Notes: Abstract Production of extracellular dissolved organic substances by cultures of the marine coccolithophorid Hymenomonas carterae SMBA 254 was investigated by the 14C-tracer technique. In 4 h incubations, extracellular 14C production represented 20 to 64% of 14C incorporation into cell material for cultures nearing, or during stationary growth; for rapidly growing cultures with relatively low cell densities the 14C-production was only 4 to 10% of incorporation. Intra-and extra-cellular material was fractionated by ion-exchange membrane electrodialysis. Ionic compounds accounted for 40 to 60% of extracellular material; in contrast only 16 to 27% of intracelular metabolites were in this category. Of a range of methods which were investigated, separation of compounds by gel-filtration in conjunction with two-dimensional thin-layer chromatography proved most effective. Up to 80% of extracellular material was of less than 1 800 mol. wt and included carbohydrates and amino acids, with glutamic acid predominating. The intracellular material was more heterogeneous, with a substantially greater proportion of high molecular weight material. The quite distinct compositions show clearly that extracellular production observed in these experiments arose through excretion and was not attributable to cell lysis.

Notes: Abstract The effects of gabaculin (3-amino 2,3-dihydrobenzoic acid) and laevulinic acid on the regeneration of protochlorophyllide from exogenous δ-aminolaevulinic acid in leaves of dark-grown barley (Hordeum vulgare) after a brief light treatment were compared. Gabaculin, a potent inhibitor of chlorophyll biosynthesis, did not inhibit this process showing that it affects the formation of δ-aminolaevulinic acid rather than its further metabolism. Laevulinic acid, which is an inhibitor of δ-aminolaevulinic acid dehydratase, prevented regeneration of protochlorophyllide provided pools of intermediates in the biosynthetic sequence were depleted. Formation of relatively large amounts of protochlorophyllide in some experiments suggests a lack of control in the utilization of δ-aminolaevulinic acid for protochlorophyllide synthesis.

Notes: Abstract The organisation of the thalamofugal visual projections to the forebrain has been determined in chick embryos by injecting retrograde tracers (true blue and either fluorogold or diamidino yellow) into the left or right hyperstriatum. The embryos were injected on day 19 of incubation and allowed to survive for a further 4 days. Unlike chicks posthatching, the embryos were found to have no asymmetry of the thalamofugal visual projections, irrespective of whether they had received 24 h of light exposure prior to injecting the tracer dyes or had been kept in darkness. The light exposure did, however, lead to a significant increase in the ratio of the number of cell bodies in the thalamus labelled contralaterally to the injection site to the number labelled ipsilaterally (CI ratio) in male embryos. The elevation of the CI ratio appeared to be due to an increase in the number of contralateral projections from each side of the thalamus to the hyperstriatum on the other side of the forebrain. Thus, growth of these visual projections is promoted by light experience during the later stages of embryonic development. Most likely, light stimulation promotes increased arborisation of end-terminals in the hyperstriatum. Development of the thalamofugal visual projections in female embryos was not influenced by exposure to light, a finding consistent with earlier studies demonstrating that circulating oestrogen either inhibits or over-rides the sensitivity of these developing neurones to light stimulation.

Notes: [Auszug] At test, two kinds of food grains are distributed over the test floor, and it is arranged by earlier training that the searching animal, although preferring one type, is quite prepared to take either. Notes: Summary Asymmetry in the visual pathways from the rostral thalamus to the hyperstriatum of the chicken has been found after injecting the retrograde tracer, True Blue (TB), into either the left or right hyperstriatum on day 2 or 12, post-hatching. There are ipsilateral connections from the ventromedial region of the left dorsolateral thalamus, lateral part (DLL) to the left hyperstriatum, and contralateral connections from the left dorsolateral thalamus, rostrolateral part (DLAlr) and the dorsolateral thalamus, dorsal part (DLLd) to the right hyperstriatum. On the right side of the thalamus, the ipsilateral connections from DLL to the right hyperstriatum are present, but there are only very few contralateral connections to the left hyperstriatum. No asymmetry in these pathways is seen in animals injected with TB on day 21. By this age the contralateral connections from the right thalamus to the left hyperstriatum have developed. Thus, the structural asymmetry in these visual pathways is transient, a finding which explains a controversy between two papers published recently in this journal, and which adds considerably to our understanding of the behavioural asymmetries known to occur in the chicken's response to stimuli presented to either the left or right eye. The direction of the asymmetry in visual pathways depends on asymmetrical light input to the eyes of the embryo. Normally the head of the embryo is oriented such that the left eye is occluded. If the head is withdrawn from the egg so that the right eye can be occluded and the left eye exposed to light, the direction of asymmetry in the thalamo-hyperstriatal pathways is reversed. The contralateral connections from the right side of the thalamus (fed by the left eye) to the left hyperstriatum are now present, while those from the left thalamus (fed by the right eye) to the right hyperstriatum are absent. Thus light exposure stimulates the growth of the contralateral connections from the rostral thalamus to hyperstriatum.

Notes: Summary Pre-natal exposure of rats to 2,4,5-T has long-term effects on behavior. A test for novelty responding detects abnormalities after exposure to a single dose as low as 6 mg/kg on day 8 of gestation. This is well below doses reported to be morphologically teratogenic, and raises concern for human exposure.
