    Notes: Abstract The marine green coccoidal alga Nanochlorum eukaryotum (N.e.) is of small size with an average diameter of 1.5 μm. It is characterized by primitive-appearing biochemical and morphological properties, which are considerably different from those of other green algae. Thus, it has been proposed that N.e. may be an early developed algal form. To prove this hypothesis, DNA of N.e. was isolated by a phenol extraction procedure, and the chloroplast DNA separated by preparative CsCl density-gradient centrifugation. The kinetic complexity of the nuclear and of the chloroplast DNA was evaluated by reassociation kinetics to 3 × 107 by and 9 × 104 bp, respectively. Several chloroplast genes, including the rRNA genes, were cloned on distinct fragments. The order of the rRNA genes corresponds to the common prokaryotic pattern. The 16S rRNA gene comprises 1,548 bases and is separated from the 23S rRNA gene with its 2,920 bases by a short spacer of 460 bases, which also includes the tRNAIle and tRNAAla genes. The 5S rRNA gene has not been found; it must start further than 500 bases downstream from the 3′-end of the 23S rRNA gene. From the chloroplast rRNA sequences, we have deduced secondary structures of the 16S and 23S rRNAs, which are in agreement with standard models. The rRNA sequences were aligned with corresponding chloroplast sequences; phylogenetic relationships were calculated by several methods. From these calculations, we conclude that N.e. is most closely related to Chlorella vulgaris. Therefore, N.e. does not represent an early developed algal species; the primitive-appearing morphological and biochemical characteristics of N.e. must rather be explained by secondary losses.

    Notes: Abstract. Based on a new definition of dilation a scale discrete version of spherical multiresolution is described, starting from a scale discrete wavelet transform on the sphere. Depending on the type of application, different families of wavelets are chosen. In particular, spherical Shannon wavelets are constructed that form an orthogonal multiresolution analysis. Finally fully discrete wavelet approximation is discussed in the case of band-limited wavelets.

    Notes: Abstract. In modern approximation methods, linear combinations in terms of (space localizing) radial basis functions play an essential role. Areas of application are numerical integration formulae on the unit sphere Ω corresponding to prescribed nodes, spherical spline interpolation and spherical wavelet approximation. The evaluation of such a linear combination is a time-consuming task, since a certain number of summations, multiplications and the calculation of scalar products are required. A generalization of the panel clustering method in a spherical setup is presented. The economy and efficiency of panel clustering are demonstrated for three fields of interest, namely upward continuation of the Earth's gravitational potential, geoid computation by spherical splines and wavelet reconstruction of the gravitational potential.

    Notes: Summary A female patient with Wegener's granulomatosis developed severe bone marrow depression after two years treatment with cyclophosphamide. Corticosteroids alone could not sufficiently suppress disease activity, therefore additive therapy with Cyclosporin A was started. Four weeks later the patient developed a central nervous system disorder with affective disturbances and progressive somnolence. However, inspite of intensive diagnostic procedures, no definite diagnosis could be established. After another two months she died. Post-mortem-examination showed progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. An association between immunosuppressive therapy and reactivation of JC-Virus is suggested.

    Notes: Abstract Twenty-eight patients with tumours of the larynx, divided into supraglottic, glottic, and subglottic lesions, and of the hypopharynx were examined by different MRI techniques using the paramagnetic contrast medium Gd-DTPA. The results of preoperative MRI were compared with clinical laryngoscopy and the pathological tumour classification. The examinations were carried out using plain T1-wand T2-weighted and Gd-DTPA enhanced T1-weighted sequences. Most studies included three slice orientations for optimal assessment of different tumour locations. The most accurate diagnostic information was given by Gd-DTPA-enhanced sequences. The combination of plain images, contrast-enhanced images and subtraction enabled precise assessment of deep infiltration. T2-weighted and proton density sequences conveyed more information about cartilage invasion and liquid-filled structures, but gave more artefacts than T1-weighted images. Laryngoscopy had advantages in T1-classified tumors, as the extent of the tumor could be seen, and offered histological information via biopsy. Diagnostic findings of MRI correlated in 85.7% with the pathologist's report, and laryngoscopy provided exact classification in only 64.3% of patients. Gd-DTPA-enhanced MRI is an important adjunct to non-contrast MR studies, and forms an ideal diagnostic supplement to laryngoscopy.
