    Notes: Summary We studied changes in autolytic activity of cells in the course of mating, using heterothallic haploid strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Autolytic activity was determined by measuring protein and sugar released in the medium. The autolytic activity increased very rapidly after mixing a and α type haploid cells, while such a conspicuous change was not observed with separate cultures of a or α type cells. Increase due to mating in release of sugar was more conspicuous than that of protein. Increase in autolytic activity preceded the appearance of conjugating cells.

    Notes: Abstract The process of mating reaction of Saccharomyces cerevisiae was studied by electron microscopy. Prior to the dissolution of the part of the cell walls separating the conjugating pair of cells, the thinning of the electron transparent layer of the cell wall occurs at the part toward which the nuclei are migrating. After the dissolution of the cell walls of the conjugating cells, the cell membranes become associated with each other, then to be broken and rejoined. The first diploid bud emerges from about the middle of the zygote. The morphological changes during the mating reaction are discussed in relation to the biochemical changes so far known.

    Notes: Abstract The haploid cells of the fission yeast, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, are arrested in the G1-phase by nitrogen starvation and are committed to sexual reproduction (mating and sporulation). We isolated the sterile mutants which were defective in G1 arrest following nitrogen starvation. Genetic analysis of these mutants defined a single locus designated as ste16. The nucleotide sequence revealed that ste16 + encodes an 82-kDa protein containing eight WD40-repeats in its carboxy terminal half. The ste16 disruptant was viable, but arrested the cell cycle in the G2-phase after the nutritional down-shift. When transferred to fresh growth medium, the G2-arrested ste16Δ haploids resumed the mitotic cycle from the S-phase, resulting in diploidization. This diploidization phenomenon was completely suppressed by the null mutation of rum1 encoding the inhibitor of Cdc2 kinase. As the Rum1 protein level was remarkably elevated in the ste16Δ, the Ste16 protein negatively controls the Rum1 level. The loss of function of ste16 disturbs the cell-cycle progression and impairs the mechanism for the maintenance of ploidy.

    Notes: Using an auxin-responsive mutant of Sacchairomyces ellipsodeus, expansion growth of cells caused by auxin was studied especially in comparison with that of protoplasts.〈list xml:id="l1" style="custom"〉1Indole-3-acetic acid induced detectable cell expansion growth in 3 hours in a buffered simple solution where no cell division occurred.2The auxin-induced expansion growth was inhibited by an antiauxin, trans-cinnamic acid.3Actinomycin D, chloramphenicol and cycloheximide inhibited the auxin-induced cell expansion growth.4Protoplasts did not expand in response to auxin under the condition where intact cells did.5The stability of protoplasts was not changed by the low auxin concentration (20 mg/1) which induced cell expansion.6High concentrations (100–1000 mg/1) of auxin caused protoplasts to burst even under an osmotically stable condition.

    Notes: Abstract Several Leonid fireballs were successfully photographed by the Japanese Fireball Network and by other observers in Japan on 16 November, 1996. A totals of seven of these were simultaneously observed from two or more stations, from which the orbital and physical data were deduced. The radiant of these fireballs were very small, only 0.1°, similar to that of the 1991 Perseids. The 1996 Leonids showed a lower magnitude distribution index similar to those obtained in the 1961 and 1965 Leonids. All of these showers occurred before perihelion passage of the parent comet. We conclude that we have already encountered the elongated front part of the dust trail of the Leonid parent comet, where the trail is probably composed of larger dust particles.
