    Notes: Summary Over the past 5 years, 134 digits were replanted in 85 patients. In 9 patients — 10 digits (11%) — the causation of injury was a motorcycle chain. The significant incidence of this type of injury has prompted us to report the replantation results. Hopefully, this might be used to caution the public against cleaning the chain while it is in motion. The sites of amputation were 5 in Tamai's Zone I and 5 in Tamai's Zone II. All amputated parts were distal to the DIP joint. The digits were replanted with anastomosis of both the artery and the vein. Eight out of the 10 replanted digits survived to give a success rate of 80%. There was no statistical difference between this rate and that for all other replanted digits resulting from various causes in Zones I and II, i.e. 86%. The high success rate suggests that replantation of the chain-amputated digits should be recommended, and the apparently poor conditions of the crush injury are no contraindications for surgery.

    Notes: Abstract. The properties of hyperpolarization-activated current in pregnant rat uterus (17–19 days gestation) were investigated using microelectrode and patch-clamp techniques, and isometric tension recording. The resting membrane potentials were –58.4 mV and –48.5 mV in longitudinal and circular muscle cells, respectively. Application of hyperpolarizing current pulses produced a time-dependent anomalous inward rectification of membrane potential only in circular muscle cells. Under voltage-clamp conditions, inward currents (I h) were activated by long hyperpolarizing pulses below –60 mV in circular but not in longitudinal muscle cells. Application of extracellular but not intracellular Cs+ reduced the amplitude of I h in a concentration-dependent manner (an IC50 of 0.15 mM). The reversal potential for I h was –26.2 mV and the slope conductance was 5 nS/pF. Changes in [K+]o and [Na+]o shifted the reversal potential, and I h amplitude increased with excess [K+]o and decreased with low [Na+]o. The steady-state activation of I h was well fitted by a Boltzmann equation with a half-activation potential of –84.3 mV and a slope factor of 9.6 mV. Time courses of activation and deactivation of the current strongly depended on membrane potential, and were well fitted by a single exponential function. The activation time constant of I h was dependent on temperature. In isometric tension recording, application of extracellular Cs+ to the circular muscles reduced the frequency, but not the amplitude, of spontaneous contractions in a concentration-dependent manner. It is concluded that in pregnant rat uterus I h channels are predominantly distributed in smooth muscle cells from the circular layer. Since I h is activated at the resting membrane potential, it is likely that this current contributes to the maintenance of resting membrane potential and spontaneous activity in circular smooth muscle cells of late pregnant rats.

    Notes: The sympathetic ganglion of the toad consists of two kinds of neurons, the sB and sC neurons of which axons are the B and C fibers, respectively. The sB neurons receive a monosegmental innervation of preganglionic B fibers whereas the sC neurons receive mono- or multisegmental innervation of preganglionic C fibers. The pre- and postganglionic neurons are divided into a fast (sB neuron) and slow (sC neuron) conduction system. The conduction velocity of the preganglionic axons is proportional to that of the synaptically connected postganglionic neuron axons in the sB and sC neuron systems. In the sB neuron system, the conduction velocity of the preganglionic axons is faster than that of the postganglionic fibers. The relation is reversed in the sC neuron system. The antidromic and orthodromic responses as well as the electrical membrane properties of sC neurons were analyzed and compared with those of the sB neurons. In both neurons, the time constant of the synaptic potential decay was always longer than that of the membrane. The synaptic potentials of sB and sC neurons were abolished at the membrane potential levels of -10 mv and -7 mv on the average, respectively, which indicates that the equilibrium potentials of these neurons are almost the same. The changes in the excitability of the soma as well as axon of the sB and sC neurons after a single response and the response of the sB and sC neurons to a long cathodal current were analyzed and compared.
