Notes: The shape of the liquid–liquid coexistence curve of five binary liquid mixtures containing methanol (methanol, methanol-d1, methanol-d4) and cyclohexane (cyclohexane, cyclohexane-d12) is studied using a differential refractometer. It is found that all systems have approximately the same critical composition (mole fraction) and approximately the same shape of the coexistence curve in the vicinity of the critical point. However, the critical temperature changes in a characteristic manner. Replacement of hydrogen atoms involved in hydrogen bonding by deuterium leads to an increase of the critical temperature of about 1.2 K for each replaced hydrogen atom. Replacement of hydrogen atoms not involved in hydrogen bonding leads to a decrease of the critical temperature of about 0.3 K for each replaced hydrogen atom. These are average values referring to the systems methanol/cyclohexane, phenol-d6/D2O, deutero-isobutyric acid (COOH)/H2O, and deutero-isobutyric acid (COOD)/D2O. Substitution of H2O by D2O in the four component system benzene, ethanol, water, ammonium sulfate of near tricritical composition increases a characteristic temperature by about 1 K.

Notes: WPW Variant. Introduction: The differentiation between a nodoventricular fiber and an accessory atrioventricular (AV) pathway with long conduction times and decremental properties could he very difficult even at detailed electrophysiologic study. Methods and Results: A 20-year-old male with a history of a wide QRS tachycardia underwent electrophysiologic study. Baseline intervals were normal. There was evidence of dual AV pathways, and a sudden increase in AH interval was associated with the emergence of a delta wave. The atrio-delta interval showed a progressive prolongation. The preexcited QRS complex was typical of a posteroseptal pathway, and the earliest ventricular activation site was recorded at the posteroseptal region. Retrograde conduction was exclusively over the normal conduction system. During ventricular extrastimulation, a sudden increase in HA interval was associated with anterograde conduction over the accessory pathway. The intervals between the stimulus artifact and the onset of the delta wave during atrial pacing from two atrial sites (S-Delta) were compared with those between the retrograde atrial electrogram on the His channel and the onset of the delta wave during ventricular pacing (A2HB-Delta). When pacing from the proximal coronary sinus, the shortest S-Delta interval did become shorter than the longest A2HK-Delta interval (155 vs 170 msec). Conclusion: The finding that the S-Delta interval could become shorter than the A2HB-Delta interval provides strong evidence that this accessory pathway was not connected to the AV node hut arose directly from the atrial tissue of the posteroseptal region.

Notes: [Auszug] We have solved the high-resolution crystal structures of the Drosophila melanogaster alcohol-binding protein LUSH in complex with a series of short-chain n-alcohols. LUSH is the first known nonenzyme protein with a defined in vivo alcohol-binding function. The structure of LUSH reveals a set of ...

Notes: Abstract Human erythrocytes were irradiated with heavy ions of energies between 4 and 18 MeV/u having linear energy transfer (LET) values between 92 and 14000 keV/µm. Hemolysis has been studied as a macroscopic parameter for membrane damage and changes of the fluidity as a more microscopic parameter. The membrane fluidity changed in a characteristic dose-dependent manner as detected by electron spin resonance employing 12-doxylstearic acid methyl ester spin label (SL 12). Lysis cross sections and RBE values were determined from dose effect curves. The results demonstrate a high hemolytic efficiency of heavy ions compared to X rays. With increasing LET values the measured relative biological efficiency (RBE) values increase continuously. In the complete LET range the cross sections formed one common curve as function of LET and no saturation effects are observed. This is in direct contrast to other biological endpoints such as cell inactivation or DNA damage.

Notes: Summary X- and gamma-irradiation of human erythrocyte membranes (250–1000 Gy) was found to decrease the ratio of weakly to strongly immobilized signal height of membrane-bound maleimide spin label (Mal-6). Subsequent incubation of spin-labeled membranes at ambient temperature (21 °C) induced a progressive increase in this ratio, faster for membranes irradiated with low doses which was hampered by protease inhibitors. These results demonstrate that ionizing radiation stimulates proteolysis of erythrocyte membrane proteins by membrane-associated proteases.
