strain-induced band-gap energy shift is calculated. Photoluminescence measurements are made on the wires, showing a strain-induced increase in peak emission energy with decreasing wire size. That this energy shift is strain induced is verified by comparing it to the far smaller energy shift of an unregrown but, otherwise, identical sample, which has no regrowth-induced compressive strain. For the 42 nm quantum wire, after the calculated contribution due to increased quantum confinement is accounted for, the energy shift measured by photoluminescence is consistent with the calculated value to within the experimental error. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have observed two-beam coupling gain (0.273 cm−1) that exceeds absorption (0.145 cm−1) in InP:Fe without applying an external field at λ=1.32 μm. Measurements of the gain coefficient as a function of grating spacing fit the photorefractive theory for simultaneous electron-hole transport, with the effective density of traps NE = (3.86 ± 1.1)NE=(3.86±1.1)× 1015 cm−3 and ξ, the factor that accounts for competition between electrons and holes, equaling −0.729±0.026. Absorption measurements, combined with the photoionization cross sections of electrons and holes, confirm these results. The agreement between theory and experiment suggests how to choose impurity concentrations that optimize net gain.

    Notes: Abstract It has been shown previously that there is a greater gastric mucosal blood flow response to histamine than to gastrin stimulation for similar acid secretory values. We have confirmed these observations under steady state conditions and also shown that the oxygen consumption depends on acid secretion in a similar way for both histamine and gastrin stimulation. Furthermore the degree of oxygen extraction from the gastric circulation is significantly less (p〈0.001) during histamine stimulation than during gastrin stimulation. This supports the hypothesis that histamine causes a vasodilatation in the gastric mucosa in two ways, one may be linked to secretory activity and the other a pure dilator action.

    Notes: Abstract Growth hormone-release inhibiting hormone (somatostatin) inhibits the gastric acid response to food in concious cats. We have confirmed that this tetradecapeptide blocks the food stimulated gastrin release. However, the inhibition of gastrin release is delayed relative to that of acid secretion, showing that the inhibition of food stimulated acid secretion is by a primary effect on the acid secretory mechanism. No evidence was found of potentiation of either the gastric acid output or serum concentration of gastric in response to food.

    Notes: Abstract Burimamide has been shown to have an acid stimulating action in the conscious cat when injected during basal conditions. Metiamide does not stimulate gastric acid secretion and when injected in addition to burimamide reduces the acid secretion seen to that drug. These results suggest a possible partial agonist action of burimamide, an action not shared by metiamide.

    Notes: Abstract  Farmers in developing countries cannot afford inorganic fertilizers. Multipurpose tree leaves or livestock manure are major sources of nutrients for soil fertility replenishment. Nutrient release from these organic inputs depends on their chemical composition and on soil properties. This study determined the chemical composition of leaves of four African browse species and manure from goats fed leaves as protein supplements, and their mineralization of C, N and P. Cumulative evolved CO2 was significantly correlated with the initial N content of the organic inputs (r 0.83, P〈0.05) and the C : N ratio (r 0.80, P〈0.05), and was negatively correlated with the lignin : N ratio (r–0.71, P〈0.05). Cumulative P released was negatively correlated with the C : P ratio (r 0.76, P〈0.05) and positively correlated with initial P content of the organic amendments (r 0.76, P〈0.05). Cumulative N mineralized was not significantly correlated with initial N, lignin or P concentrations of the organic inputs. Leaves from Acacia karro and Acacia nilotica had high concentrations of polyphenols, which may have caused immobilization of N in both leaves and manure. Gliricidia sepium leaves had low amounts of soluble polyphenols, a high N content and a high rate of N mineralization, but the manure from goats fed Gliricidia leaves immobilized N. The leaves of all browse species immobilized P, but the manure released P. The results suggested that some browse leaves cannot meet the N and P requirements of crops due to their low P content and prolonged N and P immobilization. However, the manures had higher P contents and rates of P mineralization, which suggested that manure is a good source of P for crops. The implications of these results for nutrient cycling in mixed farming systems is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The histamine H2-receptor antagonist metiamide is an inhibitor of endogenous and stimulated gastric-acid secretion. It appears to have therapeutic possibilities in duodenal-ulcer disease. Three patients exhibiting the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome have been treated with this drug for six months or more. Rapid symptomatic improvement occurred in each case, followed by ulcer healing. There were also reductions in gastric secretion and consistent changes in the fasting serum-gastrin concentration. One patient relapsed temporarily during therapy. There have been no side effects. It is concluded that, in the short term, metiamide is of benefit in the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
