Description / Table of Contents:
P4O10 and strictly anhydrous liquid ammonia react only at temperatures higher than 25°C. If the concentration of NH4+ ions is rised by a trace of water or NH4Cl in the ppm region, a reaction takes place even at low temperatures. At concentrations of 10-5 to 8% of water, P4O10 and NH3 react without any consumption of water. The P/N ratio in the reaction products reaches at -40 to -70°C after 4 hours a maximum value of 1/1.91 and at +42°C after two months a maximum value of 1/2.35. The reaction products have been analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively by two-dimensional and preparative thin layer chromatography as well as by their IR spectra. For the ammonolysis at low temperatures from the analytical data a reaction mechanism is derived on the basis of directing effects of amidate groups(1). As an intermediate product there occurs only diamidotetrametaphosphate but no trimetaphosphate species.
Notes:
