Notes: Abstract Two new collective bands have been identified in120I nucleus from the cross-bombardment results of108Pd(16O,p3n) and114Cd(11B,5n) reactions. Of these, a strongly coupled band, based on πg7/2 ⊗ υh11/2 quasiparticles, exhibits energy staggering in odd even spin states. The other band, based on πh11/2 ⊗ υg7/2 configuration, is decoupled in nature and shows a band-crossing at ħω=0.39 MeV due to alignment of an h11/2 quasineutron pair.

Notes: Abstract The high spin states in121Te, populated via the114Cd(11B,p3n) reaction at 60 MeV, have been investigated using γ-ray spectroscopic techniques. The level structure above the vh11/2 isomeric state (t1/2=154d) has been substantially extended uptoJ π=51/2− at an excitation energy of 8293 keV.Non-collective oblate states based on (πg2 7/2⊗vh 11/2)21/2-,23/2- and (πg2 7/2⊗vh 3 11/2)39/2 have been identified.

Notes: Abstract Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence technique was employed to study the interactions among various elements, viz.: K, Zn, Br, Fe, Cu, Br & Rb in 4 groups of rats viz. control-GI, diabetic- GII (diabetes induced by i.p administration of alloxan monohydrate at a dose level of 150 mg/kg b.w; single injection), lithium treated-GIII ( lithium administered as Li2 Co3 at a dose level of 1.1 g of Li2 Co3/kg animal diet; free access; serum lithium levels – 0.5–1.2 mEq/L) and lithium + diabetic rats-GIV. The different treatments continued for a total duration of 1 month. The K contents were found to be significantly lowered in all the treatment groups which was maximum (28%) in lithium treated diabetic rats. Depression in the levels of Rb was noticed in lithium treated and lithium treated diabetic (G-III and G-IV) groups. However, the levels (Rb) remained unaltered in diabetic (G-II) group. Interestingly, a significant decline was observed in Fe levels in G-III following lithium administration but the levels remained unchanged in G-IV with lithium administration to diabetic rats. On the other hand, lithium treatment to normal (G-III) and diabetic (G-IV) rats indicated statistically significant elevation in the levels of Cu and Br. However, diabetic (G-II) rats did not indicate any elevation in the levels of these two elements. Interestingly, the concentrations of Zn were found to be significantly elevated in all the treatment groups, which was maximum (37%) in G-III (lithium) group. A comparison of various elements from lithium treated diabetic group G- IV with the corresponding elements from the diabetic group G-II, implied a significant depression in K and Rb levels and a significant elevation in the levels of Br.

Notes: Abstract High spin states in118I, populated through105Pd(16O,p2n) and106Pd(16O,p3n) reactions, have been investigated through γ-ray spectroscopy. A new rotational-like structure, showing energy staggering in odd-even spin states, has been identified. This band, probably based on πg7/2⊗ vh11/2 configuration, exhibits competing noncollective behaviour above I=20 state. Recent assignment of this band to118Cs has been ruled out.

Notes: Abstract Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence technique was employed to study the interactions of lead (50 and 100 mg/kg body wt) with K, Fe, Cu, Zn, Br and Rb in rat liver. Lead was administered orally to rats daily for dosage periods of 1 and 4 months (short and long terms). Hepatic Fe levels were found to increase significantly with the supplementation of low and high doses of lead for both the treatment periods, although the increase was more pronounced following long-term treatment. The levels of hepatic K, Cu and Br were seen to decrease significantly over both time intervals. Moreover, hepatic Rb contents were lowered with the short-term supplementation of low doses of lead. In contrast, Rb and Zn levels were increased when lead was administered for the longer period at both dose levels.

Notes: Abstract In vitro micropropagation of holy basil (Ocimum sanctum L.), an Indian medicinal herb, has been accomplished on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium utilizing young inflorescence explants. MS supplemented with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) or thidiazuron (TDZ) produced only non-morphogenetic callus. Direct multiple shoots differentiated within 2--3 weeks when explants were cultured on MS containing 6-benzyl aminopurine (BAP). Of the various levels of BAP tested, MS + BAP (1.0 mgl−1) produced the maximum number of shoots. Incorporation of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) (0.05 mgl−1) along with BAP (1.0 mgl−1) in the culture medium showed a marked increase in the number of shoots. About 92% of the in vitro regenerated shoots rooted on MS hormone-free medium within 2--3 weeks of culture and 85% of the micropropagated plantlets could be successfully established in soil, where they grew normally.

Notes: The values of Li sub-shell fluorescence yields (ωi) and Coster-Kronig transition probabilities (fij) were evaluated using radiative and non-radiative transition rates based on the relativistic Dirac-Hartree-Slater (RDHS) model for all the elements in the atomic number range 25 ≤ Z ≤ 96. The values of the Coster-Kronig-corrected fluorescence (vi) and average L shell fluorescence (ϖL) yields were also evaluated and least-squares fitted to obtain the polynomials representing them as a function of atomic number.

Notes: Kα and Kβ X-ray fluorescence cross-sections were measured for V, Mn, Co, Br, Rb, Mo, In, Sb, I and Cs at nine excitation energies ranging from 8 to 60 keV using energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The results were in good agreement with the theoretical values calculated using photoionization cross-sections based on the Hartree-Fock-Slater model.

Notes: Photon-induced L x-ray production cross-sections for the elements with 56 ≤ Z ≤ 92 were calculated at different energies in the range 11-60 keV using the photoionization cross-sections based on the relativistic Dirac-Hartree-Slater (RDHS) model, fluorescence yields and Coster-Kronig transition probabilities based on the RDHS model and two sets of emission rates based on the Dirac-Fock (DF) model and the Dirac-Hartree-Slater (DHS) model. These calculated results were compared with the experimentally measured cross-sections to check the applicability of emission rates based on the DF and DHS models.

Notes: The relative contribution to the production of target L x-rays by the scattered and K x-ray parts of excitation spectra from different secondary excitors in annular source geometry is estimated. In contrast to the observations of N. Singh et ul., who made similar measurements using triaxial geometry, we found only a small contribution to the production of L x-rays by the scattered part of the excitation spectrum in comparison with that by the K x-ray part. We crosschecked the observations by measuring L x-ray cross-sections for five elements, Pr, Nd, Sm, Tb and Yb, at 22.6 keV by two methods: (i) using a 109Cd radioisotope source in the direct excitation mode and (ii) using a secondary excitor of Ag with a 241Am radioisotope source as the primary excitor, in annular source geometry. The results obtained by the two methods are found to be in good agreement.
