Notes: Cu(50 Å)/NiFe(60 Å)/Cu(60 Å)/Co(20 Å) epitaxial spin-valve structures were grown on GaAs(001) substrates by molecular-beam epitaxy at room temperature. In situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction measurements indicate the stabilization of the bcc-Co(001) phase on 1×1 unreconstructed GaAs(001) for thicknesses up to 20 Å and the epitaxial growth of the fcc-Cu(001) spacer layer and fcc-FeNi(001) top magnetic layer. Magneto-optical Kerr effect and Brillouin light-scattering measurements of the composite structure showed that a fourfold cubic anisotropy is present but a twofold anisotropy also occurs directed along the 〈110〉 axes. The easy cubic axes are directed along the 〈100〉 axes, which implies that the cubic anisotropy constant Kl for bcc-Co is positive. The magnetic anisotropy of the bcc-Co layer has a striking influence on the magnetoresistance characteristics which were found to be angular dependent. A simulation of this mixed anisotropy behavior yields quantitative agreement with the experimental results. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report the dynamic hysteresis behavior of epitaxial single ferromagnetic fcc NiFe(001), fcc Co(001) layers, and fcc NiFe/Cu/Co(001) spin-valve structures investigated as a function of field sweep rate in the range of 0.01–270 kOe/s using the magneto-optic Kerr effect. The hysteresis loop area A is found to follow the scaling relation A∝H(overdot)α with α∼0.13 and ∼0.02 at low sweep rates and ∼0.70 and ∼0.30 at high sweep rates for 60 Å NiFe and 40 Å Co single magnetic layer structures, respectively. For the single and double spin valves, the "double-switching" behavior which occurs at low sweep rates transforms to "single switching" at ∼154 and ∼192 kOe/s, respectively. Our results provide direct experimental evidence that the magnetic anisotropy strength affects dynamic hysteresis scaling in ultrathin magnetic films. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We demonstrate that uniform, ordered, single-domain magnetic nanoscale dots can be fabricated on concentrated colloid surfaces. The substrate consists of compact silica nanosphere arrays grown on a glass wafer. Through the subsequent deposition and oxidation treatment of a Co film, monodisperse magnetic Co nanoscale dot arrays with controlled magnetic properties and size were obtained. We suggest that magnetic dots deposited on colloidal surfaces might open a way of developing artificially nanostructured materials for fundamental studies in nanomagnetism and for applications such as patterned magnetic recording media. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The magnetization vector configurations in an epitaxial Si(001)/Cu/Co/Cu/Fe20Ni80/Cu/Co/Cu double spin valve structure have been investigated at room temperature using polarized neutron reflectivity measurements. The layer-averaged magnetic moment per FeNi atom was found to be 0.99±0.06 μB at saturation, while the top (bottom) Co layer moment was 1.69±0.09 μB (1.67±0.08 μB), which are identical to the bulk values within experimental error. Furthermore, the Co magnetization vectors are found to lie in-plane but canted with respect to the applied field direction for an applied field strength smaller than the coercive fields (∼80 and 130 Oe) of the Co layers. This result indicates that a complete antiparallel alignment of the layer magnetizations is not reached causing a corresponding reduction in the giant magnetoresistance (GMR). These observations emphasize the importance of the detailed spin configuration in determining the GMR amplitude at low fields. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary The linear stability of plane Poiseuille flow of a conducting Oldroyd liquid in the presence of a transverse magnetic field is studied. The fourth-order Orr-Sommerfeld equation governing the stability analysis in this case is solved numerically by a spectral method.

Notes: Abstract Aluminium oxide is relatively cheap material, abundant almosteverywhere and therefore it is widely used for thermal sprayapplications. Various alumina based powder containing 13 wt. Titania, two different 40 wt.% Zirconia and three differentcompositions of alumina-zirconia-chromia were deposited byatmospheric plasma spraying (APS) and high power plasma spraying(HPPS). The coatings obtained were evaluated by optical microscopy, microhardness measurements, X-ray diffraction and porositymeasurements. Moreover, abrasion and friction wear resistance wereevaluated by using Pin-on-Disc machine. Microhardness values of APScoatings are relatively high as compared to HPPS coatings except inalumina-zirconia-chromia coatings. HPPS have higher hardness values.APS coatings are much coarser and show higher porosity values thanHPPS coatings. The best wear/friction behaviour exhibited coatingAl2O3-40 wt.% ZrO2 that deposited from agglomerated andsintered powder type.
