Description / Table of Contents: Summary A rather quickly practicable, sensible method for the comparative-quantitative determination of the platelet agglomeration (together with the platelet adhesion to the collagen) is described, where standardized quantities of fresh citrated blood is added to standardized γ quantities of collagen fibrils. The number of platelets remaining after adequate mixture and centrifugation of the citrated blood represents a measurement of the intensity of the agglomerate formation and the adhesion of the platelet to the collagen fibrils.

Notes: Summary Adrenal steroids, e.g. Prednisolone, have marked effects on different types of macropotentials recorded from the central nervous system. We have studied the effect of Prednisolone on single nerve cell discharges of decerebrate, narcotized or encéphale isolé cats. 1. In decerebrate cats after Prednisolone the tonic stretch reflex of single α-motoneurones and the discharge frequency of spontaneously active γ-motoneurones were increased. 2. After Prednisolone gastroenemius muscle spindles with intact motor supply were activated by increased frequency of fusimotor neuron impulses. Muscle spindles could not be excited after deefferentation even with high doses of Prednisolone. 3. The effect of Prednisolone could be demonstrated even on single motoneurones of encéphale isolé cats, although the activation was less pronounced than in decerebrate animals. 4. It is concluded that Prednisolone increases the excitability of each single nerve cell but the effect is potentiated by multiple neuronal connections from nerve centers, in our experiments for example, from the reticular activating system.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In this paper the neuromuscular transmission was studied electromyographically: a) in newborns with myasthenia neonatorum i.e. transient myasthenia of neonates born from myasthenic mothers, b) in normal newborns. 1. The electromyograms of a neonate with transient myasthenia indicated a partial endplate block of the competitive type, well-known from myasthenia gravis of adults: a) Muscle action potentials were smaller than in normal controls at the same age. b) Rhythmic stimulation of motor nerves caused more marked fatigue of the neuromuscular transmission than in healthy newborns. 2. The neuromuscular transmission of the normal full-term neonate is not yet fully developed. Electrical high-frequency nerve stimulation was less perfectly transmitted to the muscle than in normal adults. 3. The functional weakness might be due to: a) fermentative immaturity of acetylcholine metabolism in the presynaptic nerve endings, b) altered ionic concentrations or permeabilities at the cell membrane resulting in corresponding alterations of the resting or the endplate potentials.

Notes: Summary The effects of hypocalcemia induced by excision of the parathyroid glands upon the function of spinal motoneurones and peripheral receptors were investigated in decerebrate cats. 1. In hypocalcemic convulsions the motoneurones show extraordinary high frequency discharges. 2. Both alpha and gamma motoneurones often exhibit double discharges, “doublets”. 3. The peripheral receptors, for example those in muscle spindles, have bursts of high frequency impulses “multiplets”; these are obtained with and without efferent muscle innervation. 4. The relation of this hypocalcemic excitation of the receptors to the changes in perception, spinal reflexes, and the neural control of respiration is discussed.

Notes: Abstract There is only sparse information about the development of children after successful treatment for intracranial germ-cell tumours. Between January 1981 and June 1992, 26 children with intracranial germ-cell tumours were treated in the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf. We report on treatment results, long standing residuals and the “quality of life” of these patients. The long-term event-free survival was 88% for the germinomas and 43% for the malignant teratomas. Of the patients 58% had no relevant functional neurological deficits and 37% had mild impairment. Only 1 patient with metastatic disease was severely handicapped. Six patients showed neuro-endocrine dysfunction. All of them had suprasellar/hypothalamic lesions and all received successful substitution therapy. As to neuropsychological functions, 53% of the patients had no or only mild disturbances. The most affected function was speed of information processing. Of the children 69% were able to proceed with their education at the same level as before therapy. The overall self-assessment revealed good results in 75% of the patients. Conclusion After surgical removal and radiation therapy long-term survival of intracranial germinomas amounts to 88%. Despite craniospinal axis radiation severe residuals are rare and a good quality of life is common. In malignant teratomas treatment regimens including chemotherapy are much less successful.

Notes: Abstract By means of polygraphic sleep recording, the sleep apnea profile with respect to the number and duration of inactive, obstructive and mixed apneic episodes as well as periodic breathing has been investigated in infants born preterm at 40, 52 and 64 weeks conceptional age and compared to that of term infants. At 40 weeks preterm infants showed significantly more apnea and periodic breathing compared to term infants. The difference was essentially due to obstructive and mixed apnea in non-REM sleep. There was a sharp decrease in all apneic variables—inactive, obstructive and mixed apnea as well as of periodic breathing—at 52 weeks conceptional age in infants that were previously preterm. Both groups exhibited a rather identical sleep apnea profile at 64 weeks. Two prospectively studied infants in the preterm group later became SIDS victims. One of them might have been identified as being at risk on the basis of his apnea profile compared to the normative data now available.

Notes: Summary In 13 infants (aged between 2 and 27 months) an EEG was recorded during normal night sleep. No sedation was used. Compared with an adequate control group a significant increase of sigma rhythms (sleep spindles) was found in all cases of phenylketonuria.

Notes: Abstract This is a report of a 11/2-year-old male with megaloblastic anaemia and a progressive neurological disorder clinically resembling leucodystrophy. The child was exclusively breast fed and his mother had been a strict vegetarian for more than 4 years before the child was born. After Vitamin B12 therapy the anaemia disappeared and the neurological condition dramatically improved.

Notes: Abstract The extra- vs intrauterine development of both visual and auditory cortical evoked response patterns was compared at 33, 37 and 40 weeks conceptional age. The maturation of visual cortical evoked responses is retarded in infants at 37 and 40 weeks conceptional age when born with a gestational age of less than 32 weeks, which thus implies a long extrauterine life span. The maturation of the auditory cortical evoked responses is not influenced by premature exposure to the extrauterine environment. The results are explained on the basis of the particular central nervous system growth spurt periods and a thus defined vulnerable period of different brain structures.
