    Notes: Abstract We have performed thermal conductivity measurements on C60 and C70 crystals grown by sublimation. For single crystal C60, the thermal conductivity k is ∼0.4 W/m K at room temperature and is nearly temperature independent down to 260K. We observed a sharp orientational phase transition at 260K, indicated by a 25% jump in k. Below 90K, k is time dependent, which manifests itself as a shoulder-like structure at ∼85K. The temperature and time dependence of k below 260K can be described by a simple model which accounts for the thermally activated hopping of C60 molecules between two nearly degenerate orientations, separated by an energy barrier of ∼240 meV. It is found that solvents have a strong influence on the physical properties of C70 crystals. For solvent-free C70 crystal, k is about constant above 300K. There is a broad first-order phase transition in k at 300K with a 25% jump. We associate this transition with the aligning of the fivefold axes of the C70 molecules along the c-axis of the hexagonal lattice. Upon further cooling, k increases and is time independent.

    Notes: We report a detailed study of ac/dc magnetization and longitudinal/transverse transport properties of La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7 single crystals below Tc=118 K. We find that the resistivity minimum at 40 K is related to the reentrant spin glass phase at the same temperature, accompanied by additional anomalous Hall effects. The carrier concentration from the ordinary Hall effects remains constant during the transition and is close to the nominal doping level (0.4 holes/Mn). The spin glass behavior comes from the competition between ferromagnetic double exchange and antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions, which leads to phase separation, i.e., a mixture of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic clusters, representing the canted antiferromagnetic state. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Thin dysprosium c-axis films (40–400 A(ring)) were grown coherently between 500-A(ring) lutetium layers by molecular beam epitaxy. Bulk magnetization measurements show that these sandwich structures order magnetically at TN(approximately-equal-to)178 K (=TN of elemental Dy) and undergo ferromagnetic transitions at temperatures which range from 100 K (400 A(ring) Dy) to 175 K (40 A(ring) Dy), significantly enhanced from the bulk TC=85 K. The Dy basal plane lattice parameters in the films were determined by room-temperature x-ray diffraction. We observe a change in these values that correlates with the rise in TC, which suggests that this rise is due to epitaxial strain. The relatively small low-temperature magnetic susceptibility displayed by these samples indicates the presence of a large anisotropy in the basal plane. We address both the issues of the susceptibility and the high ferromagnetic transition temperature.

    Notes: We studied the magnetothermopower of Co/Cu1−xNix multilayers (with x=0.37 and 0.42) at various temperatures. Both systems have negative thermopower and the magnitude of the thermopower increases as the magnetic field increases. We found that as the ferromagnetic component of the magnetization becomes larger at lower temperatures, both the magnetothermopower and the magnetoresistance decrease. The inverse relationship between the thermopower and the resistance, when the field H varies, holds well at different temperatures. We interpret the results in terms of the two-current model, with an emphasis on the spin-split density of states.

    Notes: We have prepared granular films of Fe (36 at. %)–Mg (64 at. %) and measured the magnetization, resistance, and thermopower as a function of the applied magnetic field at temperatures between 300 and 6 K. The as-prepared sample has a magnetoresistance ratio (ΔR/Rmax) of −6.3% in a field of 5.5 T at 6 K. The samples were annealed at temperatures between 150 °C and 228 °C for one hour. The MR does not vary as the square of the magnetization, as predicted by theory. We attribute this to a particle size distribution effect.

    Notes: We have studied the magnetothermopower S(H,T) for a series of Co/Cu multilayers with a constant Co layer thickness of 10 A(ring) but with Cu layer thickness varying between 9 and 21 A(ring). The thermopower is negative, and its magnitude increases with magnetic field. We also found the magnetothermopower to be linear in the conductance for all samples. In two samples studied, the linear relationship holds from room temperature down to 50 K, with the proportionality constant linear in temperature. The zero-field thermopower is roughly the same for all samples despite different Cu layer thickness. This behavior can be understood from the spin-dependent interface scattering model.

    Notes: Ceramic samples of composition (La1−xGdx)2/3Ca1/3MnO3 were prepared and used as targets to grow films onto LaAlO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Comparison of the electrical resistance and thermopower, measured vs temperature and applied magnetic fields, indicates transport dominated by positively charged small polarons in the high temperature paramagnetic state. Nonetheless, the Hall effect, measured in 0.5 μm thick films of composition x=0 and x=0.25, has the sign that is normally ascribed to negatively charged free carriers. The magnitude of the Hall coefficient decreases exponentially with increasing temperature with an activation energy that differs from that of the resistivity. This behavior and its anomalous negative sign are interpreted to result from face-diagonal hopping of small polarons in the Mn sublattice. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The main source of 1/f resistance noise in materials exhibiting giant magnetoresistance (GMR) is the GMR effect itself. Large 1/f noise from fluctuations in the parallel vs antiparallel alignment appears when ||dR/dH|| is large. We have studied this noise as a function of the number of Co/Cu bilayers in multilayer samples and discuss the implications for devices. Barkhausen noise in the resistance as the field is swept through the GMR transition is used to estimate coherent domain sizes between 0.1 and 10 μm2 for a single Co layer in the multilayers. GMR noise is also seen in a Co/Ag granular system.

    Notes: Although many binary heavy rare-earth alloy systems have been studied extensively, there has been little work reported on the Dy-Lu system. The properties of single-crystal DyxLu1−x films grown by molecular beam epitaxy are reported. SQUID magnetometer and neutron diffraction measurements on samples with x=0.4, 0.5, and 0.6 show that the samples order helimagnetically with Néel temperatures of TN=90, 105, and 120 K, respectively. The helical turn angle was mapped as a function of temperature for each of the three alloys. Magnetic x-ray scattering, the first in an alloy, was observed at the (002)± positions at 15 and 60 K in the x=0.4 sample using resonant exchange scattering of synchrotron radiation at the Dy LIII edge.
