Description / Table of Contents: Summary 1- The behaviour of workers ofMyrmica laevinodis confronted by an intruder (a worker ofMyrmica ruginodis) varies from individual to individual in small groups. A certain proportion of workers (about 50%) do not respond, others (30%) approach the intruder without violence, the remaining (20%) react more or less violently. Successive tests showed an increase in violence whilst the proportion of ants that attacked the intruder changed little. 2- When the ants were rearranged into 4 groups according to their activity and aggressivity, the aggressivity (number of bites achieved) of individuals altered so that the percentage of aggressive workers resembled that in the original groups. 3- When the ants were restored to their original groups we observed (a) an increased level of aggressivity; (b) a tendency for an individual to retain the rank of aggressivity if adopted in (2), whilst a large pool of ants remained non-aggressive throughout.

Notes: Summary 81 cases of acute leukaemia were classified according to cytochemical criteria. PAS, peroxidase and esterase reactions were used for classification. Rates of complete remissions and duration of survival after diagnosis in the different groups were compared. A significant higher rate of complete remissions and longer duration of survival was detected in PAS type leukaemias compared to all the other types in adults. There was no significant difference in the remission rates between PAS type leukaemias in children and adults treated for at least 7 days. These results lead to the conclusion that adults with this type of acute leukaemia should receive the same treatment as children do.

Description / Table of Contents: Résumé 1.
Notes: Abstract Larvae of Nyctiphanes couchii (Bell) were reared in the laboratory from the second and third calyptopis stages; they were fed animal, algal and mixed diets. Data are presented on larval morphology, growth and moulting rates. It is demonstrated that N. couchii is capable of filter-feeding and of capturing prey from the calyptopis phase onwards. The influence of diet on larval development is discussed: algal diets induce a slower growth rate than that achieved by feeding with Artemia salina nauplii alone, and increase the length of intermoult periods and of ontogenesis. A limited supply of A. salina nauplii has similar effects.

Notes: Abstract Larvae of Meganyctiphanes norvegica (M. Sars), caught with a plankton net, were reared in the laboratory from the calyptopis phase onwards, under different temperature and trophic conditions. Eyestalk ablation was performed on the first furciliae. Data are presented on growth, moulting rate and ontogenesis of the larvae as a function of the varying experimental conditions, and on larval morphology, pigmentation and diet. Recent modifications of larval nomenclature in euphausiids are discussed.

Notes: Summary Many cases of hereditary elliptocytosis (HE) result from mutated spectrin α-chains. It has repeatedly been observed that the amount of a mutant α-chain is different in various affected individuals, resulting in clinical pictures of variable severity. The different levels are thought to result from different percentages of the αspectrin allele in trans. Such percentages, in turn, could be under genetic control. We tested this hypothesis in a large Algerian family with SpαI/65 HE. In an informative sibship, we found three persons with a distinctly high level of expression of the SpαI/65 variant, suggesting the existence, in trans, of a low percentage α-allele. The α-spectrin gene haplotype associated with the latter was constantly − +−, based on the XbaI, PvuII and MspI polymorphic sites. In contrast, a basal level of expression of the SpαI/65 variant in the same sibship indicated, in trans, the existence of a normal percentage α-allele. The haplotype corresponding to this other α-allele was + − +. Study of another generation of the family showed, however, that the − + − haplotype could also be linked to a normal percentage α-allele. These results are consistent with the view that the expression level of αI/65 spectrin (and of other types of α-variants) is compounded by a genetic factor that is linked to the normal α-allele in trans. The low percentage allele itself remains silent in the simple heterozygous state.

Notes: Abstract The dc electrical conductivity of rare-earth doped ceria has been measured as a function of temperature (300–600 K) and composition (0.05–15 mol% M2O3) on using the complex impedance technique. Five dopants have been selected, yttrium and the lanthanides Yb, Gd, Nd, and La. For all of them, the variations of the activation energy versus dopant concentration are similar and characterized by the existence of a minimum. This peculiar property can be understood if attractive interactions between immobile dopant ions and mobile oxygen vacancies are taken into account. From an analysis of the experimental results, it is concluded that this interaction extends at least to third or fourth nearest neighbors depending on the size and the electronic configuration of the dopant ion.

Notes: Summary The pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of diacetolol, the principal metabolite of acebutolol, were studied in 6 healthy subjects. Plasma concentrations were determined following a single intravenous injection of diacetolol 100 mg and three oral doses of diacetolol 100, 400 and 800 mg, in random order. The average oral bioavailability of diacetolol was F: 0.302±0.052 (100 mg), 0.363±0.052 (400 mg) and 0.426±0.068 (800 mg); the differences are not significant. The mean plasma half-life of the terminal phase, 7.94±0.26 h after intravenous administration, was significantly higher than after oral administration 12.27±1.00 h (100 mg), 12.82±1.59 h (400 mg) and 13.05±1.22 h (800 mg) (p〈0.02 to 0.05); the mean urine half-lives of the terminal phase were not significantly different. Renal clearance of diacetolol 10.2±0.81·h−1 represented about two-thirds of total body clearance 15.9±1.21·h−1. The results suggest either a first-pass effect or incomplete absorption of diacetolol after oral administration.

Notes: Summary The pharmacokinetics of acebutolol and hydrochlorothiazide (HCT) alone or in combination were studied in 12 healthy subjects in a cross over study. Acebutolol and diacetolol (the main metabolite) in plasma and urine were determined by HPLC and hydrochlorothiazide by GLC. The main pharmacokinetic parameters of acebutolol did not differ significantly: AUC 4492±272 µg l−1 h given alone versus 4118±354 µg l−1 h with HCT, half-life (7,69±0,32 h vs 8,10±0,72 h) and renal clearance (13,1±0,5 lh−1 vs 13,8±0,9 lh−1), respectively. There was no difference in diacetolol pharmacokinetics. HCT values were not significantly different: AUC 784±48 µg l−1 h given alone and 720±42 µg l−1 h with acebutolol, t1/2 (4,79±0,37 h vs 4,73±0,43 h). The renal clearance was slightly higher when HCT was given with acebutolol (26,2±2,6 vs 20,3±2,11 h−1,p〈0,05). This increase, observed during the first four hours, was probably due to competition between the drugs for binding to red blood cells.

Notes: Abstract The flux asymmetries measured by spectrometers on board spacecraft contain information on particle parameters. The net flux intensity (NFI) method provides a tool to evaluate these parameters. The NFI method is valid when both the spin period of the spacecraft and the time resolution of the particle spectrometers are much shorter than the characteristic time-scale of the particle flux variations. We apply the NFI analysis to the flux asymmetry measurements made by GEOS 2 at the nightside geosynchronous orbit in the late substorm growth phase. The cross-tail current of energetic ions, their pressure gradient and average drift velocity, as well as a field-aligned flows are investigated. Current disruption at substorm onset and the –convection surge” mechanism during dipolarization of the magnetic field are directly observed.

Notes: Abstract The IESP experiment implemented onboard the Interball auroral probe measures the six components (3B, 3E) of the waves in the ULF range: 0.1–10 Hz and from time to time 0–30 Hz. Two different kinds of waves have been observed in the auroral region at altitudes between 10 000 and 20 000 km: (1) electrostatic emissions which consist of quasi-monochromatic structures with frequencies above the oxygen gyrofrequency, superimposed on a wide band signal interpreted as a Doppler broadening, (2) electromagnetic wide band spectrum fluctuations. These emissions are interpreted as current-driven electromagnetic or electrostatic ion cyclotron waves. The electromagnetic/electrostatic character is controlled by the plasma parameter βi and by the O+ concentration.
