Notes: Aims : To analyse the expression of αvβ6, an epithelial integrin involved in wound healing and tumorigenesis, in various human carcinoma types. Methods and results : A new monoclonal antibody to the human β6 subunit, 5C4, was used to locate αvβ6 in 157 cancers of gastroenteropancreatic and 21 of lung origin. The data were validated by analysis of αvβ6 extracted from histological sections. αvβ6 integrin showed strongest expression in 34 pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (mean score 2.88 ± 0.52), followed by 24 intestinal-type gastric carcinomas (1.45 ± 1.06) and eight lung adenocarcinomas (1.37 ± 1.1). Moderate expression was found in 31 diffuse-type gastric carcinomas (0.94 ± 0.83), seven duodenal adenocarcinomas (0.8 ± 1.34) and 26 colorectal adenocarcinomas (0.76 ± 0.71). Little αvβ6 was seen in seven liver cell carcinomas and six neuroendocrine tumours. Well-differentiated carcinomas expressed more β6 than poorly differentiated tumours. Peritumoral epithelial tissues where αvβ6-expressing tumours arose also expressed αvβ6. There was no correlation between expression of αvβ6 and its ligands tenascin and fibronectin in pancreatic and gastric carcinomas. Spheroid formation by pancreatic carcinoma cell lines led to αvβ6 up-regulation, but appeared independent of classical ligand binding to αvβ6.Conclusions : Our findings indicate that: (i) αvβ6 is overexpressed in pancreatic adenocarcinomas; (ii) αvβ6-positive carcinomas originate from αvβ6-expressing tissues; (iii) αvβ6 expression in tumours seems to be regulated independently from that of its ligands tenascin and fibronectin; and (iv) in-vitro overexpression of αvβ6 in pancreatic carcinoma cell lines accompanies spheroid formation.

Notes: Epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7−δ/NdAlO3/YBa2Cu3O7−δ-trilayers were grown by sputtering from stoichiometric targets. The YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) films were deposited by dc-magnetron sputtering. For the NdAlO3 films, rf-magnetron sputtering was used. The individual YBCO films revealed critical-current densities up to 3×106 A/cm2 at 77 K. The bilayer and trilayer structures were characterized by x-ray diffraction, Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The channel yield χmin of the YBCO film on top was 15% for an in situ deposited trilayer. The epitaxial growth of the subsequent layers was proved by cross-sectional TEM. Although the NdAlO3 layer contained misoriented grains, the top YBCO layer grows in single orientation over these areas. Preliminary electrical measurements show that NdAlO3 is a useful insulating dielectric for microelectronic applications.

Notes: Summary Thin films of YBaCuO have been deposited onto SrTiO3 (100) single crystals by different sputter techniques. At substrate temperatures around 700°C critical current densities as high as 5.9×106 A/cm2 at 77 K could be achieved. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has been used to characterize the surface composition and the surface homogeneity of the films. The existence of the superconducting perovskite structure beside other surface species can be detected for example by observing the Ba 4d5/2 emission at its characteristic binding energy of 87.3 eV. Using XPS as a quantitative analytical technique it has been shown that it is possible to detect metallic contamination (Pt, Cr) in the films at a detection limit of 0.1 atomic percent of the cations. The occurrence of the metallic contamination has been traced back to formation of volatile metal-oxides of the substrate heater wires during the deposition process.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A method has been described for the rapid determination of the fluorine content of fluorspar and fluorine-containing open-hearth slags. The method consists in reacting the fluorine-containing sample at temperatures above 1250° C with silica whereby volatile silicon compounds are formed. The volatile fluorine compounds of silicon are collected on a moist cotton-wool column and are hydrolysed. The hydrofluoric acid formed is titrated with standard sodium hydroxide solution. The temperature of the reaction may be decreased to 1050° C by adding WO3 or U3O8 simultaneously with silica.
